If a mechanical chronograph is losing time, the cause is usually a factor affecting the watch movement—such as winding, magnetism, temperature, position, impact or wear—not the chronograph function by itself. Check the watch against its own stated accuracy range over several days, keep winding and wear consistent, and seek a watchmaker’s assessment if the loss persists or began after a strong impact. There is no single acceptable daily rate or service interval for every mechanical chronograph.
First, separate the chronograph function from timekeeping accuracy
A chronograph measures elapsed intervals; it is an added function, not a diagnosis for why the watch’s ordinary time display is slow. Longines defines it as “A timekeeping instrument comprising a time counter for measuring and displaying intervals of time independently of the timekeeping and the time display.” A chronometer is different: the term refers to a high-precision timepiece certified under applicable criteria. Official manufacturer guidance does not establish that running a chronograph universally makes the ordinary time display lose time. If you suspect a connection, compare the rate with the chronograph off and on under otherwise similar conditions, and share the observation with a watchmaker. That comparison can help diagnosis, but does not prove the complication is faulty. Why a mechanical chronograph may run slow
Insufficient or inconsistent winding
A mechanical watch depends on energy stored in its mainspring. If it is under-wound, its rate may be less stable or more affected by other conditions. An automatic watch worn for little time—or worn without much wrist movement—may not receive enough winding from normal activity. Follow the winding procedure for the specific watch. Seiko recommends winding its mechanical watches daily at a fixed time, while the instructions for other calibers may differ. Magnetism
Exposure to a magnet can affect a mechanical watch’s rate. Seiko explains that a magnetized hairspring may make the balance’s oscillation unstable, causing the watch to gain or lose time. The direction of the error is not a reliable way to confirm magnetism. Keep the watch away from magnetic accessories and devices; if exposure is plausible, Seiko recommends contacting an authorized service center for assessment and demagnetization rather than treating the watch at home. Temperature and resting position
Temperature and gravity can influence a mechanical movement’s rate. Seiko says high temperatures normally tend to make its mechanical watches lose time, while low temperatures tend to make them gain. It also describes rate differences that arise from the position in which a watch rests. These are possible influences, not proof of a fault in a particular watch. Shock or physical damage
A strong impact can affect delicate movement components. If the watch began losing time substantially after being dropped or struck, arrange a professional assessment instead of trying to regulate it based on the symptom alone. Over time, lubricants can deteriorate and friction can increase. Longines identifies movement condition and regular service as relevant to timekeeping. Persistent loss despite consistent winding, a sudden large change, or unreliable function after an impact warrants professional diagnosis. How much time loss is acceptable?
Use the accuracy range stated for the individual watch, with its specified test conditions, as the reference. Brand figures illustrate why a universal limit is misleading: Bremont says its timepieces are regulated to −4 to +6 seconds per day when leaving the workshop under ISO 3159 certification parameters, while Longines presents ±10 seconds per day as a possible deviation for a standard mechanical automatic watch. A single day may not represent the watch’s usual performance. Grand Seiko recommends assessing the mean daily rate over a week to ten days, and its acceptable target varies by caliber. Grand Seiko mechanical accuracy guidance.

Check the rate safely at home
- Set a reliable baseline. Synchronize the watch to a reliable time reference and record the starting time.
- Keep use consistent. Wind and wear the watch as its own manual instructs. Note whether the chronograph is running and how long you use it.
- Record daily differences. Compare the displayed time after several days and record how far it gains or loses each day. Use a week to ten days to judge the mean rate, following Grand Seiko’s guidance, rather than relying on one day alone. Grand Seiko mechanical accuracy guidance.
- Note likely influences. Record unusual magnetic exposure, temperature extremes, changes in wearing or resting position, and any impact. If magnetism is plausible, contact the manufacturer’s authorized service channel. Seiko care guidance.
- Share the record with a professional if the problem continues. Include the daily rate, winding routine, chronograph use, and any known exposure or impact. This gives the watchmaker useful context without assuming a cause.
When to arrange professional service
Contact the manufacturer’s authorized service channel or a qualified watchmaker if the watch continues to lose time despite consistent winding, loses substantially more than its model’s stated tolerance, stops, or changes markedly after an impact. Service recommendations depend on the brand and watch. Seiko recommends examination, cleaning and oiling of parts where needed every three years. Longines recommends a full service every six to eight years for its regularly wound mechanical watches. Follow the current recommendation for your specific model rather than treating either interval as universal. Seiko service interval; Longines service intervals.
