Before money changes hands, verify that the watch is genuinely an LM1 EVO, match its serial and edition to original MB&F paperwork, test both time zones and the power-reserve display, inspect the movement and case for shock or moisture damage, and buy only with meaningful return and payment protection. The EVO is a technically distinctive hand-wound watch, so a convincing photograph or a seller’s verbal assurance is not enough.
Start by confirming that the listing is really an LM1 EVO
MB&F positions Legacy Machine 1 EVO as the modern return of its original dual-time Legacy Machine. It retains the two independent hour-and-minute displays and the suspended balance concept, but adds a smaller case, an inclined power-reserve display and EVO-oriented wearability and shock-protection features.

The easiest way to catch a mislabeled listing is to compare it with the original LM1. The original page describes a 44 mm by 16 mm case and a 45-hour power reserve. LM1 EVO is smaller and has the longer reserve shown below. A listing that combines the original dimensions with EVO terminology needs an explanation before you proceed.

| Identification point | Original LM1 | LM1 EVO |
|---|---|---|
| Case dimensions | 44 mm diameter; 16 mm thick | 42 mm diameter; 16.8 mm thick |
| Power reserve | 45 hours | 60 hours |

Do not rely on the seller’s title alone. Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case back, movement, crowns, buckle and serial engraving, then compare those images with the exact edition being offered.

Know the available editions and shared specifications
LM1 EVO is offered in grade-5 titanium with a rhodium dial plate or in 5N+ rose gold with a green dial plate. The rose-gold version is limited to 33 pieces, making the edition number and matching paperwork particularly important. Material affects both scarcity and the way wear appears: titanium tends to show a different surface character from polished or brushed rose gold, while gold cases can carry more visible dents and edge marks when mishandled.
| Specification | LM1 EVO detail |
|---|---|
| Case | 42 mm diameter; 16.8 mm height; 18 mm lugs |

These are model specifications, not a condition report. A used watch can fall short of its published reserve, water resistance or timing performance if it has been neglected, shocked or repaired incorrectly.
Authenticate the watch and establish provenance
Authentication is a process of matching the physical watch, the edition and the paperwork. Complete these checks before sending an irreversible payment.
1. Record the case-back serial
Photograph the entire case back and transcribe the engraved serial exactly, including spacing or punctuation. MB&F states that every watch has a case-back serial number. A cropped image, a serial that is unreadable, or a number that appears altered is a reason to pause.
2. Inspect the warranty card or booklet
Request the original warranty card or booklet. It should show the purchase date, the watch’s serial number and completion or signature by an official MB&F retailer. MB&F explains that warranty validity depends on those details and on purchase through an official retailer. A blank card, a card with mismatched numbers, or a document completed by an unverified seller does not provide the same protection.

3. Ask MB&F to verify the serial
Contact MB&F or an official retailer before funds become irreversible. MB&F specifically invites people who find a pre-owned Machine on another platform to request serial verification. Send the serial, edition description and photographs, and keep the response with your purchase records. Verification supports the identity of the watch; it does not certify its current mechanical condition.
4. Match the exact edition
Compare the case material and dial plate with the listing: titanium should correspond to the rhodium configuration, while the 5N+ rose-gold model should have the green dial plate. For the rose-gold edition, ask how the stated piece number relates to the limited 33-piece run. The serial, edition description and visible components should agree across the watch, listing and documents.
5. Check the complete set
Ask for the original box, leather folio or wallet, manual, spare or alternate straps, buckle and every available service invoice. Missing accessories do not automatically prove a counterfeit, but they reduce provenance and should affect both your risk assessment and the price you are willing to pay.
6. Trace ownership and prior work
Request a written ownership history and ask whether the watch has suffered a violent shock, moisture ingress or any repair outside authorized channels. MB&F’s warranty exclusions include negligence, violent shocks, inappropriate treatment and related damage. A seller who cannot answer basic questions about storage, use or service should offer stronger inspection and return protections, not a higher level of trust.
Inspect the movement and functions
The flying balance is the visual centerpiece, but it is also where impact damage and poor servicing can become expensive. Arrange an inspection by a qualified independent watchmaker if the seller permits it, ideally before the return period expires.

