Separate computer-vision and AI-based systems tracked motion and positioning in figure skating and Big Air to create additional visualizations—not to make judging decisions, according to OMEGA’s account.
What changed in Olympic timekeeping in 2026?
The clearest new element was the use of Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE at the Olympic Winter Games for the first time. OMEGA describes it as a photofinish camera, with a stated capture rate of 40,000 images per second. That is a finish-line imaging system; it should not be confused with the computer-vision systems used to visualize athlete movement in other sports.
OMEGA was the Official Timekeeper and says its systems covered 116 events across eight sports. Its post-Games recap reports more than 1,200,000 measured results, including times, scores, ranks, distances and statistics. These totals, like the equipment and staffing figures below, are figures reported by OMEGA rather than independently audited measurements in the cited account. OMEGA’s Milano Cortina 2026 recap
What did each timing technology do?
| System | Role described for the Games |
|---|---|
| Scan’O’Vision ULTIMATE photofinish camera | Captured images at race finish lines; OMEGA states a capacity of 40,000 images per second. |
| Electronic starting pistol | Provided the start signal. |
| Starting gates | Supported event starts and their timing operation. |
| Photoelectric cells | Detected event timing points, including elapsed-time measurement. |
| Computer-vision motion and positioning systems | Provided movement and positioning information for stroboscopic replays and augmented data graphics in figure skating and Big Air. |
The official recap names these components but does not give a sport-by-sport equipment inventory or comparative figures for accuracy, latency or cost. OMEGA’s recap

Did AI judge figure skating or Big Air?
No such role is established in OMEGA’s description. It says computer vision and AI-based motion and positioning systems supplied additional insight and supported stroboscopic replays and augmented data graphics for media storytelling. The account does not say that AI assigned scores, made judging decisions or replaced officials, nor does it explain how the graphics related to judges’ scoring.
Why does timing involve more than clocks and cameras?
At a multi-venue Games, the equipment must be part of a system that gets timing and results information where it is needed. The Milano Cortina 2026 Organizing Committee’s June 2024 Spectrum Availability Plan identifies OMEGA as the official Timing and Scoring Partner and says timing and results applications would receive priority in frequency allocation. That plan illustrates the communications side of event timekeeping; it describes planned spectrum allocation, not a performance result. Milano Cortina 2026 Spectrum Availability Plan

How large was the timekeeping operation?
OMEGA reported 300 timekeepers and 130 tonnes of equipment for the Games. It also reported measuring more than 1,200,000 results across 116 events in eight sports. OMEGA’s recap says the Games produced seven Olympic records and one world record; those are the company’s reported figures. OMEGA’s post-Games account

OMEGA calls this the camera’s first use at the Olympic Winter Games. That wording does not establish that the camera technology debuted in 2026 or that it had never been used elsewhere. The available official account also does not publish an independent accuracy benchmark or the sensor specifications of the motion-tracking systems, so neither should be inferred from the stated image rate.

In short, the documented change was a new-to-the-Winter-Games photofinish camera alongside existing start and timing equipment, with separate motion-visualization systems in figure skating and Big Air. These tools added ways to capture and present event information; the official description does not support claims that AI replaced human judging.
