It began rolling out alongside the Android 15 December update, but not every Pixel received every feature at the same time—or at all. Eligibility depended on the device, carrier, country, language, account, app version and, in some cases, a subscription.
The biggest changes included Gemini upgrades, smarter Call Screen replies on Pixel 9 phones, Pixel Tablet ecosystem features, new Pixel Watch safety and Fitbit health tools, and several camera, accessibility and recording improvements.

Pixel Drop versus the December Android update
A Pixel Drop is Google’s name for a package of new Pixel features, improvements and bug fixes. The December 2024 release was distributed with the Android 15 system update, which also included security patches and platform fixes. Some features could arrive through separate updates to apps and services such as Gemini, Gboard, Pixel Screenshots, Personal Safety, Pixel Watch and Fitbit.

Gemini gets more useful—but not universally available
Saved information
At launch, Gemini Advanced could remember information that users chose to provide, such as dietary preferences, and use it in later answers. Google said users could view, edit or delete saved information and see when it was used.
This was not a free feature for every Pixel owner. Google’s December announcement required Gemini Advanced and the Google One AI Premium plan at launch, as well as a compatible account, browser setup and age eligibility. Availability also varied by country.
Actions across apps and services
Google expanded Gemini’s ability to perform or initiate actions, including calling personal contacts or businesses, drafting and sending messages through default phone and messaging apps, setting alarms, changing device settings, opening the camera for a selfie, controlling compatible smart-home devices, playing Spotify content and finding place information in Google Maps.

Gemini Live likewise expanded to more languages, but Google tied availability to country, language, device, account, age and feature compatibility.
Pixel 9 gets smarter Call Screen replies
On the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Gemini Nano could suggest contextual, tappable replies during Call Screen. For example, a user could answer a delivery caller with a yes-or-no response or ask a relevant follow-up without fully taking the call.
Call Screen also gained live transcripts during automatically screened calls, allowing users to answer or decline while screening was in progress. Gemini Nano suggested replies were listed for Pixel 9-series phones in English in the United States. Automatic Call Screen viewing was listed for Pixel 4 and newer in English in the U.S.; Call Screen itself varies by country and language.
Camera, photos and creative tools
Ultra HDR sharing to Instagram
Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold could share Ultra HDR photos directly to Instagram Feed. Ultra HDR can preserve higher brightness, contrast and detail than a conventional photo, but the Instagram app and regional compatibility are required.
Snapchat Photo Picker
On Pixel 6 and newer phones, Snapchat’s Photo Picker could display folders, favorites and cloud photos, making it easier to find an image without scrolling through a conventional device gallery.

Foldable camera improvements
Dual Screen in Portrait Mode arrived on Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It lets the photographer and subject preview the portrait on the outer display. Made You Look expanded to the first-generation Pixel Fold.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold also received an additional Disney/Pixar-themed Made You Look animation. Google described that content as time-limited through December 3, 2025, so it should not be treated as a permanently available feature.
Pixel Studio stickers in Gboard
Pixel Studio creations became available from Gboard for use in messaging and social apps. Google limited this feature to the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold, in English.

Pixel Screenshots could use screenshot-derived information to suggest movies, music, products and other text in Gboard searches inside relevant apps. On supported devices, the setting is found at Pixel Screenshots → Show suggestions from your screenshots in other apps.
Google listed this capability for Pixel 6 and newer phones and Pixel Tablet, while related functions were narrower and often limited to Pixel 9-series devices and English. This is not simply a search of every gallery image: it depends on the Pixel Screenshots app, indexing, permissions, supported hardware and the setting being enabled.
Expressive Captions and Recorder Clear voice
Expressive Captions
Expressive Captions used AI to convey aspects of speech such as cheering, applause, gasps and emphasis in addition to the words being spoken. Google said it worked with content containing sound, including videos, livestreams, social media and video messages.
At launch, it was listed for Pixel 6 and newer phones and compatible Android devices running Android 14 or later, in English in the United States. It did not work with phone calls or Netflix, and caption accuracy and wording could vary.
Recorder Clear voice
Recorder’s Clear voice feature was designed to reduce background noise and make speech easier to follow in recordings such as lectures and interviews. Google listed it for the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. It is an audio enhancement, not a guarantee of studio-quality recording or perfect separation between speakers.

Simple View and Now Playing artwork
Simple View increased font size and touch sensitivity to make controls, apps and widgets easier to see and use. It complements Android’s broader accessibility tools rather than replacing them, and availability should be checked for the specific Pixel model.
Now Playing history gained album artwork, helping users identify and explore songs previously recognized by the phone.
Pixel Tablet features deserve their own update
Lock-screen widgets
New Pixel Tablet lock-screen widgets provided quick access to selected controls and information, including music, timers, alarms, calendar details and white noise. Google’s described access method was to swipe left from the lock screen.

Tap to Cast
When the Pixel Tablet was docked, bringing a phone near the dock could move music playback to the tablet. The same gesture could move playback back to the phone when leaving.
Tap to Cast moves playback between devices; it does not transfer a downloaded music file. The tablet must be docked, both devices need suitable connectivity and configuration, and the media service must support the handoff. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and required permissions may also matter.
Notification synchronization
Dismissing a notification on one device could remove it from the other, reducing duplicate alerts across a phone and tablet.
Gemini, Circle to Search and VPN
Google highlighted Gemini for brainstorming, planning, lists and shopping, along with Gemini Live. Circle to Search could identify or find information about an object without switching apps.