Observe the balance safely
Watch the 14 mm balance through the crystal in several positions. Its motion should appear consistent rather than erratic, with no obvious impact marks, contamination or contact with surrounding parts. Do not touch the balance, probe the movement or ask an inexperienced seller to open the watch. High-resolution photographs can reveal obvious damage, but they cannot replace timing and amplitude measurements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMeasure timing and amplitude
A watchmaker should place the watch on a timing instrument, record rate and amplitude in multiple positions, and note beat error or other abnormalities. The official specifications describe the balance, double hairspring and hand-finished architecture; they do not certify the condition of a particular pre-owned example. Ask for the readings in writing and ask what corrective work would be required if they are poor.
Test both independent time zones
Using the correct crown operation, set each hours-and-minutes display separately. Confirm that each dial moves through its full setting range, that the displays remain independent, and that neither hand slips or stalls. After setting, compare both indications over several hours to identify obvious loss, gain or intermittent stopping.
Check winding and the reserve display
Wind the watch according to the manual and observe whether the inclined power-reserve indicator advances smoothly through its range. A full wind should deliver the model’s stated reserve when the movement is healthy. Record the start time, leave the watch dial-up in a stable position and document when it stops; a short result is a service concern even if the watch continues to run.
Listen and look for warning signs
Unusual scraping, clicking, a crown that feels gritty, hands that hesitate, or a reserve indicator that jumps instead of moving progressively should be treated as mechanical evidence, not character. Stop winding if the crown binds. A qualified watchmaker can distinguish normal hand-wound resistance from a damaged winding train.

Inspect the case, crystals, strap and water-resistance evidence
Crystals and dial-side structure
Examine the domed front sapphire and the box-style sapphire back under angled light. Chips at an edge, deep scratches, cracks or evidence of polishing around the crystal seat can compromise appearance and sealing. Check the dial plates, printed markings and visible bridges for dust, fingerprints, corrosion or displaced components.
Case geometry and finishing
Inspect every case edge, lug, crown guard and transition between brushed and polished surfaces. Sharp edges that have become rounded may indicate over-polishing. Deep dents, tool marks around the crowns or asymmetrical lug profiles suggest impact or an aggressive refinish. Compare photographs of both sides rather than relying on a single frontal image.
Crowns, threads and clasp
Screw-down crowns should engage cleanly and tighten without cross-threading. The folding buckle should close securely, release deliberately and show no cracks or distorted hinges. Check the strap attachment points for elongation or damage, especially if the strap has been changed repeatedly.
Rubber strap condition
Flex the rubber strap gently and inspect it for hardening, surface cracking, tears and stretched holes. Because the strap and buckle are quick-change/interchangeable, an alternate strap can be useful, but it does not erase damage to the original components. Confirm that every supplied strap is compatible and that the buckle is the correct matching part.

Water resistance is a current condition, not a permanent promise
Ask for a recent pressure or water-resistance test and obtain the result or service invoice. MB&F notes that water resistance and seals require proper conditions and regular replacement after the warranty period. An old test is historical evidence only; it is not permission to expose a pre-owned watch to water today. Until a current test is completed, keep it dry.

Evaluate documents and service history
The strongest file includes the original warranty documentation, purchase record, serial verification, service invoices, pressure-test results and photographs taken before shipment. Look for dates, the workshop or retailer name, work performed, parts replaced and the watch’s serial number. A vague statement such as “recently serviced” is not equivalent to an invoice.
Ask specifically whether the movement was regulated, whether seals were replaced, whether the crowns or crystal were removed, and whether any case polishing was performed. If a non-authorized repair occurred, request the watchmaker’s identity and a detailed report. This matters because future warranty claims, parts decisions and resale confidence all depend on knowing what was done.
Service records should also help you plan the first inspection after purchase. If there is no reliable history, budget for a qualified condition check immediately and negotiate on the basis of that uncertainty rather than assuming the watch is ready for daily wear.

