For an AMOLED fēnix 8, the most consequential display choice is Always On: keep it for a visible, glanceable watch face, or turn it off if battery endurance matters more. A shorter timeout can limit how long the screen remains at its brighter state after interaction. Sleep Mode and Battery Saver offer broader changes, but each affects other behavior too. First check which fēnix 8 display edition you own; these Always On instructions are specific to AMOLED guidance.
Which fēnix 8 display edition do you have?
The fēnix 8 family includes AMOLED and Solar editions. Garmin’s Always On instructions cited here apply to AMOLED behavior, so do not assume the same option or screen behavior is available on every variant. Check your exact model and its available settings in Garmin’s fēnix 8 support resources.

Should you turn off Always On Display?
On an AMOLED model, Always On keeps the watch face visible while dimming the brightness and background. That makes it easier to check the time without raising your wrist, but Garmin warns that Always On “will shorten battery life between charging cycles” and reduce display fidelity, so the image will not be as sharp. Keep it enabled if glanceability is worth those trade-offs; disable it for general use if extending time between charges is the priority. Garmin’s AMOLED Always On guidance describes the behavior.
How should you set the display timeout?
Garmin’s AMOLED guidance describes timeout choices of 4, 8, and 15 seconds. Choose a shorter interval if you want the brighter, interactive screen to dim sooner after use; choose a longer one if you value having more time to read it. The timeout is not a universal instant-off timer: behavior depends on what the watch is showing and whether it is being worn. With Always On enabled, on-wrist content dims after the selected interval, while off-wrist behavior can then allow the display to go blank.

When should you use Sleep Mode or Battery Saver?
Sleep Mode
Sleep Mode disables Always On and gesture settings during the configured sleep window. It suits a routine where a bright display or wrist-raise activation is unwanted overnight. Set the sleep window to match your schedule and check the behavior available on your particular watch.
Battery Saver
Battery Saver disables high-drain features, so it can make sense when conserving charge matters more than keeping every feature active. Garmin places it under Watch Settings > Power Manager in the fēnix 8 manual. Review the options on your device before enabling it, since the feature trade-offs may not fit every use pattern. See Garmin’s Power Manager manual page.

Can a software update fix battery problems?
Garmin’s fēnix 8 AMOLED support page lists software version 22.41 as of July 2026. Its release history notes that version 22.35, listed in May 2026, fixed battery estimates when switching activity power modes. That update addresses an estimation issue; it does not establish that updating will resolve an individual battery drain problem. Check Garmin’s current fēnix 8 AMOLED software information for the latest details applicable to your watch.

How much battery will these changes save?
Garmin’s cited guidance does not provide a complete current runtime comparison by fēnix 8 case size, display type, and usage mode, or a measured number of hours saved by changing Always On or timeout. Avoid treating any single hour estimate as guaranteed. For runtime comparisons, use Garmin’s current specifications for your exact model and edition.
