Before buying a pre-owned TAG Heuer Carrera chronograph, confirm the exact reference, compare its components with that reference’s official specifications, check that its serial and paperwork tell a consistent story, and assess service history, condition, seller protections and price. Treat water resistance as unverified until it has been tested recently: an original rating does not establish that an older watch is still sealed.
Start with the exact reference, not just “Carrera”
Carrera chronographs differ in dimensions, movement, dial layout, case construction and water-resistance rating. Ask the seller for the complete reference number and use the TAG Heuer page for that precise model as your comparison point. Check the case size, dial, hands, bezel, movement or calibre, date position, subdials, bracelet or strap, clasp and case-back style.

For example, TAG Heuer lists the discontinued CBM2110.BA0651 as a 41 mm automatic Calibre 16 chronograph with a date and 48-hour power reserve. The discontinued CBK2115.BA0715 is also a 41 mm Calibre 16 Carrera with a 48-hour power reserve, but its page specifies 100 m water resistance. A separate CBM2110.FC6454 page lists 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph counters and 100 m water resistance. These examples show why specifications for one variant cannot stand in for another.

Check the serial and paperwork for consistency
Ask for a clear image of the case-back serial and, if available, the warranty card or electronic warranty record. Compare the visible reference and serial with the details on the documents, including purchase information where it appears. TAG Heuer’s warranty FAQ says the case-back serial must remain legible and that warranty service requires properly completed documentation, including the purchase date, reference and serial. Warranty validity also depends on an authorized-retailer purchase and applicable conditions.
Consistent documents help support a coherent ownership history; they are not a stand-alone authenticity certificate. A missing card can affect warranty eligibility, but it does not, on its own, establish that a watch is genuine or fake. Regional warranty conditions may differ.

Ask what service has been done
Request the date and provider for the last service, along with dated invoices or service records describing the work and any replaced parts. TAG Heuer’s US complete-service page recommends maintenance every five years, while noting that the optimal cycle depends on the particular timepiece and its use. The page describes disassembly, examination, replacement of worn parts and seals, and a 24-month service warranty for the cited complete-service offering.

Inspect the watch and test its functions
Inspect the watch in person when possible. If buying remotely, request sharp, well-lit photos from multiple angles, including the case back, dial, clasp and bracelet or strap. Look closely at:
- Crystal, dial, hands and bezel for damage, unevenness or signs of moisture.
- Case edges and finishing for inconsistent surfaces, corrosion or damage.
- Bracelet links or strap, clasp, crown and pushers for wear or loose parts.
- Visible components that appear inconsistent with the exact reference.
Ask to see the chronograph start, stop and reset as expected for that model. These checks can reveal issues that merit closer inspection, but they are practical buyer prompts—not a TAG Heuer-published counterfeit test. Do not try to verify water resistance with a home water test.

Verify water resistance before exposing it to water
Ask whether the seller has a recent pressure-test result if the watch is described as water-ready. TAG Heuer’s Calibre 16 user guide gives 100 m water resistance for Carrera models while qualifying features by model; that family-level guidance does not establish the rating of every reference or the sealing condition of an individual used watch.
TAG Heuer says water resistance cannot be permanently guaranteed. Its care guidance suggests authorized checks every two years for watches regularly exposed to water. If a watch is older, has unknown service history or lacks a recent test result, have a qualified or authorized provider assess it before any water exposure.

Compare the whole purchase, not just the asking price
Compare listings for the same reference, or for a genuinely equivalent configuration, and account for condition, documented service, originality of visible parts, warranty status, included components and seller protections. For a bracelet model, check whether all links are included; also consider the return window and how the seller handles disputes.
No current transaction-price benchmark is established here, so an asking price should not be called fair just because it is below original retail or resembles a listing for a different Carrera. Estimate likely service costs or missing components, then compare the total purchase cost and the protections attached to the sale.