| Seller route | What the route offers | What you still need to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| MB&F Certified Pre-Owned | MB&F says its Geneva workshop cleans and polishes the watch, checks water resistance and movement functions, regulates it and restores it with original parts when needed. MB&F states that CPO pieces are 100% legitimate, in perfect working condition and covered by a two-year unconditional warranty. | Confirm the exact serial, edition, included accessories, warranty start date and the written terms supplied with that particular piece. |
| Official MB&F retailer | An official-retailer purchase provides the clearest path for warranty administration and documented service through official channels. | Verify the retailer in MB&F’s current retailer network and retain the completed warranty card, invoice and every service document. |
| Independent dealer or private seller | Potentially wider availability and a negotiable transaction structure. | Require serial verification, high-resolution movement and case photographs, a qualified inspection contingency, a written return period and escrow or another protected payment method. These protections do not mean MB&F has approved the seller. |
For a private transaction, write the inspection terms before payment: who performs the inspection, how many days you have, what counts as a material discrepancy, who pays shipping and how a refund is issued. Do not accept a return policy that excludes undisclosed damage or requires you to prove fraud before returning a watch that fails the agreed inspection.
Use a protected purchase process
- Collect evidence. Save the listing, seller messages, serial photographs, edition description, accessories list and promised condition in one folder.
- Verify the serial. Obtain written confirmation from MB&F or an official retailer before sending an irreversible transfer.
- Inspect before acceptance. Use a qualified watchmaker during the contractual return period; record timing, amplitude, winding behavior, reserve performance and water-resistance results.
- Compare the delivered watch. Check serial, material, dial plate, buckle, straps, box and papers against the listing and invoice before removing protective packaging.
- Document discrepancies immediately. Photograph any damage, stop wearing the watch if moisture or mechanical trouble appears, and notify the seller through the agreed channel.
Escrow or a payment method with a genuine dispute process is preferable to an irreversible bank transfer. Never let a seller’s deadline override serial verification or an inspection contingency.
How to negotiate when the history is incomplete
No reliable current pre-owned transaction statistic or universal fair-price range is established by the official material available for this model. Do not anchor your offer to an undated internet listing or an unsupported percentage of retail. Instead, price the evidence you can actually verify.
- A complete set with matching warranty documentation, service invoices and a recent pressure test reduces administrative and mechanical uncertainty.
- Missing box, folio, manual, straps, buckle or invoices lowers completeness even when the serial is genuine.
- Unknown timing, amplitude, reserve performance or water resistance justifies a condition inspection before acceptance and a reserve for possible service.
- Unexplained polishing, impact marks, moisture evidence or unauthorized work should be treated as repair risk, not cosmetic bargaining points alone.
Ask the seller to resolve discrepancies with documents or an independent inspection. If the answer is “the watch is sold as seen” while the price assumes excellent condition, walk away.

Red flags that should stop the transaction
- The case-back serial is hidden, altered, inconsistent or withheld until after payment.
- The warranty card lacks a purchase date, serial or official-retailer completion, or the seller refuses to show it.
- The listing mixes original LM1 dimensions and reserve figures with LM1 EVO photographs or language.
- The material and dial combination does not match the claimed titanium/rhodium or rose-gold/green configuration.
- The seller refuses a qualified inspection, current pressure test or written return period.
- The balance shows obvious impact marks, contamination or erratic motion, or the crowns feel damaged.
- The watch has moisture inside, corrosion, a cracked crystal, hardened rubber or a clasp that will not secure.
- The seller dismisses a missing service history while claiming recent authorized work.
- Payment must be irreversible, rushed or sent to a person or account different from the documented seller.
A practical pre-purchase checklist
- Confirm the listing identifies LM1 EVO rather than the original LM1.
- Match the 42 mm by 16.8 mm EVO case profile and the correct edition materials.
- Photograph and transcribe the case-back serial.
- Obtain the original warranty card or booklet and verify its date, serial and retailer completion.
- Request serial confirmation from MB&F or an official retailer.
- Inventory the box, leather folio, manual, straps, buckle and invoices.
- Have a qualified watchmaker check timing, amplitude, winding, both time zones and reserve behavior.
- Inspect balance motion, crystals, case edges, crown threads, clasp and strap attachment points.
- Obtain a current pressure or water-resistance test before water exposure.
- Get a written return and inspection agreement and use protected payment.
Bottom line: buy the evidence, not just the spectacle
A pre-owned LM1 EVO is a sensible purchase only when its identity, edition, provenance and mechanical condition can be demonstrated. Serial verification and matching paperwork establish what the watch is; an independent inspection establishes how the individual example is performing. If either side of that equation is missing, the safest decision is to preserve your funds until the seller supplies the evidence and protections the watch deserves.