The Pixel Tablet also gained the built-in Google VPN previously available on Pixel phones. Google cautioned that restrictions applied, the VPN was not available in every country, and some data might not be transmitted through it. It can affect data usage and should not be treated as a guarantee of complete anonymity or protection for every application.

Pixel Watch and Fitbit updates
Nest camera and doorbell live view
Pixel Watch 2 users could view a live feed from supported Nest cameras or doorbells and speak to someone at the door from the watch. This was not universal support for every Nest product; compatible hardware, internet connectivity and, for some functions, Wi-Fi were required. Check Google’s compatibility details before buying a camera or doorbell for this purpose.
Loss of Pulse Detection
In the December 2024 expansion, Pixel Watch 3 users in Germany and Portugal gained Loss of Pulse Detection. The watch may check for a pulse while worn, vibrate and show a check-in if one is not detected, and dismiss the alert if movement or a pulse is detected. If the wearer does not respond, it can begin an audible emergency countdown and attempt to call emergency services.
According to Google’s support documentation, the feature requires appropriate network connectivity and may not detect every event. It is not a diagnosis, does not replace medical monitoring, and is not intended for people under 22 or people identified as high-risk for sudden cardiac death. At launch, Google also said it had not been cleared or evaluated by the U.S. FDA and was CE marked for certain European markets.
Use “may detect” and “can attempt to call,” not “reliably detects cardiac arrest” or “guarantees emergency help.” If an emergency call is made accidentally, Google says not to hang up: tell the operator that the call was accidental and no assistance is needed.
Fall Detection and Car Crash Detection in Germany
In Germany, Fall Detection expanded to all Pixel Watch generations. Car Crash Detection expanded to Pixel phones and Pixel Watch 2 and 3. These features depend on country, hardware, connectivity and other conditions. Fall Detection cannot detect every fall, and a non-LTE watch generally needs its paired phone nearby for emergency calling.
Cardio Load, Target Load and Daily Readiness
Beginning December 9, 2024, Google expanded its enhanced Daily Readiness algorithm plus Cardio Load and Target Load beyond Pixel Watch 3 to supported Pixel Watches and Fitbit devices. On Pixel Watches, the metrics could be viewed in the Fitbit Today app or through a watch-face complication.
“Supported Pixel Watches and Fitbit devices” is the accurate description—not all Pixel Watches. Model, account, region and Fitbit eligibility can affect access.

Google’s continuing policy says Pixel 8 and later receive seven years of OS and security updates, while Pixel 6 through Pixel 7a and Pixel Fold receive five years from their U.S. Google Store availability dates. That support window does not make every later Pixel Drop feature available on every supported phone.

How to install and verify the update
Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi.
- Charge it sufficiently; Google recommends at least 75% before updating.
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Software update.
- Install the update if it is offered and follow the on-screen instructions.
To check what is installed, open Settings → About phone or About tablet → Android version. Review the Android version, Android security update, Google Play system update and build number. Google’s December 2024 global build was listed as AP4A.241205.013, with carrier and region variants including AP4A.241205.013.C1, AP4A.241205.013.B1 and AP4A.241205.013.A2. These are examples, not a universal build for every Pixel.
Pixel Watch
Keep the watch charged, connected to its paired phone and online, then use the Pixel Watch app to check for pending watch software and app updates. Update Fitbit, Personal Safety and relevant Google apps as well. Exact labels can vary with the app version and watch model.
Why a feature may be missing
- Phased rollout: Carrier and regional delivery could take several weeks.
- Hardware restriction: Gemini Nano replies, Clear voice and some camera tools were limited to Pixel 9-series hardware.
- Language or country: Several Gemini, Call Screen and caption features launched in English or selected markets only.
- App dependency: Update Google, Gemini, Gboard, Pixel Screenshots, Pixel Tips, Personal Safety, Pixel Watch and Fitbit from the Play Store.
- Account or subscription: Gemini saved information required Google One AI Premium at launch.
- Accessory or service requirement: Tap to Cast needs a docked tablet; Nest live view needs supported hardware; health and emergency tools need suitable connectivity.
- Feature status: Some features were described as beta, limited or coming soon.
Restart the device, install pending app updates and check Settings → System → Software update again. A missing feature does not necessarily mean the OTA installation failed.
Privacy and safety checks
Before enabling these features, review the controls that matter to you:
- Gemini saved information and connected extensions.
- Pixel Screenshots indexing and the setting allowing suggestions in other apps.
- Personal Safety permissions and emergency-contact settings.
- Fitbit health-data and account settings.
- Connected Nest and smart-home accounts.
- Google VPN status and which traffic is excluded.
Gemini actions, screenshot indexing, smart-home controls, health metrics and emergency detection involve account permissions and data processing. Do not assume they are entirely on-device or entirely private unless the feature’s specific documentation says so.
Should you update?
Yes, owners of supported Pixel devices should install the December update when offered, particularly if they want the latest security fixes or use Gemini, Call Screen, Pixel Screenshots, Fitbit or Google’s connected-device features. The most meaningful hardware-specific additions were concentrated on the Pixel 9 family, while the Pixel Tablet and Pixel Watch changes were largely ecosystem, safety and health refinements.
Buying newer hardware solely for one advertised feature is less straightforward. Region, language, subscription, app, accessory and connectivity restrictions can determine whether that feature is usable.
