Which Garmin Watch Features Need a Subscription or Compatible Phone?

Most Garmin tracking does not require Connect+. Phone pairing, Wi-Fi, music providers, ECG availability and inReach plans each have different requirements.

Most Garmin watch tracking and existing Garmin Connect features do not require Garmin Connect+. A compatible phone is mainly needed for setup, syncing, notifications and some connected features—not for every function of the watch. Separate requirements apply to music services, ECG on supported models and regions, and built-in inReach communication on select watches.

Which Garmin smartwatch features require a subscription or compatible phone?

The answer depends on the feature and the exact watch. Standard tracking and existing Garmin Connect features are generally available without a paid Garmin plan. Phone-dependent functions need a compatible phone and Garmin Connect, while some services have their own prerequisites: a third-party music subscription, regional ECG support, or an active inReach subscription.

Feature Phone or connection needed Subscription requirement
Standard tracking and existing Garmin Connect features A compatible phone and Garmin Connect are needed for setup and syncing; individual watch functions vary. Garmin said existing Connect features and data would remain free when it announced Connect+.
Smart notifications and Bluetooth-connected functions Paired compatible phone with Bluetooth connection. No general Connect+ requirement is established in Garmin’s documentation.
Music and podcasts Phone for initial setup; Wi-Fi to download provider content. Synced content can play offline on a compatible watch. A separate provider subscription may be required, depending on the service and content.
ECG app Compatible watch set up with Garmin Connect; model, software and region must be supported. The cited Garmin ECG information does not specify a paid Garmin subscription.
Built-in inReach communication Initial Garmin Connect and Garmin Messenger setup; service availability and coverage vary. Active inReach subscription assigned to a compatible watch.

Do Garmin watches require Garmin Connect+?

No, not for standard tracking or the existing Garmin Connect feature set described in Garmin’s March 27, 2025 announcement. Garmin said: “All existing features and data in Garmin Connect will remain free.” Connect+ is an optional premium plan for additional features and personalized insights; what is offered may vary by market and can change. Check Garmin’s current plan details for your country rather than relying on a launch price.

That distinction matters: an optional Connect+ feature is not the same as basic watch tracking, and neither should be confused with a separate third-party subscription or an inReach service plan.

When do you need a compatible phone?

Setup and syncing

Garmin Connect is used to set up and sync many watches. Garmin says its app works with most Apple and Android devices that meet the minimum operating-system requirements. The compatibility page consulted for this article lists iOS 18 or later and Android 9 or later; Android devices must support Google Play natively, and Android Go is not supported. Some specific phones have not passed Garmin’s internal tests. Huawei phones may require troubleshooting, which is not a guarantee that every Huawei model will fail.

Those requirements can change. Check Garmin’s Garmin Connect compatibility information for the current OS minimums and your phone model. The page is from Garmin’s Philippines support site, so confirm that the guidance applies in your market.

Notifications and Bluetooth features

Smart notifications and functions that sync through Garmin Connect depend on pairing and a Bluetooth connection to a compatible phone. If Bluetooth is off or the phone is out of connection range, those connected features may stop working; that does not mean all watch functions stop. Garmin’s connectivity guide also identifies Wi-Fi-dependent tasks, including syncing some third-party audio, activity uploads and software updates.

Using the watch away from your phone

Whether you can leave your phone behind depends on the feature. Many watch functions can operate independently, and compatible watches can play already-synced music offline. Phone notifications, app syncing and setup-related tasks are different: they rely on the phone or a network connection as applicable.

Do music and podcasts need a phone or paid plan?

On a compatible Garmin watch, music can play without a phone or Wi-Fi once it has been synced. Getting provider content onto the watch is a separate step: Garmin documents Connect IQ provider apps and manually loaded files, and downloads of provider content need Wi-Fi. Some music providers require their own subscription, and Garmin says account status may need to be checked periodically over Wi-Fi.

Support depends on the watch model and current provider app availability. Do not assume a particular music service works on every Garmin watch. Check Garmin’s music information and the supported-provider details for your exact model. The linked Garmin page is for Ireland, so regional availability or terms may differ elsewhere.

Does ECG require a subscription?

Garmin’s cited ECG information does not establish a paid Garmin subscription requirement. It does restrict the ECG app to compatible watch families and minimum software versions, and regional availability is limited. The watch also needs to be set up with Garmin Connect. Garmin’s supported-device and regional list may change as products and regulatory approvals change, so check its ECG availability information for the current details. That source is for Hong Kong; it does not establish availability in every country.

Which Garmin watches need an inReach subscription?

Select watches with built-in inReach can use LTE and satellite communication features, but Garmin requires an active inReach subscription assigned to the compatible watch. Depending on connection type, Garmin lists features such as messaging, voice messaging and calling, LiveTrack, check-ins, SOS and weather. These are not general features of every Garmin watch.
