Establish whether the gem work is factory-original, an authorized replacement, or a later modification; review service and condition evidence; and put inspection, return, and warranty terms in writing. A loupe can reveal details, but it cannot prove authenticity or factory originality.
Start with the exact watch and gem configuration
Ask the seller for the exact model and reference, case material, movement, and a written description of every gem-set area. Clarify whether the dial, bezel, case, bracelet, or other components—and the stones themselves—have been replaced, reset, or modified, and who did the work.

“Gem-set” does not mean factory-set. The work may have been done by the manufacturer, during authorized service, or later by a third party. Compare the described configuration with manufacturer materials for that specific reference and seek a brand or qualified specialist opinion if the match is unclear. A serial number or warranty card can support identification, but neither proves authenticity or the originality of the gem work by itself.
Certification labels also need context. Chrono24’s certification definitions distinguish customized watches, including examples with diamonds added to a dial or case, from watches eligible for its certification. That is Chrono24’s program policy, not a universal rule about value or authenticity.

Establish who authenticated it—and what they checked
Authentication depends on the brand and the specific program. Rolex states, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Its Certified Pre-Owned process returns watches to Rolex workshops for configuration verification, authentication, service, and testing. Rolex describes a two-year international guarantee for program watches, with exceptions concerning waterproofness and original precision for some of the oldest watches. Those terms belong to Rolex’s program; they do not establish the scope of another seller’s certification.
Ask who performed the checks, where they were performed, and what the certificate or warranty actually covers. A certificate may address the watch without authenticating its box, papers, or accessories: Chrono24 says its assessment of watch authenticity is separate from its authentication of those items. Treat paperwork as supporting evidence, not a substitute for inspection.

Inspect the stones and settings
In good light, look for missing or visibly damaged stones, uneven settings, prongs that appear loose, and stones that differ noticeably in color, size, or cut. These observations can identify questions to resolve; they do not certify the stones or establish who set them.

CHANEL says it evaluates diamond clarity with 10x magnification. Its stated GIA-certificate thresholds for its creations are a round center diamond of 0.25 carat or greater, a fancy-cut center stone of 0.50 carat or greater, and any colored diamond center stone. These are CHANEL-specific practices, not universal requirements.
- For colored stones: Ask whether treatments are known and what evidence supports the seller’s description. CHANEL says treatments such as oiling emeralds and heating corundum may be used in its creations, and that beryllium diffusion may be used for sapphires in some watch creations. These disclosures apply to CHANEL’s own work and should not be generalized to other makers.
- For close viewing: A 10x loupe is an optional aid for seeing small details. It cannot identify every treatment, establish a stone’s provenance, or prove that the watch or setting is genuine.
If stone identity or treatment materially affects your decision, ask a qualified gemologist what can be assessed while the stones remain set. A report about a stone does not, by itself, prove that the manufacturer installed it.

Check the watch’s condition and consistency
Review the case edges and finishing, crystal, dial, hands, bezel, bracelet or strap, clasp, crown, and case back. Look for damage, inconsistent finishing, and components that do not fit the reference or period. Request clear photographs and a written description of known defects and modifications; a seller’s condition grade is still the seller’s description.
Compare the visible details with the reference-specific materials, but do not rely on photographs alone. A specialist guide warns that photographs can conceal refinishing, replaced parts, or missing service documentation. Where those issues could change your decision, arrange an in-person inspection or obtain findings from a qualified professional before purchase.

Review service records and arrange an inspection when needed
Request dated service paperwork identifying who did the work, when it was done, and what parts were replaced. Ask whether timing and water-resistance results are available. Missing records are not automatically a reason to reject an older watch, but they leave more uncertainty about condition and likely service expense.
Consider an inspection before committing if the watch is valuable, its service history is unclear, or the seller’s description leaves questions about originality or condition. Use an authorized watchmaker or a suitably qualified independent watchmaker, and ask for the findings in writing. The appropriate route can depend on the brand: Rolex describes examination in its own workshops, while Vacheron Constantin says its Certified Pre-Owned watches are inspected and serviced by a Vacheron Constantin watchmaker. These program descriptions illustrate different brand-specific scopes, not a universal certification standard.

Put the seller’s protections in writing
Before paying, establish the return window, who provides any warranty, what it excludes, and who pays for inspection or repair. Ask what happens if an inspection finds aftermarket gem work, an undisclosed replacement part, or a material condition issue. Do not assume “certified” means the same checks or protections from every seller.
- Confirm whether you may have the watch inspected during the return period.
- Get the warranty provider, duration, exclusions, and repair process in writing.
- Clarify how a mismatch between the seller’s description and an inspection finding will be handled.
Compare the total proposition, not just the asking price
Compare candidates with the same reference and gem configuration wherever possible. Include originality, stone condition and documentation, case and movement condition, service state, accessories, seller support, warranty, return rights, and any cost needed to verify or correct unresolved issues.
Do not assume aftermarket stones add value. Chrono24’s treatment of some customized diamond-set watches concerns eligibility for its certification; it is not a universal market valuation rule. No general premium, discount, or market-wide risk rate is established for aftermarket gem work. When configuration or value remains uncertain, treat that uncertainty as a cost to resolve or account for in your decision.
