Before buying a pre-owned chronograph, check that the watch and its paperwork match, inspect the exterior, and confirm the chronograph starts, stops, and resets as its manual describes. Then ask for dated service records and a recent, model-appropriate water-resistance test. For confidence about the movement, accuracy, and internal condition, arrange an inspection with a qualified watchmaker before the sale is final.
Start with the watch’s identity and history
Compare the reference and serial details on the watch with its paperwork when available. Ask the seller to explain missing documents, replaced parts, or changes from the original configuration. Papers and serial numbers can support a history, but neither alone proves authenticity.

Authentication claims are specific to the seller and program. Rolex says its eligible Certified Pre-Owned watches are authenticated in Rolex workshops, and states that only Rolex can confirm a Rolex watch’s authenticity. Bucherer describes serial verification as one step in its own certification process. These are descriptions of their respective programs, not universal authentication tests.

Find out who did the work, what was replaced, whether the movement was overhauled, and whether the case was pressure-tested afterward. The word “serviced” can describe different levels of work, so request the actual work description and any warranty. If the history is missing or dated, ask an authorized service center or qualified independent watchmaker for an inspection and written estimate before you commit.

Inspect the exterior without opening the case
Use good light and examine the crystal, case edges, bezel, dial, hands, crown, pushers, bracelet or strap, and clasp. Look for dents, corrosion, moisture beneath the crystal, damaged or misaligned hands, uneven gaps, loose bracelet links, and signs of heavy polishing. These observations can flag questions, but appearance alone cannot establish the movement’s condition. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s functional-check service also begins with a visual inspection before technical checks.
- Check that the crown and pushers appear intact and sit as expected for the model.
- Look for moisture or corrosion, which warrant professional assessment rather than a seller’s reassurance.
- Ask whether visible replacement parts or refinishing are original to the watch or part of later work.
Do not open the case yourself to inspect the movement. A qualified watchmaker can examine the interior without turning a visual check into a risk of damage.
Test the chronograph controls carefully
Use the specific watch’s manual and ask the seller’s permission before operating the controls. If the watch is dry, observe whether the chronograph starts, stops, and resets, and whether its hands return to their intended positions. Note sticky pushers, an incomplete reset, or hands that do not behave as expected. Stop if a control feels abnormal; do not force it.
A brief demonstration shows only that the functions appear to respond at that moment. It does not establish chronograph accuracy, internal condition, or the need for service. Panerai describes its technical diagnosis as testing chronometry and each function—work that calls for suitable equipment, not just a quick test by a buyer.

Never operate chronograph pushers underwater or while the watch is wet. Patek Philippe advises consulting the relevant user guide and avoiding use of controls underwater or when wet.
Do not assume water resistance
A rating on the case, the watch’s age, or a seller’s verbal assurance does not show that a pre-owned watch still seals properly. Gaskets can age, and impacts to the crown, pushers, or crystal can affect sealing. A watch that once met its stated rating can fail a later pressure test.
Ask for a recent water-resistance test suited to the exact model and the way you intend to use it. Get the result in writing and have a qualified professional interpret it. Do not test a watch by immersing it yourself. Brand guidance varies: Jaeger-LeCoultre says seals can dry and lose elasticity; TAG Heuer says water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed and recommends authorized checks every two years for watches regularly exposed to water; Carl F. Bucherer advises an annual check for its watches. Follow the relevant manual and the test result for the particular watch, rather than applying one brand’s schedule or advice to every chronograph.

Arrange a professional inspection
A qualified watchmaker can assess movement condition, rate or chronometry, functions, and water resistance with suitable equipment. Jaeger-LeCoultre describes a functional check that includes visual inspection, magnetism, accuracy, and water resistance. Panerai says its technical diagnosis tests chronometry, each function, and water resistance. The scope and method of a seller’s inspection may differ, so ask what was tested and request written results.
- Ask for model-appropriate readings and an explanation of what they mean; a result is more useful when tied to the watch’s specifications and intended use.
- Request a written estimate for any recommended work before purchase.
- Do not treat a phone app, a short wrist check, a chronometer designation, or a seller’s verbal assurance as proof of the watch’s present-day accuracy or water resistance.
Compare certification with an independent inspection
A certified pre-owned program can bundle authentication, servicing, testing, and a written guarantee. An independent inspection can help assess a particular listing from another seller. Compare the actual paperwork and terms rather than relying on the word “certified.”

Before choosing either route, verify the seller’s authorized status, what the certification covers, the written guarantee, the return policy, and where the terms apply. A certificate does not replace reading those terms or checking the individual watch.

Ask about service timing for the exact model
There is no single service interval established for all chronographs. Manufacturer recommendations differ: Patek Philippe recommends service every eight to ten years for its quartz and mechanical watches; TAG Heuer’s service page refers to maintenance recommended every five years; Carl F. Bucherer gives an approximate four-to-five-year recommendation and says timing depends on model, climate, use, and treatment. These are brand-specific recommendations, not a universal schedule. Ask the maker or a qualified watchmaker about the watch’s exact caliber, history, and use.

Assess the whole transaction, not just the asking price
No universal fair price or discount can be set without knowing the model and the individual watch. Compare the asking price with its condition, originality, service history, estimated work, authentication evidence, seller reputation, and the terms that protect you if an inspection finds a problem.
