What a perpetual calendar does—and where the name has limits
A perpetual calendar accounts for months with different lengths and the usual four-year leap-year cycle. Patek Philippe describes the complication as automatically taking monthly variations and leap years into account, and its instructions for reference 5373P-001 say that, if wound daily, the calendar will not need correction before February 28, 2100. The Gregorian calendar skips leap years in centennial years that are not divisible by 400. That makes 2100 a non-leap year, so a conventional four-year-cycle mechanism may need a manual correction. A. Lange & Söhne identifies 2100, 2200 and 2300 as centennial non-leap years and says the date must be advanced by one day on March 1 in those years. Designs that account for these exceptions differ; check the documentation for the exact movement rather than assuming all perpetual calendars share the same horizon.

A stopped watch introduces a separate issue: whether it loses its calendar state, preserves it temporarily, or requires a particular recovery procedure. The answer depends on the caliber and its power system, not just the complication’s name.

Compare the calendar indications and setting method
List the indications you will actually use, then inspect how they are displayed and corrected. Depending on the watch, a perpetual calendar may show the date, day, month, leap-year indication, moon phase or other information. For example, Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak reference 26579CS.OO.1225CS.01 lists week, day, date, astronomical moon, month and leap year; Patek Philippe’s overview describes day, date, month and leap-year displays on specific references. These are examples, not a universal display standard. Audemars Piguet’s perpetual calendar collection shows how indications vary across its models.
Ask the seller to demonstrate setting and correction using the instructions for the exact reference. Controls may involve a crown, several correctors or a more integrated system. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes a single-pusher calendar-setting system on the Polaris Perpetual Calendar Q9088180, designed to avoid displaying an incorrect combination of day, date, month and year during adjustment. - Ask for the exact reference and caliber, then obtain the corresponding official instructions.
- Have the seller show the normal setting procedure and explain what to do if the watch stops.
- Ask about any model-specific restrictions on when or how calendar corrections may be made; follow the manual rather than improvising.
- Check that all calendar indications agree with one another before buying, especially on a pre-owned watch.
Find out what happens when the watch stops
Do not infer recovery behavior from the word “perpetual.” One documented example, Seiko’s Kinetic Perpetual caliber 7D48, combines a perpetual calendar with Kinetic power and Auto-Relay. In its power-save state, the hands stop while time and calendar information are preserved for up to four years; when worn again, the hands reset. This describes that caliber and system, not perpetual calendars generally. Seiko explains the Kinetic Perpetual system.

A watch that stops when left unworn may need its time and calendar restored, while a system that preserves information in a sleep state behaves differently. These are not directly comparable technologies: ask what the specified figure means for that model and what steps are required to bring it back into use.

Check fit, wear specifications and water resistance
Try on the exact watch if possible. Compare case diameter and thickness, material, dial legibility, and strap or bracelet—not just the complication. A large or information-dense dial may be harder to read or wear comfortably for some buyers; specifications alone cannot establish personal fit.
Use manufacturer figures as model-specific facts, not promises about an entire collection. The US product page for Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 26579CS.OO.1225CS.01 lists a 41 mm case, 20 m water resistance and a 40-hour power reserve, along with self-winding Calibre 5134 and multiple calendar indications. Those values apply to that reference and that page; they should not be generalized to other Royal Oak models or treated as an activity recommendation. For any watch, ask when its water resistance was last tested and whether that test is documented. A stated rating is a manufacturer specification; it does not establish the current condition of a pre-owned watch.

Verify service access, warranty and pre-owned condition
Before committing, establish who can service the exact caliber, what warranty remains, and what documentation comes with the watch. For a pre-owned example, request the service date and invoice, the provider’s identity, a written condition disclosure, and written confirmation of any water-resistance test. The surfaced IWC Da Vinci instructions recommend water-resistance testing by an authorized official agent whenever the watch is opened and serviced. - Confirm the reference and caliber match the paperwork and instructions.
- Ask for a dated service record and invoice, if available, and identify who performed the work.
- Request written details of remaining manufacturer or dealer warranty and the authorized service channel.
- Ask who is responsible if the calendar does not function correctly after purchase, and whether a return period or independent inspection is available.
- If the case has been opened for service, ask for documentation of the recommended water-resistance test.
A practical comparison checklist
When comparing two or more watches, record the answers side by side. Keep figures tied to the model and source that states them; a blank or unstated specification is a question to resolve, not an invitation to guess.
