There is no single official list of braid types: many popular looks are variations in parting, braid size, length, extensions, or how the finished braids are styled. This guide groups 60 ideas by how they sit and look, so you can compare scalp-braided styles, individual plaits, hybrid looks, and classic woven braids. Some names—especially culturally specific styles—refer to traditions as well as appearance, not just a trend or a parting pattern.
Scalp-braided looks: cornrows and close-to-the-head patterns
Cornrows are braided close to the scalp. The first choices are the direction and pattern, then whether to gather the finished braids into a particular shape. These descriptions identify visual variations; they are not a universal naming standard.

- Straight-back cornrows: Rows run from the hairline toward the back of the head for a direct, orderly pattern.
- Side-part cornrows: A side part shifts the visual balance and gives the rows an asymmetrical starting point.
- Center-part cornrows: A central part creates a more even, mirrored layout.
- Curved cornrow pattern: The rows follow curved paths instead of running straight back.
- Zigzag-part cornrows: The parting traces a zigzag line, making the divisions part of the finished design.
- Stitch cornrows: A named cornrow variation recognized for its defined, segmented-looking rows; the exact execution can vary by stylist.
- Feed-in cornrows: A cornrow look in which added hair is incorporated along the braid, rather than being treated as a required feature of every cornrow style.
- Cornrow crown: Cornrows are arranged to frame the head in a crown-like pattern.
- Cornrow updo: The scalp braids are arranged into an updo rather than left as hanging lengths.
- Cornrow ponytail: Cornrows lead into a gathered ponytail silhouette.
- Cornrows gathered into a bun: The braided lengths are collected into a bun for a compact finish.
- Cornrows with geometric parting: Sections form angular or other geometric shapes, making the parting pattern the focal point.
Individual plaits: box braids and styling variations
Box braids are individual plaits made from hair divided into sections, often box-shaped. Extensions may be added, but accessories such as beads are optional. The looks below combine variations in technique, section size, length, finish, and styling. For a visual overview of box-braid variations, see Allure’s box-braid style gallery.

- Knotless box braids: The braid starts with natural hair before extension hair is added, avoiding the initial extension knot used in the knot technique.
- Jumbo box braids: Larger individual braids create a bold, substantial look.
- Medium box braids: A middle-ground braid size between jumbo and small options.
- Small box braids: Narrow individual plaits create a finer, more numerous pattern.
- Short box braids: Box braids cut or styled to a shorter overall length.
- Long box braids: The same individual-plait approach worn at a longer length.
- Bob-length box braids: Box braids shaped to a bob silhouette.
- Triangle-part box braids: The individual sections use triangular rather than box-shaped parting.
- Box braids with beads: Beads are added as optional accessories to selected braid ends or lengths.
- Box braids with braided bangs: Some braids are brought forward to form a bang-like frame.
- Half-up box braids: Part of the braids is gathered up while the rest remains loose.
- Box-braid high ponytail: The braids are gathered high for a lifted ponytail shape.
- Box-braid bun: The braids are coiled or arranged into a bun.
- Side-swept box braids: The braids are directed over one shoulder for an off-center finish.
- Box braids in a crown updo: The lengths are arranged around the head in a crown-like updo.
- Box braids with curly ends: The braid lengths finish with loose curls rather than a fully braided tip.
- Boho box braids: Curly pieces are mixed into the braided lengths for a braid-and-curl texture.
- Goddess braids: In this guide, the name refers to a curly-piece variation of box braids; salon usage of style names can differ.
- French curl braids: A braid style with a curled finish and a soft, bouncy appearance. Hairstylist Chinyere “Chi-Chi” Adogu describes the look as having “the silky, bouncy look of the braids” and being “lightweight.” Allure’s feature on French curl braids gives further context.
- French curl braids in a bob silhouette: French curl braids are shaped to a shorter bob outline.
- French curl braids with a side part: The curled braid look is arranged around an off-center part.
- Box braids with colored extensions: Added hair in a chosen color changes the overall palette; extensions are a styling option, not a requirement for braids generally.
- Box braids with a center part: The individual sections are arranged around a central part for a balanced frame.
Hybrid and culturally specific braid looks
Hybrid styles combine scalp braids with individual plaits, twists, or loose curly pieces. Fulani braids are associated with the Fulani (Fula) people of West Africa; the style is described as a cornrow base that transitions into box braids or twists. That cultural context matters when using the name. Allure’s Fulani-braid feature discusses the construction and naming; its cultural-history feature on protective styles provides broader context on cornrows, Fulani braids, and Bantu knots.

- Fulani-inspired flip-over hybrid: A contemporary hybrid borrows visual cues associated with Fulani braids. Use “inspired” carefully; resemblance alone does not establish cultural origin.
- Cornrow-and-box-braid hybrid: Cornrows at the scalp transition into individual box braids.
- Cornrows with loose curly pieces: Curly pieces are left loose among or alongside the scalp braids.
- Koroba braids: A described version has cornrow ends wrapped into pinwheel shapes. Because the label and execution may vary, confirm the name and design with a knowledgeable braider.
- Bantu knots with braided hair: Braided lengths are arranged into Bantu knots. This is a braid-based styling variation, not a conventional plait type.
Twists and braid-adjacent arrangements
These options are included because they may be considered alongside braids, but a twist is not the same construction as a braid. Flat twists are two-strand twists.
- Flat twists: Two-strand twists are formed close to the scalp; this is a twist style, not a braid.
- Flat twists leading into a braid: The close-to-scalp section transitions into a braided length.
- Braids arranged into Bantu knots: Braided lengths are coiled into knots, combining a braided base with a knot-shaped finish.
- Braided crown with loose lengths: A crown-like braid frames the head while lengths remain loose.
Loose plaits and classic woven looks
These styles use visible, woven lengths rather than a full pattern of individual extensions or cornrows. The familiar names are useful starting points; a stylist can confirm the precise technique and finish desired.

- Natural hair or extensions: Extensions are used in some box-braid and feed-in looks, but are not a requirement for every braid. Curly pieces and beads are optional details for particular variations.
- Size, length, and weight: Jumbo, small, short, and long describe different visual choices. Consider the overall load and how it feels at the scalp rather than assuming one size suits everyone.
- Parting and styling: Center or side parts, geometric sections, and updos change the silhouette without making each variation a separate canonical braid type.
- Scalp access: Consider whether you can reach your scalp to cleanse it and keep up with care while the style is installed.
Tension, washing, and scalp care
A style described as protective can still stress hair roots if it pulls tightly or repeatedly. Knotless braids begin with natural hair before extension hair is added, which may reduce the tight grip at the start compared with the knot technique; that does not make any braid risk-free. If a style is painful or pulls at the hairline, ask for it to be loosened or removed rather than treating discomfort as necessary. The 2025 Allure article quotes board-certified dermatologist Whitney Tolpinrud, MD: “First-line treatment of traction alopecia is avoidance of traction-causing hairstyles.” It also advises readers who notice thinning edges to consult a dermatologist. See the article on traction and protective styling.

Keep washing and scalp care in the routine while braids are installed; a protective-style label is not a reason to ignore the scalp. In a 2026 washing guide, board-certified dermatologist Zoë Indigo, MD, says: “When done correctly, braids are an effective protective style that supports moisture retention and overall hair health.” Allure’s braid-washing guide addresses care during wear. The appropriate routine depends on the style and your scalp; the cited guidance does not establish a single schedule for every braid or wearer.
