The right watch is the one that suits your use, budget, wrist and preferred ownership routine—not necessarily the one with the most features or the highest prestige. Before buying, decide what you need it to do, how it should fit, what care it may require, and whether the seller can support it after the sale.
What should I look for when buying a watch?
Start with the job the watch needs to do. A watch for daily wear may have different priorities from one reserved for formal occasions, sport or water activities. If you are buying a gift, consider the recipient’s habits and preferences rather than assuming a particular style or feature will suit them.
Clarify how you will use it
- When and how often will you wear it?
- Which functions would you genuinely use?
- Will it encounter water, knocks, or conditions that affect your choice of materials and design?
- Do you want one versatile watch or a watch for a particular occasion?
Jewelers of America recommends matching water-resistance needs to wearing habits and considering seller support and warranty questions in the buying decision. Its watch-buying guide is a general resource; specific requirements still depend on the watch and its documentation.
Set the full ownership budget
Decide what you are comfortable spending on the purchase and on care over time. A watch’s movement is a substantial part of what you pay for, but the available guidance does not establish a universal winner for accuracy, service cost or value among quartz, automatic and hand-wound watches. Avoid treating a price or a prestigious name as proof that a watch suits your needs.

Should I buy quartz or an automatic watch?
Choose by how you want the watch to operate and what ownership routine you prefer. Jewelers of America describes quartz watches as typically battery powered. The movement category alone does not determine which watch is right for you.
- Quartz: Consider whether a battery-powered watch fits your preferences and expectations for care.
- Automatic or hand-wound: Consider whether you want a watch with a different operating and care routine, and ask the seller or maker what that routine entails for the specific model.
Before deciding, ask how the exact watch is powered, what care the manufacturer recommends, and where service can be obtained. Do not assume one movement type is inherently more accurate, less expensive to maintain or better value without model-specific evidence.
How do I know what watch size will fit my wrist?
Try the whole watch on your wrist if possible. Case diameter is only one part of fit: bezel width, lug length, case profile and bracelet construction can change how a watch looks and wears. The Organization of Swiss Watchmakers explains these differences in its watch terminology guide.

- Check whether the watch feels comfortable and sits where you want it to.
- Look at its proportions on your wrist rather than relying on diameter alone.
- If you wear shirts with cuffs, check whether the watch sits comfortably beneath one.
- Consider how the bracelet or strap affects comfort and fit.
If you cannot try the watch on before buying, ask the seller for the dimensions that matter to you, including case thickness and lug-to-lug length, and confirm the return terms. Rolex says its Official Rolex Jewelers can adjust a bracelet or strap for fit; that is a Rolex-specific service, not a promise that every retailer offers adjustments.

A water-resistance marking is not a universal guarantee that a watch is safe for every water activity or at the depth suggested by a printed meter figure. Match the watch to your actual plans, then check the exact model’s user guide and condition before exposing it to water.
Jewelers of America distinguishes splash exposure from watches intended for more demanding uses. Patek Philippe advises owners to consult the relevant user guide to verify water resistance. The Organization of Swiss Watchmakers notes that water resistance can deteriorate with age, service needs or physical damage. These sources support checking the specific watch, not translating a rating directly into a guaranteed swimming or diving depth.

- If its condition or water resistance is uncertain, do not expose it to water until it has been checked by an appropriate service provider.
Which materials and features are worth paying for?
Choose materials for the way the watch feels and looks in your life, not for a universal ranking. Jewelers of America identifies stainless steel and titanium as durable, commonly favored watchmaking materials, but that general guidance does not establish scratch performance, repair cost or allergy suitability for every model. Consider weight, comfort, appearance, care and the environment in which you will wear the watch.
For every extra function, ask: “Will I actually use this?” A complication or specification is useful when it meets a real need; it is not automatically an upgrade for every buyer. Check model-specific information rather than inferring performance from a feature name alone.

Online, you may not be able to assess fit or inspect the watch in person before paying, so verify the practical details in writing. For any purchase, ask who handles repairs, whether brand service is available in your region, what the written warranty covers, and which documents should accompany the watch.

Jewelers of America recommends understanding the seller’s after-sales facilities and brand service support, and checking for original packaging, documents and an itemized receipt. Brand-specific guarantee terms can be stricter: Rolex, for example, says its guarantee conditions include purchase from an Official Rolex Jeweler and a fully completed guarantee card. That example applies to Rolex and should not be assumed to describe another maker’s warranty or the rules in every market.
How do I compare two watches?
Compare each watch against the same questions instead of looking for one specification that decides the choice. No single factor proves overall quality.
