Before buying a hand-finished independent chronograph, get the exact calibre, finishing operations, chronograph functions, service route, and written warranty terms for the specific watch. Treat phrases such as “hand-finished” and “in-house” as prompts for detail—not as substitutes for it. The checks below help distinguish a published specification from a claim that still needs confirmation.
1. Confirm the exact movement in the watch
Ask for the calibre designation and whether it is designed by the maker, based on a supplied movement, or modified from one. Get the answer in writing for the exact reference and configuration you are considering.

One example of why this matters: Dan Royter Watches describes the DR-1000 as a modified ETA-7750 in one part of its page, while also referring to a self-designed exclusive BNR-01. The page does not resolve which designation applies to a particular offered watch. Ask the maker directly rather than assuming the names refer to the same movement or configuration. Dan Royter Watches’ product and brand page presents these as the maker’s own descriptions.

Request a component-by-component explanation of the work: which parts are finished, which operations are done by hand, and which are machine-assisted. A list of techniques is more informative than the unqualified phrase “hand-finished,” but it still does not independently establish the amount of labor, consistency between watches, or quality of execution.

For its example, Dan Royter lists hand beveling, hand finishing on chronograph hammers, Côtes de Genève, perlage, and hand polishing or engraving on components. The maker’s page also describes straight-grained and hand-finished hammers, micro-blasting, polished screw countersinks, and black-polished screws. These are manufacturer claims; ask which apply to the exact watch and whether the finishing differs by component or production batch. See the maker’s published descriptions.
3. Map the chronograph functions
Have the seller explain what the central chronograph hand measures, what each subdial counts, and whether the movement has additional functions. A chronograph measures elapsed time, but its counter layout depends on the model. Do not infer a function from the presence or position of a subdial alone.
Dan Royter describes a 30-minute counter and a 12-hour counter on its example. Confirm that this layout belongs to the precise reference on offer, and ask for operating instructions if the controls or displays are unfamiliar. The maker’s page is the source for those example specifications.

4. Distinguish chronograph from chronometer
These terms describe different things. A chronograph has a mechanism for measuring elapsed time. A chronometer is a movement that has received an official rate certificate after testing by COSC, according to Chopard’s explanation.
If a seller claims chronometer certification, ask for documentation tied to the specific model or watch. A general accuracy claim, a maker’s internal regulation statement, or the presence of a chronograph does not by itself establish COSC certification.
5. Establish a realistic service route
Before ordering, find out who can service both the timekeeping train and the chronograph mechanism. Ask whether the maker services the calibre, whether independent watchmakers can obtain technical information and parts, and where repairs are performed. A specialist’s general qualifications do not guarantee that they accept a particular calibre.

The American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute’s published watchmaker standards describe chronograph service competencies that include identifying components from technical sheets, evaluating interactions, wear and functional defects, and recording performance such as rate and amplitude. This is a professional competency reference, not confirmation that a particular provider will service your watch.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk the maker or seller to put these ownership terms in writing:
- Service location and available authorized or independent service options.
- Whether chronograph-specific parts are stocked, supplied by the maker, or made to order.
- Estimated service price and turnaround time, and what work the estimate includes.
- Whether water resistance is tested after service, and to what stated standard.
- Warranty length, coverage, and exclusions.
Service terms are maker-specific. For comparison, TAG Heuer says its complete service includes dismantling, cleaning, inspection, replacement of worn components, lubrication, accuracy checks, seal replacement, and a 24-month service warranty; its page recommends maintenance every five years. Those are TAG Heuer’s stated terms, not a service schedule or warranty for independent makers.

6. Check fit, materials, and the exact configuration
Compare the dimensions and materials of the specific reference with a watch you can wear comfortably. Diameter alone is not enough: lug-to-lug length and thickness also affect how a case sits on the wrist. Published measurements can narrow the question, but cannot establish personal fit.
Dan Royter publishes a 41.8 mm diameter, 50.5 mm lug-to-lug length, and 13.6 mm thickness for its example, along with other model details. Confirm that the watch being offered has the same configuration, and ask for the case material, water-resistance statement, and included strap or bracelet. These example figures come from the maker’s page.
7. Compare watches on the same evidence
When weighing two or more chronographs, use the same questions for each. A consistent comparison prevents decorative finishing or an “independent” label from standing in for practical details.
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Movement | Exact calibre, origin, and whether it is designed by the maker, supplied, or modified. |
| Finishing | Named operations, the components they apply to, and which work is done by hand. |
| Chronograph | What the central hand and counters measure, plus any additional functions. |
| Certification | Whether a certification is claimed and documentation for the specific model or watch. |
| Wear and construction | Diameter, lug-to-lug length, thickness, case materials, stated water resistance, and included strap or bracelet. |
| Ownership | Service route, parts access, estimated cost and turnaround, warranty, and exclusions. |
| Purchase terms | Current price and availability, verified directly with the maker or an authorized seller. |
Published product pages can illustrate how much model-specific detail a maker provides, but they do not create a like-for-like value comparison. Parmigiani Fleurier’s TONDA PF SPORT CHRONOGRAPH page, for example, identifies a COSC-certified automatic manufacture calibre, column wheel, 65-hour power reserve, 42.5 mm case, 13.3 mm thickness, 100 m water resistance, and a three-year manufacturing-defect warranty subject to its sales warranty. These are specifications for that separate model, not evidence about an independent watchmaker’s product or service.
Likewise, F.P. Journe’s lineSport Chronographe Rattrapante page describes assembly stages performed by experienced watchmakers and a direct-gearing chronograph design. Treat such construction and assembly descriptions as claims to understand at the level of the exact model; the word “independent” does not imply a uniform movement design or finishing standard.
