It can help with calculations such as speed, distance, fuel consumption and unit conversions, but the scale takes practice and is not a substitute for dedicated flight equipment.
What is the Hamilton Khaki Aviation Converter Auto Chrono?
It is a 44mm stainless-steel aviation-style watch with an H-21-Si automatic chronograph movement, day-date display and rotating slide-rule bezel. The blue-dial leather-strap model is reference H76746540. Hamilton’s US product page currently labels that reference “Past collection” and “Not available online”; stock elsewhere may differ.

Hamilton’s product description says the watch is “equipped with a bi-directional, rotating slide-rule bezel to calculate critical conversions and metrics at a glance.” That describes the bezel’s purpose, not a guarantee of instant or error-free calculations.
What does the Hamilton Converter’s slide-rule bezel do?
The bezel and dial scales work on the principle of the E6B flight computer, an instrument developed in the late 1930s. Their scales can be used for calculations involving speed, distance and fuel consumption, as well as conversions including kilometers to nautical miles, pounds to kilograms, and feet to meters. See Monochrome Watches’ 2023 review for its description of the scale.

Using the scales requires aligning and reading them correctly. The review cautions that the instrument is complicated to use without learning the manual, so prospective owners should treat it as a mechanical calculation aid to learn—not as a watch that makes aviation calculations self-explanatory. It should not be treated as necessary or sufficient flight equipment.
How is the dial and chronograph laid out?
The blue edition has a sunray-brushed dial, luminous applied markers and hands, slide-rule and tachymeter scales, a red-tipped central chronograph hand, and a framed day-date window. Three recessed subdials show running seconds and the chronograph’s 30-minute and 12-hour counters. The 2023 reviewer described the display as busy but balanced; that is a subjective assessment, not a measured readability result.
The chronograph records elapsed time, while the tachymeter scale is another timing-related scale. Both sit alongside the slide rule, which contributes to the dial’s information-dense appearance.

| Movement | Hamilton H-21-Si automatic chronograph; the 2023 review describes it as a cam-and-lever caliber based on ETA/Valjoux 7750, with 25 jewels, 4Hz frequency and silicon balance spring. |
| Power reserve | 60 hours, according to Hamilton and the 2023 review. |
| Crystal | Sapphire; the 2023 review specifies double anti-reflective sapphire. |
| Bezel insert | K1 mineral glass, according to the 2023 review. |
| Functions and display | Chronograph, day-date, tachymeter and bidirectional slide-rule bezel. |

| Crown | Screw-down, according to Hamilton and the 2023 review. |

The thickness figures differ by source: Hamilton’s current listing gives 14.95mm, while the review published on 10 October 2023 gives 14.60mm. Both make this a substantial watch on the wrist; the published figures should not be silently treated as identical.
Which dial and strap versions were listed?
Monochrome Watches’ 2023 review lists four configurations. Its prices below are historical review prices, not current offers.
| Reference | Dial | Configuration | Price reported in 2023 |
|---|---|---|---|
| H76746540 | Blue | Leather strap | EUR 2,245 |
| H79746140 | Blue | Steel bracelet | EUR 2,295 |
| H76726530 | Black | Leather strap | EUR 2,245 |
| H76726130 | Black | Steel bracelet | EUR 2,295 |
The review describes the leather option as cognac calf leather with an H-shaped pin buckle and the bracelet as steel with a folding clasp. Hamilton lists a 22mm lug and buckle width for H76746540. That is useful when considering strap sizing, but it does not establish that every third-party strap will fit or clear the case.

Who is this watch for?
- Consider it if you want an automatic chronograph with a distinctive mechanical slide rule and appreciate an information-rich aviation-style dial.
- Think carefully if you prefer a compact, uncluttered watch: the 44mm case and roughly 15mm published thickness make for a sizable presence, and the multiple scales may take getting used to.
- Before buying confirm the exact reference, configuration, condition, regional availability and current price with the seller. For the slide rule, consult the correct manual and practice its calculations before relying on it as a tool.
