Your invoice may also include the buyer’s premium, applicable taxes, and delivery costs; imports can add customs duties or clearance fees. The total depends on the auction house, sale location, lot, destination, and how you collect or ship the watch. What the main auction charges mean
Hammer price
The hammer price is the winning bid. It is the starting point for calculating the buyer’s invoice, not necessarily the full amount due. Phillips, for example, defines the purchase price as hammer price plus buyer’s premium and applicable taxes and charges (Phillips’ Geneva guide for prospective buyers).

Buyer’s premium
The buyer’s premium is an auction-house fee charged to the successful bidder on top of the hammer price. It appears on the buyer’s invoice. Auction houses may use tiered rates, with different marginal rates applying to different portions of the hammer price, and schedules can vary by sale location. Christie’s explains that its premium is calculated as a percentage of the winning bid and may use tiers (Christie’s guide to auction fees); Sotheby’s says its premium is added to the hammer price and varies by location and tier (Sotheby’s buyer’s-premium guidance).

| Schedule example | Published rates | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Phillips New York | 27% on the hammer price up to and including $1,000,000; 21% on the portion above $1,000,000 through $6,000,000; 14.5% on the portion above $6,000,000 | Rates are calculated cumulatively. Phillips announced this structure on 10 April 2026; it applies to auctions on or after 12 April 2026. Its Fall 2026 listing shows these rates. See the Phillips announcement and Fall 2026 auction listing. |
| Sotheby’s New York, UAE, and Saudi Arabia schedule | 28% up to and including $2,000,000; 22% on the portion between $2,000,000 and $8,000,000; 15% on the portion above $8,000,000 | These are Sotheby’s published examples for the named markets. Other markets have different thresholds and currencies; check the current schedule for the sale. See Sotheby’s buyer’s-premium guidance. |
For a tiered schedule, apply each rate only to the portion in its band. For example, using the Phillips New York schedule above, a $1,200,000 hammer price would incur 27% on the first $1,000,000 and 21% on the remaining $200,000—not 21% on the entire hammer price. The premium would be $312,000 before any taxes or other charges. Always verify that the schedule and currency apply to your sale.
Taxes and duties
Tax treatment can depend on the market where the sale takes place, the lot’s tax status, the buyer’s destination, and whether the watch is collected or shipped. A tax may be calculated on the hammer price, the premium, or other charges, depending on the applicable rules. Sotheby’s market guidance describes, among other cases, local VAT on the buyer’s premium and overhead premium in some European and UK scenarios, possible VAT based on lot status, US sales tax tied to the final delivery address, and local taxes on imports. It also lists local GST on hammer, premium, and overhead premium for some markets. These are examples from the house’s guidance, not universal tax rules (Sotheby’s tax guidance, updated 9 September 2026).
A location-specific Phillips example shows why sale documents matter: its Geneva buyer guide lists 8.1% VAT on the hammer price and buyer’s premium. It says a buyer domiciled outside Switzerland may obtain a refund only if Phillips receives the relevant export declaration stamped by Swiss customs. Do not count on a refund without confirming the current sale terms, eligibility, and documentation requirements (Phillips’ Geneva guide for prospective buyers).

For Christie’s, when it arranges shipping, sales tax is determined by the final destination address. For international shipments, applicable duties and taxes are set by the local government and paid directly to customs. Christie’s New York guidance also describes sales tax due before release when the buyer uses their own agent or shipper (Christie’s payment and shipping guidance).
Shipping, insurance, and delivery-related charges
Shipping is not automatically included in the hammer price. Depending on the auction house and delivery arrangement, the buyer may need to pay for packing, transport, transit insurance, collection or storage, customs clearance, and destination taxes. Sotheby’s global buyer guide identifies shipping, transit insurance, import taxes, customs duties, and local clearance fees among possible amounts due (Sotheby’s global buyer guide).
Christie’s allows buyers to use approved shippers or their own carrier and notes that a bespoke quote may be needed because objects vary in size, shape, and material (Christie’s payment and shipping guidance). The guidance does not establish one universal price or delivery timeline for watches. Ask for a quote using the actual lot, service, and final address, and confirm what is covered.

How to estimate your all-in cost before bidding
- Set a hammer-price limit. Review the lot estimate and decide the highest winning bid that fits your budget. The estimate is not a promise of the final price.
- Find the current premium schedule. Use the schedule for the precise sale and location. If it is tiered, calculate the fee band by band; do not apply one marginal rate to the whole hammer price.
- Check the lot’s tax status. Read its symbols and sale conditions, then use the auction house’s guidance for the sale location, your destination, and your collection or delivery method. Ask the house if the lot’s status or taxable base is unclear.
- Get a delivery quote. Request a quote to your final address and check whether packing, shipping, insurance, storage or collection, and customs clearance are included.
- Allow for import costs. If the watch crosses a border, check whether duties, taxes, or clearance fees may be collected separately by customs or a service provider.
- Set your maximum bid from the total. Add the premium, estimated applicable taxes, quoted delivery costs, and likely import charges to the hammer price. Reduce your bid ceiling if that total exceeds your budget.
A useful planning identity is: estimated total = hammer price + buyer’s premium + applicable taxes or royalties + shipping and insurance + applicable import, customs, or clearance charges. This is a budgeting framework, not a tax calculation. Sotheby’s says it cannot provide tax advice and recommends seeking independent advice where needed (Sotheby’s tax guidance).

What to compare between watch lots or auction houses
Compare the likely invoice and delivery costs, not just estimates or hammer prices. Use these checks before deciding which lot fits your budget:
- The buyer’s-premium rate, tier thresholds, and applicable currency.
- Local tax rules and the amounts on which tax is calculated.
- The lot’s VAT or other tax status and any conditions for a refund.
- The shipping and insurance quote for your actual destination.
- Potential import duties, customs charges, and clearance fees.
- Payment, collection, and release conditions, including any tax due before release.
Seller’s commission is a separate seller-side charge; it is not part of the buyer’s total unless a specific agreement makes it relevant (Christie’s guide to auction fees).
