What the Subdials and Tachymeter Scale on a Chronograph Watch Do

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The large seconds hand on a chronograph is usually a stopwatch hand, not the hand that continuously shows the current seconds. Pressing the start pusher begins elapsed-time measurement, pressing it again stops the measurement, and the reset pusher returns the stopwatch indications to zero. The small subdials may count chronograph minutes or hours, show ordinary running seconds, display fractions of a second, or even show time of day, depending on the movement.

The outer tachymeter scale converts a measured interval into a rate per hour. If a known one-kilometre distance takes 45 seconds, for example, the scale gives 80 kilometres per hour. Neither the subdial layout nor the tachymeter convention is universal, so the caliber manual for the exact watch is the final authority.

What a chronograph function measures

Seiko Watch Corporation defines a chronograph as a watch function that “measures the elapsed time while indicating the current time.” That distinction explains nearly every extra hand and subdial. The normal clock continues to display hours, minutes and, on some designs, running seconds while the stopwatch mechanism measures a separate interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A typical chronograph has a start/stop control and a reset control. The first press starts timing, the second press stops it, and reset returns the elapsed-time hands to their zero positions. Some watches add a separate lap or split-time control. Button locations and sequences vary by caliber, so identify the controls in the watch’s instructions rather than assuming that every two- or three-pusher watch works identically.

Before timing, check that the center stopwatch hand is precisely at zero. If it is not, use the procedure in the manual to reset or correct the hand before relying on a reading. A hand that is visually close to zero can introduce a significant error when you use a tachymeter.

What each subdial and hand may indicate

There is no universal three-subdial map. Two watches with similar cases can assign their small hands to completely different functions. The following roles are documented on specific movements and models; use them as identification clues, not as a substitute for the caliber manual.

Center chronograph-seconds hand

On the Seiko 8R46 and 8R48 examples, the long central hand is the stopwatch seconds hand. It normally remains stationary while the watch is being used as an ordinary timekeeper. When the chronograph starts, it sweeps around the main dial and shows the first 60 seconds of elapsed time. The short, continuously moving seconds hand, if the watch has one, is a different indication.

Minute subdial

A small dial can count the minutes accumulated by the stopwatch. The 8R46/8R48 instructions identify a stopwatch minute hand. Its markings may be arranged in 30-minute or 60-minute cycles, and the hand may advance continuously or in steps, depending on the movement. Read the scale printed on that particular subdial; the number of marks is not enough to identify its range.

Hour subdial

An hour counter extends the useful measuring period beyond the first hour. In Seiko’s cited instructions, caliber 8R48 has a stopwatch hour hand and can measure up to 12 hours. The same instructions specify a maximum of 30 minutes for caliber 8R46. Those capacities belong to those calibers and should not be applied to every chronograph with an apparent hour subdial.

Running seconds

Many chronographs devote one small dial to the ordinary timekeeping seconds. It may move whenever the watch is running, even when the chronograph is stopped. A constantly moving small hand is therefore not automatically a stopwatch counter. Compare its behavior with the center hand when you press start and with the labels in the manual.

Fractional-second and time-of-day counters

Some layouts divide the stopwatch job among several specialized counters. Seiko’s 2023 Speedtimer release describes models with a 1/100-second chronograph counter at 2 o’clock, a seconds counter at 12 o’clock and a 1/10-second counter at 10 o’clock. The same design has a separate hours-and-minutes subdial at 6 o’clock for time of day. This is a specific Speedtimer arrangement, not a standard definition of those positions on all watches.

How to use the chronograph without misreading it

  1. Identify the caliber and controls. Find the caliber code on the case back or paperwork. Use the manufacturer’s instruction lookup for that code and note which pusher starts, stops, resets or records a split time.
  2. Return the stopwatch to zero. Stop any running measurement and press reset as instructed. Confirm that the center hand and every elapsed-time counter point to their zero marks.
  3. Start at the exact event. Press the start control once. Watch which indications move; this confirms which hand is measuring the interval on your model.
  4. Stop at the exact finish. Press the same control again, or the designated stop control if your movement separates those functions. Read the central seconds hand and the relevant minute or hour counter together.
  5. Record the result before resetting. Resetting erases the displayed interval. Write down the reading or photograph the dial if you need to preserve it.
  6. Reset only after reading. Press the reset control with the chronograph stopped unless the manual explicitly describes a flyback or other special operation.

The stopwatch’s stated range and smallest displayed increment are movement specifications. A watch that shows tenths of a second is not necessarily measuring to that accuracy in every circumstance, and a 30-minute movement cannot be used for a two-hour interval without losing the first portion of the measurement.

What the tachymeter scale does

A tachymeter is a rate-conversion scale used with a chronograph. It does not sense speed, distance or production output by itself. You supply a known distance or a countable task, use the stopwatch to measure how long one unit takes, and read the corresponding rate per hour from the scale.

On a conventional scale, the calculation is 3,600 divided by the measured seconds. The printed number around the dial lets you perform that conversion without arithmetic when the interval and units match the scale’s design. For a distance, the unit might be kilometres or miles. For a task, the unit might be one finished item, one cycle or one transaction.

