What to check before buying a rare Patek Philippe watch at auction
Work through the lot in this order: identify the watch being offered, review its documents and condition, investigate the ownership and rarity claims, then settle the purchase terms and delivery route. Ask the auction house to answer questions in writing and to explain any inconsistency between its description, photographs and supporting records.

Does the lot describe the exact watch you want?
Match the reference and configuration
Ask the specialist to confirm the reference, case material, movement or caliber, dial and complication configuration, serial information as represented in the lot, and which components are included. Compare those details with the catalog entry, photographs, service documents and any archive paperwork. Ask about discrepancies rather than assuming they are harmless; a configuration difference can affect how comparable another watch really is.
Find out what the auction house inspected
Ask whether the watch is currently running, what was examined, whether the case was opened, and who performed the inspection. Inspection practices differ. For example, Piguet describes opening most watches in its own sales to examine movement type, authenticity and quality; that is a statement about Piguet’s practice, not a standard that can be assumed of every auction house or a guarantee that an examination resolves every authenticity question.
#1 Best Overall
- Pre-Loved Condition: Excellent; Light scuffing and wear to leather strap
- Length: 9.0" (22 cm),
- Made in Switzerland
- Buckle closure
- Signature upon delivery required
Do not open the case yourself to check serial numbers. Patek Philippe says the movement number is on the movement and the case number is inside the case back; it directs that case-back removal be done only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center.
What do the papers establish?
Patek Philippe distinguishes the original Certificate of Origin from an Extract from the Archives. The company describes the Certificate of Origin as a document delivered with each new watch and says it identifies the movement, case and reference numbers. It cannot be reissued, so a missing original cannot simply be replaced with a duplicate. An Extract is different: Patek Philippe calls it a “partial transcript” of its records for a particular timepiece.
| Document | What to establish | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Certificate of Origin | Ask whether the original document is present and whether its identifying details correspond to the lot. | Patek Philippe says it cannot be reissued. Its presence does not, by itself, establish the current condition of the watch. |
| Extract from the Archives | Ask for a copy, its issue date and the exact information it records. Compare it with the watch and the auction description. | Patek Philippe describes it as a partial transcript. The company says photographs are needed to check visual compliance with archive descriptions; an extract is not a current condition report or a comprehensive certification of every component now on the watch. |
If you are considering ordering an Extract
Patek Philippe’s published FAQ, accessed in 2026, states that a watch must have been first sold more than 10 years before the request, requests are limited to one per timepiece in a 12-month period, the fee is CHF 500, and delivery is within 10 weeks after order confirmation. The FAQ also says the fee is refunded if a watch is ineligible. These are the company’s stated service terms, not market statistics, and they may change. Confirm current eligibility, fees and timing with Patek Philippe before making the extract part of your bidding plan.

What condition and service work might the watch need?
Read the condition report alongside detailed photographs, then ask specific questions about areas that can materially change a watch’s originality, appearance or repair exposure:
- Is the dial original, refinished or otherwise altered? What is known about the hands?
- Has the case been polished, repaired, engraved or otherwise altered?
- Are movement parts or other components replacements? If so, which ones, and when were they fitted?
- What service history is documented, who performed the work, and are invoices or a service guarantee available?
- Does the watch run, and what testing or inspection supports the description of its present operation?
There is no universal condition rubric established here for every Patek Philippe auction lot. Ask the lot’s specialists to describe what they observed and what they cannot confirm rather than treating a brief catalog grade as a complete technical assessment.
Estimate service exposure before bidding
When inspection is possible, request a written estimate from a qualified watchmaker before the sale, particularly for an aged watch or one that may need service. Piguet specifically advises buyers in those circumstances to seek an estimate at their own expense where possible and to bid accordingly; this is Piguet’s advice, not a universal auction-house policy.

Ask whether any recent service was performed by a Patek Philippe authorized retailer or service center, and request the invoice and any service guarantee. Patek Philippe says its timepieces must be serviced by authorized retailers or service centers. Service paperwork can document work, but it is not proof that every present component is original. A running watch is not necessarily free of service needs, and an auction inspection does not guarantee future reliability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow strong are the provenance and rarity claims?
Separate a documented ownership chain from a catalog narrative. Ask what records support each named owner, date or transfer, and whether the evidence is available for review. If an account is based on seller recollection or auction-house description rather than documents, treat it as such.
Apply the same discipline to rarity claims: ask what feature or configuration is said to be rare and what lot-specific evidence supports that description. A Phillips listing, for example, makes claims about family provenance, an archive extract and rarity for one particular watch; it does not establish those claims for another lot or demonstrate market-wide scarcity.

Patek Philippe does not provide resale-value estimates and recommends consulting an auction house or specialist dealer about older watches. When comparing auction results, use watches with a genuinely similar reference and configuration, material, condition, originality, documentation, provenance and sale context. An estimate or result for a superficially similar watch is not a valuation of the lot in front of you.

Calculate the all-in purchase amount
Get the applicable sale conditions before bidding. Ask the auction house to state the buyer’s premium, taxes, payment costs, payment deadline, shipping charges and any other costs that apply to your transaction. Add the applicable charges to your bid to establish the amount you can afford. Premiums, taxes, inspection rights, guarantees, return rights and dispute procedures vary by sale; do not assume a policy that the relevant conditions do not state.
Check the material and shipping route
Ask whether the strap, dial or another component contains crocodile, alligator, ivory or other animal-derived or regulated material. Restrictions may apply to import, export, transport or customs clearance, depending on the material and route. Piguet warns that some lots can face CITES or other restrictions and says it does not arrange certain permits or international shipments. Confirm requirements for the specific watch and destination with the auction house and relevant authorities before bidding; do not assume the seller will obtain permits or that a carrier can ship the lot.
How to compare two or more lots
Compare the evidence, not just the headline estimate or the word “rare.” Use the same questions for each candidate:
- Identity: How closely do reference, material, movement, dial and complications match your target?
- Documents and provenance: Which original papers or archive documents are present, and how well supported is the ownership history?
- Condition and originality: What is confirmed about the dial, hands, case, movement and replacements?
- Service exposure: What work is documented, what may be needed, and can you obtain a written estimate?
- Cost and terms: What is the likely all-in amount under that sale’s conditions, and what remedies or inspection rights are actually stated?
- Delivery: Are the materials and route compatible with the shipping and import requirements for your destination?
- Claims: What evidence supports the description of rarity, provenance and estimate for this particular watch?
If a material answer is unavailable, ask the house to clarify it before bidding. If uncertainty remains, account for it in your maximum bid or decide not to bid.
