Treat paperwork as useful provenance—not proof that every component is original or that the watch is currently working correctly. Identify the exact reference before comparing watches
A. Lange & Söhne makes chronographs in different families and configurations. Specifications for one reference should not be applied to another. Confirm the reference, generation, case metal, dial, and any additional complication against manufacturer records before assessing condition or price.

Reference 401.026: one specific 1815 Chronograph
The manufacturer’s archived page identifies reference 401.026 as a white-gold 1815 Chronograph that is no longer in the current collection. Lange lists a 39.5 mm diameter, 10.9 mm height, manual winding, calibre L951.0, 320 movement parts, a 36-hour power reserve, a 2.5 Hz balance frequency, chronograph function, sapphire caseback, and 3-bar water resistance. A Sotheby’s catalogue describes a 401.026 example as a first-generation reference, noting distinctive “m”-shaped hash marks on the minute track and a pulsometer scale. It says the reference was introduced in 2004 with calibre L951.0. Treat those details as catalogue context for identification, not a replacement for confirming the particular watch with the manufacturer. Sotheby’s catalogue entry.

Check provenance, documents, and seller protection
Ask for the watch’s “History of Your Watch” booklet, guarantee seal or card, dated invoices, and any records of ownership changes or maintenance. Compare the case number on the caseback and the movement number visible through the sapphire back—or recorded in the guarantee documents—with the paperwork. Lange describes the booklet as a place to record maintenance and ownership changes. Consistent records help trace a watch’s history, but they do not by themselves prove that every component currently fitted is original.
For watches manufactured after 1990, Lange offers fee-based proof of origin when the watch is presented at a boutique. Read the seller’s terms before paying. Record the seller’s identity, return window, transaction protections, and any written warranty, and establish who pays for inspection or shipping if a problem is found. Lange’s standard guarantee runs for two years from purchase and covers material and manufacturing defects; a boutique buyer who registers may receive an additional year from the boutique operator. Lange also says service or repair carries a further 24-month guarantee on parts affected by that work. Lange recommends an overhaul every five to seven years. It says an overhaul involves dismantling and cleaning the movement and replacing lubricants, seals, and wearing parts as required. Damage from an external event, such as impact or water ingress, is treated as a repair instead. Lange says only its service center or a small number of authorized service partners may repair or overhaul its watches and order repair parts; it warns that improper opening can seriously damage the movement. If service history is missing or unclear, discuss the watch with Lange or an authorized service partner before purchase. Do not ask an unqualified seller or buyer to open it.
The manufacturer gives typical service timing of around twelve weeks plus shipping, or around fifteen weeks plus transport for complex models. It cautions that processing can take longer under current circumstances. Those are estimates, not a promise for a particular watch, repair, or service center. Factor potential waiting time and shipping into your plans as well as the price.

Arrange an inspection of condition and chronograph operation
Request clear, recent images of the dial, case, caseback, movement, clasp or buckle, and any marks or damage. When practical, arrange an in-person inspection or have an independent qualified watchmaker assess the watch before the sale becomes final.

- Movement and timekeeping: Ask the watchmaker to assess winding, operation, and timekeeping; a brief visual inspection cannot establish mechanical health.
- Chronograph: Check start, stop, and reset, including whether the hands align correctly. If the model has flyback or split-seconds functions, have those assessed too.
- Condition and originality: Look for case wear, signs of polishing or restoration, dial and hand condition, and evidence of moisture or prior intervention. Ask the specialist to note any replaced or non-original components they can identify.
- Water resistance: If splash resistance matters to you, request a recent pressure test. Do not infer current water resistance from the model’s original specification.
Auction terms make the limits of a catalogue description clear. In its cited lot, Sotheby’s said the movement had not been tested for timekeeping accuracy and might need service at the buyer’s expense. It also disclaimed future operation and authenticity of individual components where later repair or restoration may have replaced them, noted that a condition report might omit mechanical replacements or imperfections, and did not warrant water resistance. Lange says its watches are checked at 3 bar before delivery and cautions against swimming and sauna use. That factory check does not establish the present condition of an older pre-owned watch’s seals. Follow the specific model’s instructions and request a current pressure test if relevant. Compare the complete cost, not just the asking price
There is no single defensible price benchmark for all pre-owned Lange chronographs: reference, configuration, condition, provenance, and service needs differ. Compare live examples of the same reference and similar condition, and account for inspection, travel, shipping, and likely service exposure. Lange says market value depends on numerous factors and recommends an auction house experienced in precision mechanical watches for an assessment. - Exact reference, generation, metal, dial, and configuration
- Seller identity, return terms, transaction protections, and written warranty
- Ownership records, serial consistency, original documents, and whether proof of origin is appropriate
- Service dates, provider, documented work, replaced parts, and likely time and cost exposure
- Case and dial condition, possible polishing, component originality, and movement health
- Chronograph operation and any additional complication
- Price against current like-for-like examples, plus inspection, travel, shipping, and service costs
Care for the watch after purchase
Lange advises avoiding shocks, strong magnetic fields, and abrupt temperature changes, and recommends cleaning with the supplied microfiber cloth. It also cautions against swimming and sauna use.
