On many standard two-pusher models, press the upper pusher to start and stop timing, then press the lower pusher to reset after the chronograph has stopped. The exact controls and safe sequence vary by movement, so use your watch’s manual as the authority. There is no established universal rule that leaving an idle mechanical chronograph running will damage it.
How to start, stop and reset a typical two-pusher chronograph
- Check the manual and crown position. Identify the controls and confirm the crown is in the position specified for operating the chronograph on your model.
- Start timing. On many standard two-pusher chronographs, the upper pusher—often near 2 o’clock—starts the measurement.
- Read elapsed time. The central stop-seconds hand commonly shows elapsed seconds. If the dial has minute or hour counters, use those to read longer intervals. Layouts differ, so check the dial and manual rather than assuming every subdial has the same function.
- Stop timing. Press the upper pusher again on models that use it to stop the measurement.
- Reset only after stopping. On many such models, the lower pusher—often near 4 o’clock—returns the chronograph hands to zero. Do not press reset while timing unless the manual for your exact movement expressly permits it.
Hamilton describes this as the common two-pusher operation, and Georg Jensen documents it for its specified automatic models. Pusher positions and functions are not universal. Hamilton’s chronograph guide and the instructions supplied with your watch can help identify the correct sequence.

How to time more than one interval
Accumulated timing
Some chronographs let you stop and restart timing so separate intervals are added to one cumulative elapsed-time reading. Georg Jensen documents this operation for named automatic models, and TAG Heuer’s TH20 instructions describe cumulative timing with button A for start and stop and button B for reset after timing is complete. Follow the sequence for your caliber; do not assume every watch handles a stopped interval the same way.

Flyback, interval and monopusher functions
Flyback and interval timing can involve operations that differ from the ordinary start-stop-reset sequence. A monopusher may combine controls that a two-pusher watch keeps separate. Consult the exact manual before using these functions; a familiar pusher position or a sequence that works on another chronograph is not enough to establish what yours will do.

Does leaving the chronograph running cause extra wear?
A mechanical movement has moving parts, and TAG Heuer notes that servicing addresses wear and oils over time. However, the manufacturer materials cited here do not quantify the additional wear from leaving a chronograph engaged, and they do not establish that an idle running chronograph will damage every mechanical watch. Nor is there evidence here that stopping it materially extends the life of every movement.
When you have finished measuring an interval, stop the chronograph as part of ordinary operation. Treat that as a practical habit, not a universal damage-prevention rule. The watch’s specific caliber and manufacturer guidance determine what is appropriate.

Also distinguish the watch running from the chronograph running. The watch’s timekeeping continues during normal operation; the chronograph is the additional elapsed-time function controlled by its pushers. Automatic and hand-wound movements differ in how they receive power, so follow the instructions for your watch rather than generalizing from one mechanism.
What to do if the chronograph will not reset or a pusher feels wrong
- If a hand does not return precisely to zero, consult the model manual or a qualified watchmaker. Zero adjustment procedures are not universal.
- If a pusher does not operate normally, do not force it or keep experimenting. Stop and seek model-specific guidance or qualified service.
- If the watch has a special timing function, confirm the correct reset sequence before operating it.
Care and service advice is manufacturer-specific
TAG Heuer says the service interval depends on the watch and the wearer’s habits, environment and activity. Its care guidance recommends a full overhaul approximately every five to six years. For its watches worn in water, it recommends a water-resistance test every two years. These are TAG Heuer recommendations, not a universal schedule for every brand or caliber. Check your manufacturer’s guidance, particularly if you wear the watch in water. TAG Heuer’s watch-care guidance provides the scope of those recommendations.

TAG Heuer also advises following the individual model manual for winding turns and recommends winding a stored watch approximately once a month to help preserve lubrication. That is advice from TAG Heuer, not a requirement established here for every mechanical watch. Its watch-use recommendations explain the manufacturer’s position.
