What is the Apple Watch band lawsuit about?
Cavalier v. Apple, Inc., No. 5:25-cv-00713, was filed on January 21, 2025, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California. It is a proposed class action, not a final judgment against Apple.
The initial complaint named the Apple Watch Sport Band, Ocean Band, and Nike Sport Band. Plaintiffs alleged that the bands contained excessive PFAS and that Apple marketed them with representations about health, everyday use, and environmental sustainability. Those are allegations, not findings established by the court.
The March 16, 2026 order describes a later amended complaint focused on Apple’s fluoroelastomer Sport Band. It summarizes plaintiffs’ allegations that the band contained PFHxA, a type of PFAS, and that prolonged wrist contact could pose a health risk. The order does not establish that every Apple Watch band, material, or product year contains PFHxA.

What chemical and test results are at issue?
The court order discusses PFHxA, a type of PFAS. It refers to two different sets of reported testing results; neither should be read as a final finding about the chemical composition or safety of Apple’s bands.

The order states that 1 ng/g equals 1 ppb. It also describes an EU restriction for clothing and accessories at 25 ppb or greater as scheduled to begin on October 10, 2026. That date was still upcoming when the latest cited information was recorded on October 7, 2026; implementation and the underlying regulation have not been independently verified here.

What did the judge decide?
On March 16, 2026, Judge P. Casey Pitts denied Apple’s motion to dismiss claims for fraudulent concealment or omission, negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment, and violation of California’s Unfair Competition Law. The judge dismissed the fraudulent misrepresentation and implied warranty of merchantability claims with leave to amend.
For purposes of deciding the motion, the court assumed the amended complaint’s allegations were true. A motion-to-dismiss ruling asks whether claims have been pleaded sufficiently to continue; it does not decide whether the allegations are true or whether the defendant is liable. The order also concluded that plaintiffs had adequately pleaded Article III standing, could pursue equitable relief, and had potentially timely claims, and that they did not need to specify the state law governing their common-law claims at that stage.

What is known about the case’s later status?
A court-approved extension dated April 24, 2026, records that plaintiffs filed a Second Amended Complaint on April 13 and extended Apple’s response deadline to May 11, 2026. The public docket snapshot reviewed for this account was last retrieved April 24, 2026, and cautions that a more recent listing may be available through PACER. The case’s status after that snapshot, including whether Apple responded by the deadline, is not verified here.
What has Apple said?
A News24 report published January 28, 2025, quoted an Apple spokesperson saying, “Apple Watch bands are safe for users to wear.” The report also said Apple conducts its own testing and works with independent laboratories. This is Apple’s reported position, not an independent determination of the bands’ safety.

Does this mean Apple Watch bands are toxic?
No such conclusion follows from the ruling described here. The lawsuit alleges PFAS in certain named bands and raises a potential risk; the court has not determined that the bands are toxic or that users have been harmed. The order’s treatment of the plaintiffs’ test result allowed claims to proceed at an early procedural stage, not a final safety verdict.
The available information also does not establish that silicone bands or any particular third-party replacement are PFAS-free or safer. A buyer comparing bands would need product-specific material disclosures and testing rather than relying on the material name alone.
