Citizen’s CZ Smart Gen-2 uses its YouQ wellness app to turn sleep data and alertness-test scores into personalized alertness forecasts and suggested actions. Citizen says the app’s AI models were developed using IBM Watson Studio and research from NASA Ames—but that does not mean NASA or IBM made or endorsed the watch, and the product claims are not independent proof of improved health or performance.
What NASA and IBM AI actually do in the CZ Smart
Citizen announced the CZ Smart Gen-2 at CES on January 4, 2023. Its announcement described YouQ as a wellness application developed using research pioneered by NASA’s Ames Research Center and AI built through Citizen partnerships using IBM Watson Studio on IBM Cloud. Those are Citizen’s descriptions of the product’s development, not evidence that NASA or IBM made, owns, or endorsed the watch. Citizen’s January 2023 announcement
Citizen’s support material says neural networks developed within the IBM Watson Studio workspace process sleep data and scores from YouQ’s Alert Monitor. The app uses those inputs to learn a wearer’s chronotype—their individual pattern of alertness across the day—and continue refining its understanding. How YouQ turns data into guidance
Alert Monitor scores
Citizen says the app’s custom Alert Monitor is modeled after NASA’s PVT+ psychomotor vigilance test, which was designed to assess cognitive acuity. The watch app uses Alert Monitor scores alongside sleep data as inputs to its chronotype model. This describes how Citizen says YouQ works; it should not be read as proof that the app reproduces a NASA test or has been independently validated for accuracy.

Forecasts and “Power Fixes”
Citizen describes YouQ as providing a 24-hour forecast with an hourly Power Score and suggested “Power Fixes.” These are intended to help the wearer understand changing alertness and choose actions accordingly. The company’s product and support materials do not establish that the forecasts are clinically accurate or that following the suggestions improves health, alertness, or performance.
Learning period
Citizen says YouQ can learn a wearer’s chronotype within seven to ten days and then keep refining it. That is a product description from Citizen, not an independently reported result or a guarantee that every wearer will get a reliable forecast on that schedule.

Which CZ Smart models use YouQ?
Citizen’s technology page describes YouQ in connection with both touchscreen and hybrid CZ Smart Gen-2 models. The hardware is not identical: Qualcomm identifies the touchscreen Gen-2 as using the Snapdragon Wear 4100+, while Citizen’s US product page describes the hybrid JX2009-03E as a 44 mm watch with Google Wear OS and compatibility with iPhone and Android. Features and compatibility should be checked for the specific model and region rather than assumed to be the same across the line.

Is the Citizen CZ Smart still available?
Availability depends on the exact model and market. As checked on Citizen’s US page, hybrid model JX2009-03E is marked “Sold Out”; the same listing names a CZ Smart Gen 2 charging cable, part 399-003DL-01. That status applies to that US product page and model only, and may change. It does not establish whether other CZ Smart versions are available elsewhere.