Distance example

To estimate speed over one kilometre, start the chronograph as the object enters the measured kilometre and stop it as it leaves. If the elapsed time is 45 seconds, the tachymeter reading is 80: 3,600 ÷ 45 = 80 kilometres per hour. The result is valid because the timed distance was exactly one kilometre and the scale is being read as a kilometres-per-hour conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Production-rate example

To estimate an hourly production rate, time one completed item or cycle. A 20-second interval corresponds to 180 items per hour because 3,600 ÷ 20 = 180. The calculation assumes that the item or cycle is the unit you intend to repeat and that the rate remains comparable over an hour; it is not a measurement of quality, capacity or long-term output.

Step-by-step tachymeter use

  1. Define one unit. Choose one kilometre, one mile or one identical completed task. Do not mix kilometres with a scale or result expressed in miles.
  2. Check the scale’s convention. Read the manual to see whether the printed scale is intended for intervals within one minute or for a longer range.
  3. Zero the chronograph. Align the stopwatch hand with zero before starting.
  4. Start and stop at the boundaries. Press the controls at the beginning and end of the chosen distance or task, not when the watch is convenient to read.
  5. Read the rate at the seconds hand. Use the tachymeter number opposite the stopped stopwatch seconds hand. If the result falls outside the printed range, use the mathematical conversion or the method specified for that watch instead of guessing.

The result is an estimate of a rate under the chosen conditions, not a direct speed-sensor measurement. Any error in the distance, task definition, start or stop timing, or hand alignment carries directly into the calculated rate.

Why some tachymeter scales cannot be read the usual way

Many familiar tachymeters are designed for events completed within one minute. Seiko’s instructions for calibers 8T61, 8T63 and 8T67 note that some models have scale notation intended for measurements longer than one minute. A scale with an extended convention may require a different starting point or interpretation than the common 60-second method.

Do not infer the interval range from the presence of the word “tachymeter” alone. Inspect the markings, identify the movement and follow its instructions. If a measured event takes longer than the ordinary one-minute range and the manual does not describe an extension, report the elapsed time and calculate the rate rather than reading an unrelated number from the bezel.

How to identify an unfamiliar chronograph

Start with the case-back caliber

The caliber code is more reliable than dial position. Record every letter and number, including suffixes, then use the manufacturer’s manual for that exact code. Seiko’s instruction process specifically directs owners to identify the caliber and consult its instruction page.

Observe the hands with the stopwatch stopped

Note which small hand moves continuously during ordinary timekeeping. That is a strong clue that it shows running seconds, but verify it against the manual. Then press start briefly and observe the center hand and subdials. A counter that begins moving only after the start command is part of the chronograph system.

Read the printed labels

Words or numbers such as “min,” “hr,” “1/10,” “1/100” or a distinct tachymeter ring provide clues. Unlabeled markings are not proof of a particular function; some manufacturers use a small dial for time of day, a date-related indication or another movement-specific display.

Check the range before timing a long event

Confirm the maximum elapsed period and the smallest increment. The documented difference between 8R46’s 30-minute range and 8R48’s 12-hour range illustrates why a similar-looking dial does not establish capacity.

Common reading errors and their fixes

  • Calling the running-seconds dial a stopwatch counter: Start and stop the chronograph and see which indication responds. Confirm the assignment in the manual.
  • Reading only the central hand: After the first minute, combine it with the minute counter; after an hour, include the hour counter when the movement has one.
  • Using a tachymeter without a known unit: Establish the exact distance or single task first. A number read from the bezel has no meaningful unit by itself.
  • Mixing miles and kilometres: The arithmetic is the same only when the distance unit and reported rate use the same unit.
  • Applying a one-minute scale to a longer event: Check whether the model has the extended notation documented for some 8T-series watches. Otherwise calculate the rate from elapsed seconds.
  • Starting with a misaligned hand: Reset to zero and, if the hand repeatedly stops away from zero, have the movement checked rather than mentally correcting every reading.
  • Assuming every pusher has the same job: Follow the button sequence for the exact caliber, especially on flyback, split-time or multi-counter designs.

What to compare when choosing or identifying a chronograph

Look beyond the number of subdials and the presence of a decorative bezel. Compare the actual functions and limits:

  • Elapsed-time range: Determine whether the movement measures 30 minutes, 12 hours or another period.
  • Resolution: Check whether the smallest indication is a whole second, a tenth, a hundredth or another increment.
  • Subdial clarity: Make sure running seconds can be distinguished from stopwatch minutes and that the hands do not hide one another at common readings.
  • Tachymeter convention: Verify whether the scale is for a standard one-minute interval, a longer interval or a specific unit system.
  • Control layout: Confirm which pusher starts, stops, resets or records a split time.
  • Manual availability: A caliber manual is essential when the dial uses an unusual fractional counter or an extended tachymeter scale.

The most dependable way to understand an existing watch is therefore practical: identify its caliber, reset the stopwatch, observe which indications move when timing starts, and then apply only the capacity and scale rules documented for that movement.
