A watch that ticks is not necessarily healthy, original, repairable, or water-resistant today.
What to check before you meet the seller
Start by identifying the exact watch—not just the brand and general style. Ask for its model or reference and the claimed year, then compare its case, dial, hands, crown, and movement with reliable information for that specific reference and period. A component may be genuine yet belong to another model; a mixture of correct-looking parts can still affect originality and value.

For example, a Seiko collector guide recommends comparing the caseback model code with the dial code and expected components. That numbering approach is Seiko-specific; do not apply it to other brands. See the guide to checking a vintage Seiko.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchRequest clear photographs of the dial, caseback, crown, clasp, and—if a competent person can provide them safely—the movement and battery area. Do not ask an inexperienced seller to open a case if doing so could damage the watch. Ask whether the dial, hands, crown, movement, crystal, or bracelet have been replaced, and request dated receipts and a description of work claimed as service. Missing vintage paperwork alone does not prove a watch is counterfeit; judge the components and available evidence together. Ask whether it runs and whether each relevant feature works: date, day, alarm, chronograph, or other complications. “Runs” only describes what the watch is doing now; it does not establish that the movement is reliable or repairable.
Inspect the battery compartment and movement
Battery history is a movement-condition issue, not just a maintenance detail. Look for white powder or other residue around the battery, corroded contacts, and rust. Leakage can damage or jam a quartz movement. A new battery in the watch does not show that the movement is in good condition.
Have the battery area inspected by a competent person if it is not safely visible. The American Watchmakers Institute’s 1983 technical article explains that a battery must have suitable size, voltage, and drain for the watch; an incorrect cell can fail to make contact or damage the movement. Treat this as historical technical guidance, not as a current battery cross-reference. Read the AWCI article on quartz battery selection.

Battery-life guidance varies by manufacturer and model. Patek Philippe says a quartz movement’s battery lasts two to three years, while Baume & Mercier gives a general range of three to ten years for its quartz watches, depending on model. These are brand-specific figures, not a universal lifespan for vintage quartz watches. Patek Philippe watch-care guidance and Baume & Mercier’s FAQ explain their respective guidance.
Test the hands, date, and other functions
Check that the hands move smoothly and that the calendar changes as expected. On a calendar watch, advance the hands through midnight and confirm the date rollover. If it has a quickset date, move the hands away from the date-change period before using quickset, as the collector guidance recommends. Stop if the crown or another control feels stuck or needs force; forcing it can cause damage. The Seiko collector guide describes this calendar check.
Test any other complications the watch claims to have, such as day display, alarm, or chronograph. If a function cannot be demonstrated, treat its condition as unverified rather than assuming it works.

Assess service history, repairability, and water resistance
Ask what work was done, when it was done, and which parts were replaced. Dated receipts and a specific list of work are more useful than a general claim that the watch was “serviced.” If the history is unknown, include that uncertainty in your valuation and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified watchmaker—especially when originality, movement condition, or repairability matters to the purchase.

Parts availability can vary by model and country. Baume & Mercier says vintage spare parts may vary in availability and can be out of stock. That is a reason to check for the exact model rather than assume a repair will be straightforward. Its guidance also recommends certified watchmaker battery replacement and checks of movement condition and water resistance. See Baume & Mercier’s service FAQ.
Do not rely on an old water-resistance marking or claim as proof that the watch is safe around water now. Check the model’s documentation and seek current testing or a professional assessment before exposing it to water. Patek Philippe likewise advises owners to consult the relevant user guide to verify water resistance; its recommendation is manufacturer-specific. Consult Patek Philippe’s watch-care guidance.

Check the dial, case, bracelet, and fit
Inspect the dial printing and luminous material under good light; a loupe can reveal details, but magnification cannot authenticate a watch by itself. Look over the case for damage and the bracelet for wear. If bracelet originality matters to you, ask whether it is original to the watch and inspect the clasp. Confirm that enough links are present for the intended wrist size: missing links can limit fit and may be difficult to source.
When to get an independent inspection
Seek a qualified watchmaker or vintage-watch specialist when the seller cannot establish component consistency, the battery area shows residue or corrosion, the movement’s condition is uncertain, or the purchase price makes a hidden repair significant. Photographs, paperwork, a serial number, or a ticking movement do not by themselves settle authenticity, repairability, or current water resistance. An expert’s hands-on assessment can help resolve those questions, but it is not a substitute for evaluating the watch’s actual condition and the evidence available.
