The watch identified in Joe Penna’s survival film Arctic is the Seiko Sportura Solar Chronograph Perpetual, reference SSC357. That identification comes from watch writer Ariel Adams’s 2019 account, rather than a manufacturer or film-production record, so it is best treated as a specialist’s identification of the on-screen watch—not an officially confirmed prop credit.
Which Seiko watch appears in Arctic?
In his February 7, 2019 article, Ariel Adams identifies the watch worn by Mads Mikkelsen’s character, Overgård, as the Seiko Sportura Solar Chronograph Perpetual SSC357. Adams describes the reference as discontinued at the time of writing. The exact-model identification has not been independently confirmed here by Seiko or the film’s production team. Read Adams’s identification and discussion at aBlogtoWatch.
How does the watch fit the character’s survival routine?
Adams notes that the watch’s alarm is heard repeatedly and interprets it as a way for Overgård to organize tasks while trying to survive. He also points out that the watch is worn outside the parka sleeve, where it would be easier to see and operate over cold-weather layers. Those are observations and interpretations of the film, not confirmed statements of the filmmakers’ intent.
What is known about the SSC357’s functions and price?
Solar charging, alarm and chronograph
Adams describes the SSC357 as solar-powered and discusses its alarm and chronograph functions. The available evidence does not establish a complete specification sheet for this exact reference, so specifications published for other Seiko watches should not be assumed to apply to the SSC357.

Historical price, not a current valuation
Adams reported a US retail price of $575 and estimated a street price of about $450 in his 2019 article. Those figures describe the model’s reported pricing at that time; they do not establish a current resale value or the price of any watch now offered for sale.
Is the film watch the same as Seiko’s Coutura SSC700?
No. Seiko USA’s Coutura SSC700 is a separate solar alarm chronograph and must not be confused with the Sportura SSC357 identified in Arctic. The official product page gives specifications for SSC700 only. It can provide a clearly labeled point of comparison, but there is no evidence that the two references are equivalent.

Can you buy the exact watch today?
Adams characterized the SSC357 as discontinued in 2019, and no current exact-model listing, resale price, or seller status is established here. If you search for a Seiko Sportura SSC357 or Sportura Solar Chronograph Perpetual, verify that the listing names the correct reference and check the seller, condition, photographs, and authenticity documentation before buying. A listing for the Coutura SSC700 is for a different watch, not the film model.

The commercial arrangement is unresolved. Adams wrote that he did not believe Seiko was involved in the placement, but that is his opinion, not primary confirmation. There is no basis here to describe the appearance as either a verified sponsorship or a confirmed organic placement.
