If you miss a film festival screening, contact the festival box office or venue staff immediately. Ask whether late entry is allowed, whether there is a rush or standby line, and whether the film has another screening or an official online showing. A ticket does not automatically guarantee entry after the start time, a refund, or an exchange; the answer depends on the festival, venue, ticket type, and edition.
What to do right away
- If the screening may still be underway, go to the venue entrance or box office. Ask staff whether late ticket holders may enter. Do not interrupt the screening or assume you will be admitted.
- Ask about rush or standby. Find out whether unclaimed seats are being released, whether late ticket holders can join the queue, and whether admission is still possible.
- If you cannot get in, ask about alternatives. Check for another scheduled screening, whether an exchange is still allowed under your ticket terms, and whether the festival offers an official online viewing window.
- Have your order information ready. Keep the ticket confirmation and booking details accessible when speaking to support. For a digital ticket, open it before reaching an entrance with weak mobile reception or save it in the festival’s recommended format.
Can you still get into a movie if you’re late?
There is no universal late-entry rule. Some festivals stop admitting patrons when a screening begins; others allow late entry only if seats remain or staff approve it. The policy may also differ between venues and screening types.

For example, the Festival de Cannes says access is no longer possible once a screening starts and counts the booking as a no-show. Thessaloniki likewise says it does not admit patrons after a screening begins. Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) says patrons not seated by the start time may not be admitted, including at allocated-seat sessions. By contrast, Tribeca permits late entry only if space is available, and the Cleveland International Film Festival leaves late seating to staff discretion.
Check the current rules for your specific screening and follow staff instructions at the venue. For accredited Cannes attendees, two no-shows block ticket reservations for 48 hours; that rule is specific to Cannes accreditation and does not establish a general festival policy. Should you join the rush or standby line?
Ask the box office whether a rush or standby queue is operating and who may use it. Festivals may release seats that are empty or unclaimed, but a place in line is not a guarantee of admission. Depending on the rules, a ticket holder who arrives late may need to join the same queue as other waiting patrons.
Policies vary: Tribeca sells rush or standby tickets for empty seats at screening start; MIFF says standby patrons may be admitted up to 15 minutes after a screening begins, without a guarantee; and the Asian American International Film Festival releases unclaimed seats for rush resale at event start. MIFF also says late tickets may be resold to standby. Cannes reported allocating 15,000 seats through last-minute queues in 2024, a figure specific to that festival and year—not a measure of any individual attendee’s chance of getting in.

Do not assume a missed screening can be refunded or exchanged. Deadlines, fees, and exclusions are set by each festival and may depend on whether the film has started. MIFF’s 2026 ticket FAQ states: “There are no exchanges or refunds available if patrons arrive late to a session.” MIFF separately allows standard in-cinema tickets to be exchanged up to two hours before the start, subject to exclusions and possible fees for some bookings.

Cannes takes a different approach before the screening: its FAQ says a ticket must be returned or cancelled at least one hour beforehand if the attendee cannot go; the FAQ says this does not apply to journalists. Thessaloniki lists an advance refund cutoff of the day before for certain €5 tickets, while online screenings cannot be exchanged, returned, or cancelled. These are examples of distinct festival rules, not general entitlements.

What if the film has another screening or is online?
Look up the film in the festival’s official program and ask the box office whether another session is scheduled. Check the listing and ticket terms for an official online version, too. Availability and viewing periods vary by title, festival, ticket, and edition; an online option is not automatic, and another showing does not mean your original ticket can be transferred.
For example, the Geneva International Film Festival describes online availability for certain series episodes, with a 96-hour viewing window after the series starts online. Thessaloniki says online viewing availability and time limits depend on the ticket and screening. Confirm the specific title’s dates and terms through the festival rather than relying on a general schedule. Geneva International Film Festival FAQ; Thessaloniki Film Festival ticket information.

How to avoid losing access to your ticket
- Save the confirmation and order details somewhere easy to retrieve.
- If the ticket is digital, open it before you arrive at the venue. Cannes says e-tickets can be shown on a smartphone and recommends downloading to Wallet when poor connectivity could prevent account access. MIFF accepts tickets on a phone, in its app, as a PDF, or printed.
- Use only official festival or venue channels for ticket questions. Do not resell or buy through unofficial sources unless the festival confirms transfers are permitted. Cannes says its free tickets may not be sold and warns against third-party ticket purchases.
