Apple announced AirPods 5 on September 9, 2026, with store availability beginning September 18. The separate camera-equipped AirPods discussed in reporting are targeted for late 2027 at the earliest, according to Bloomberg News; Apple has not confirmed that product or its timing. So if you mean any new AirPods, AirPods 5 is already announced; if you mean the rumored camera model, late 2027 is an unconfirmed target.
What is the next rumored AirPods release?
The main future AirPods rumor concerns earbuds with cameras intended to provide environmental context for Siri’s Visual Intelligence features, rather than to take ordinary photos or videos. MacRumors described this as reported development information, not final specifications, and reported two variants under consideration: a modified AirPods Pro 3 version and a new-generation AirPods Pro version.
Bloomberg News reported in June 2026 that camera-equipped AirPods were planned for late 2027, citing people familiar with Apple’s plans. A later MacRumors report in August 2026 said the camera model was not on Apple’s 2026 release schedule while Apple worked through software and supply-chain challenges. This history of schedule changes is a reason to treat late 2027 as a reported target and earliest current expectation, not a promise.
What is confirmed, and what is still a rumor?
| Product | Status | What is known | Timing or price |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods 5 | Confirmed by Apple | Announced in two configurations | Available in stores from September 18, 2026; U.S. prices announced at $129 and $149 |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Confirmed by Apple | Apple introduced this in-ear model in 2025 | Announced September 9, 2025 |
| AirPods Max 2 | Confirmed by Apple | Over-ear headphones | Listed in Apple’s newsroom archive as announced March 16, 2026 |
| Camera-equipped AirPods | Reported, unconfirmed | Cameras reportedly intended to support Siri-related environmental context; specifications are not final | Bloomberg reported a late-2027 target; no Apple-confirmed date or price |
Apple has not confirmed the camera-equipped model, its product name, design, final features, price, or launch date. The reports describe a changing roadmap, so the rumored date should not be presented as certain.

When will AirPods 5 be released?
AirPods 5 is no longer an unreleased rumor: Apple announced it on September 9, 2026, and said store availability would begin September 18. Apple announced two configurations, priced in the U.S. at $129 for AirPods 5 and $149 for AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case.
Apple’s announcement said AirPods 5 brings Active Noise Cancellation to its most affordable AirPods. Those confirmed products and prices should be kept separate from the unconfirmed camera-equipped AirPods reports. Check current retailer listings and local availability before buying, since the announced U.S. prices do not establish current prices in every market.

What might the cameras do?
MacRumors reported that the cameras would supply information to Siri’s Visual Intelligence features, rather than serve as ordinary photo or video cameras. That could let the earbuds provide context about the wearer’s surroundings, but Apple has not confirmed the feature or how it would work. Treat all camera capabilities as reported possibilities, not final specifications.
Should you buy AirPods now or wait?
AirPods 5 is a confirmed option for people who want new earbuds before the reported window for the camera model. The camera-equipped product remains a rumor with no confirmed specifications, price, or release date. Your choice therefore depends on whether you want a product Apple has announced or are willing to wait for an uncertain future model.

- Wait for the camera model only if its reported environmental-context features are specifically what you want and you accept that its timing and specifications may change.
What would count as confirmation?
For a future model to be confirmed, look for an Apple announcement with a product name and official product details. Until Apple announces the camera-equipped AirPods, Bloomberg’s late-2027 target and the reported camera features remain unconfirmed. A reported target is not the same as a stated order or availability date.
