What to Check Before Buying a Garmin Endurance Watch

A practical checklist for choosing a Garmin endurance watch around your sport, event length, GPS runtime, navigation needs and compatible sensors.

Choose a Garmin endurance watch around your sport and longest event—not a universal “best” model. Before buying, check GPS-mode battery life for your actual outing, the maps and navigation you need, multisport support, the training metrics you will use, display and fit, and compatibility with sensors you already own. Garmin’s running-watch guide groups models into Essential, Advanced and Premium tiers; use that as a starting point, then verify the exact model and size.

Start with your sport and event length

A watch that suits road training may not be the right fit for an ultra or a triathlon. Make a shortlist based on what you will do with it: running performance, multisport transitions, long GPS outings, navigation, or a mix. Garmin names the Forerunner 970, Enduro 3 and fēnix 8 as multisport options, but support and features differ by model. Garmin’s triathlon guidance and running-watch guide are useful starting points, not substitutes for checking the specific watch.

For road running and performance metrics

Look at the exact training features you want, such as training readiness or status, running metrics, and onboard maps. Garmin presents the Forerunner 970 as an elite-running option. Some metrics require extra hardware: for example, Garmin says step speed loss on the Forerunner 970 requires pairing it with an HRM 600 heart-rate monitor. If a metric is a deciding factor, check both the watch and its accessory requirements.

For triathlon and mixed sports

Confirm that the watch supports the multisport activity you need, how it handles transitions, and whether it offers custom multisport profiles. Garmin says compatible watches can automatically detect transitions; that does not mean every model has the same behavior or options. If your setup includes cycling sensors, an Edge cycling computer or a Tacx smart trainer, verify compatibility with the exact watch rather than assuming the Garmin ecosystem makes every combination work.

For trails, hiking and ultras

Prioritize GPS runtime for the duration of your outing, plus the navigation tools you will actually use. Garmin positions the Enduro 3 for ultra-distance, while the Forerunner 970 and fēnix 8 also offer mapping or navigation options. Compare exact features: an outdoor-focused model’s name alone does not establish that it has the map type, satellite option, or routing function you need.

Compare battery life in the mode you will use

Smartwatch-mode days and GPS-mode hours describe different workloads. A long smartwatch estimate does not tell you whether a watch will last through a long event with GPS recording. Garmin’s figures below are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results.

Garmin’s April 30, 2025 battery article says its solar smartwatch estimates assume all-day wear with three hours per day outdoors in 50,000 lux. That smartwatch assumption is distinct from the Enduro 3 GPS solar estimate’s continuous-use condition. Treat both as conditional manufacturer estimates, not promises for every setting or environment. Garmin’s battery-life guidance and outdoor GPS battery guidance give the mode-specific context.

Garmin’s fēnix E Owner’s Manual, version 9, September 2026, says: “The actual battery life depends on the features enabled on your watch, such as wrist-based heart rate, smartphone notifications, GPS, internal sensors, and connected sensors.” Include your intended settings and connected accessories in your battery decision.

Check maps, navigation and satellite options

Navigation capabilities are model-dependent. Garmin’s guidance describes onboard maps and multi-band GPS on the Forerunner 970 and fēnix 8, and built-in maps and point-to-point navigation on the Enduro 3. Check the product page for the exact configuration and the kind of route guidance you want; “has maps” is not a detailed specification of how you can plan or follow a route.

If you expect to rely on satellite options in challenging environments, confirm that the exact model supports the option you want. Do not infer availability from a family name or a feature listed for a different size or edition.

Separate useful training features from headline metrics

Garmin’s triathlon guidance describes training status, training load, real-time stamina, recovery and sleep tracking for the Forerunner 970, Enduro 3 and fēnix 8. These are Garmin’s descriptions of its own metrics, not medical advice or a guarantee of improved performance. Consider whether the information fits your training decisions—and whether a required sensor is included or sold separately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Feature availability can also depend on the model and software. Garmin’s February 24, 2026 feature update lists new availability across Forerunner 570/970 and fēnix 8/Enduro 3 device groups; its Training Status compatibility page covers multiple generations. Neither establishes that every metric is available on every watch in those families. Check the exact model’s current feature information and software coverage before buying on the strength of a named metric.

Choose a display and size you will wear

Garmin describes the fēnix 8 in different sizes and display types, including AMOLED and solar-charging display configurations. Compare the actual size and display option you intend to buy: comfort and readability are personal, while battery estimates depend on configuration and mode. Avoid comparing a solar figure for one version directly with an AMOLED figure for another as if only the display changed.

Use this final model-fit check

  • Forerunner 970: Consider it if your priority is advanced running and multisport features, and its mapping and GPS runtime suit your routes and event. Its step speed loss metric requires an HRM 600 according to Garmin.
  • Enduro 3: Consider it for ultra-distance use where Garmin’s long-duration battery estimates, built-in maps and point-to-point navigation match your needs. Its solar estimates rely on specified light conditions.
  • fēnix 8: Consider it if you want Garmin’s described multisport and navigation capabilities and prefer to choose among its available sizes and display types. Verify the feature and battery details for the exact configuration.
  • Forerunner 570: Compare it if a running-oriented option is on your shortlist; Garmin’s battery article lists up to 11 days in smartwatch mode for the 47 mm version. Do not treat that as GPS runtime.

Before checkout, verify the exact model, size and display on Garmin’s current product information, then check the support page for each metric and accessory that matters to you. Availability, regional configurations and software support can change.
