An automatic watch won’t run indefinitely off your wrist: when its power reserve runs out, it stops. To keep it wound and ready, use a compatible automatic watch winder or wind it by hand as its manufacturer instructs. If you don’t mind resetting it, you can also let it stop and restart it before wearing.
Why an automatic watch stops when it’s unworn
Wrist movement winds an automatic watch’s mainspring, which stores the energy that powers the movement. When the watch is off your wrist, that stored energy lasts only for its stated power reserve. Patek Philippe says self-winding movements typically have a reserve of 38–48 hours, with exceptions for some models; this is not a universal specification. Check your watch’s manual for its reserve. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations explain the range and note those exceptions.

A watch stopping after it has been left unworn is usually the expected result of its reserve running down, not by itself evidence that it needs service.
Choose how you want to manage it

How to restart it by hand
- Find the model-specific instructions. Check the user manual for the recommended crown position and number of turns. TAG Heuer advises winding sufficiently after a period without wear and consulting the manual for the model’s recommended turns. TAG Heuer’s restart guidance is an example of why the model matters.
- Wind it as directed. Turn the crown gently in the specified manner. Do not assume a turn count from another watch applies to yours.
- Set the watch. Adjust the time and, if needed, the calendar or other functions according to the manual.
Manufacturer examples differ: Baume & Mercier suggests about 20 clockwise turns as general restart guidance, while TAG Heuer’s care FAQ says a minimum of 40 turns for its general recommendation and 100 for the V4. Those figures apply to the manufacturers’ guidance, not to every automatic watch. Baume & Mercier’s FAQ and TAG Heuer’s care FAQ provide their respective instructions.

When to use a watch winder
A winder is a convenience for keeping a compatible watch wound; it is not a requirement. Before using one, check the watch’s manual or contact the manufacturer to confirm that a winder is suitable and to learn the correct rotation direction and settings. Harry Winston, for example, advises contacting Client Care for the correct winding direction for a particular automatic watch. Harry Winston’s FAQ describes its model-specific guidance.
If you only wear the watch occasionally and are comfortable setting it again, letting it stop and winding it by hand is a straightforward alternative. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal winder setting or show that a winder is necessary for every automatic movement.

Storing a watch you won’t wear for a while
Keep the watch dry, shaded, and away from moisture and direct sunlight. TAG Heuer suggests winding about once a month during storage, but follow your own watch’s care instructions if they differ. TAG Heuer’s usage recommendations cover its storage advice.
When service is a separate question
Occasional stopping after the power reserve has run down does not, on its own, indicate a service problem. Service intervals depend on the manufacturer: Patek Philippe recommends servicing its quartz and mechanical watches every eight to ten years through an official Service Center or Authorized Retailer. Treat that as Patek Philippe’s recommendation, not a universal schedule for all watches. Patek Philippe’s care recommendations provide the interval.
