A neat, comfortable outfit is a sensible starting point for jury duty, but there is no universal dress code. Check the instructions on your summons and your court’s jury-service page before you go; if the rules are unclear, contact the jury office. A plain shirt or blouse with comfortable trousers and a light layer works in many settings, but local requirements take priority.
How formal should you dress for jury duty?
It depends on the court. Some official guidance permits casual clothing, while other courts recommend business attire or list specific items jurors should not wear. Treat the summons and the court’s own guidance as the rule for your location—not examples from another court.

For instance, the UK Ministry of Justice says there is “no strict dress code” for jury service and gives jeans and a T-shirt as examples of comfortable clothing. That guidance applies to its UK jury-service context, not automatically to courts in the United States or elsewhere: UK Ministry of Justice jury-service guidance.

What to wear: practical outfit ideas
Casual, where the court allows it
Clean, intact jeans and a plain, modest top can be appropriate where local instructions permit casual clothing. The UK Ministry of Justice specifically names jeans and a T-shirt as an example; check your own court’s rules before relying on that example.
Business casual
Comfortable trousers or a modest skirt with a plain shirt, blouse, or sweater is a practical choice for courts that recommend business attire, as well as for jurors who want a neat, understated outfit. This is a suggestion, not a standard mandated combination.

Bring a layer
A cardigan, sweater, or jacket over your base outfit can help if the courtroom is cold. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia and the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California both recommend bringing a warm layer: Northern District of Georgia clothing guidance and Central District of California dress code.
Choose footwear for the day
Pick shoes you can comfortably walk in and sit in for an extended period. Courts do not establish one universally correct shoe style, but some specifically discourage or prohibit flip-flops or beach shoes. Follow the rule for your courthouse.

What clothing may be restricted?
Restrictions differ by court, so do not assume that every example below applies everywhere. Official guidance from individual courts identifies items such as beachwear, shorts, tank tops, flip-flops, bare midriffs, and certain hats. Some courts make exceptions for religious headwear.
- The Northern District of Georgia discourages tank tops, halters, and flip-flops.
- The Central District of California lists shorts, mini-skirts, tank tops, flip-flops, and hats among clothing jurors should not wear, with an exception for religious purposes.
- Riverside County Superior Court prohibits tank tops, shorts, bare midriffs, strapless dresses, flip-flops, and bare feet in the courtroom.
- The UK Ministry of Justice identifies beachwear and headwear other than for religious reasons as unsuitable in its jury-service guidance.

Consequences depend on the court. The Central District of California says a juror dressed inappropriately may be sent home and ordered to return on a future date. Separately, HM Courts & Tribunals Service guidance for court and tribunal visitors—not jury-specific guidance—says staff may refuse entry for inappropriate attire. Its general visitor page was last updated on 22 April 2026: HM Courts & Tribunals Service visitor guidance.
