Before paying a private seller for a Rolex, verify the seller’s account of ownership, inspect the exact watch, compare its identifying details with the documents, ask for service and condition evidence, and get a written receipt that identifies both seller and watch. These checks reduce avoidable risk; they do not prove authenticity or establish clear ownership. Rolex describes authentication as a workshop process, not a do-it-yourself visual test.
Start with the seller and the watch’s history
Ask who owns the watch, how and when they acquired it, and why they are selling. Request the seller’s name and contact details, the watch’s reference and serial information, and any purchase or service records. Ask for clear photos of the exact watch and its documents, and confirm that the seller actually possesses it.

The Watch Register’s 2023 Due Diligence Guidelines recommend asking about ownership history, recording the information provided, and keeping an invoice identifying the seller and watch, including its serial number. Treat the seller’s answers as useful context, not independent proof of ownership. An invoice or serial number does not, by itself, establish lawful title or clear a watch against theft reports.

Agree before meeting that you can examine the watch and documents, and that a material discrepancy or unsatisfactory inspection can end the transaction. Avoid paying a deposit just to reserve a high-value watch before you have evaluated the seller and agreed on the transaction terms.

Inspect the exact watch and compare its details
Examine the watch being offered—not just listing photos—and compare available identifying details with the paperwork. Check that the reference and serial information are consistent across the watch, records and seller’s account. Missing information, mismatched details, evasive answers or refusal to permit reasonable examination are reasons to pause, not problems to explain away.
Look over the dial, case, bracelet, clasp and overall condition. A loupe can help you see detail, but it cannot authenticate a watch. Do not open the case yourself or use an amateur case-opening tool. If authenticity, condition or originality is uncertain, arrange an inspection by a qualified watchmaker and confirm beforehand what the inspection will cover.
Ask the inspector to identify any replaced, non-original, polished or damaged components and explain what those findings mean for condition, serviceability and value. The reviewed official sources do not provide a complete DIY authentication method: Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches are checked in Rolex workshops, including verification of original configuration and inspection of components.

Ask for dated purchase and service invoices, and find out who performed the work. Documents can support the watch’s history, but a box, guarantee card or convincing paperwork is not conclusive proof that the watch is authentic or that the seller has good title.
Rolex’s published new-watch guarantee conditions require that the watch was sold by an Official Rolex Retailer, that the guarantee card was completed by that retailer at the time of purchase, and that the card is presented. Rolex’s FAQ describes a five-year international guarantee for new watches bought from Official Rolex Retailers; that term should not be assumed to apply to every private-sale watch or to remain active automatically. Verify any specific claim with Rolex or an Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre.
Ask the seller to explain any claimed remaining guarantee and provide the relevant documents, then verify the claim through Rolex’s official network rather than relying solely on the seller’s interpretation. A service record is also not a guarantee of present condition; consider an independent inspection if the watch’s condition is uncertain or the purchase is substantial.

Before payment, obtain a dated receipt or invoice showing the seller’s identity, agreed price, exact watch identification and serial number. Keep a copy of the seller’s ownership-history statements, relevant messages, supporting documents and payment record. This creates a record of what was represented and sold; it is not a substitute for authentication or proof of lawful ownership.

Compare a private sale with Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) is a distinct option for buyers who prioritize brand authentication and a defined service and guarantee package. Rolex says the program applies to watches at least two years old and is available only through participating Official Rolex Retailers. Rolex authenticates the watches in its workshops, fully services them and provides a new two-year international guarantee. The program’s seal and guarantee card attest to CPO status; those benefits do not apply to an ordinary private sale.
Rolex’s May 2025 program description says older examples may have exceptions concerning water resistance and original precision. Check the terms and condition of the individual watch with the participating retailer. For private and CPO purchases alike, compare the exact reference, condition, documentation, service evidence and transaction terms. No current price comparison establishes that private sales are generally cheaper or that CPO is overpriced.
Rolex states on its Certified Pre-Owned page that its workshop process checks original configuration and components. In its May 2025 announcement, Rolex says, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” That is Rolex’s statement about its own authentication process; it is not a claim that a private seller’s documents or visual checks can provide the same confirmation.
