Then review the settings you rely on most: display and watch-face behavior, power saving, sleep mode, activity GPS, calendar preferences, notifications, connectivity, and essential sensors. Garmin’s update histories show model-specific fixes in several of these areas, but they do not establish that every update changes or resets settings.
Start with the release notes for your exact watch
Garmin publishes software histories by device. Find your watch’s page and match the release notes to the installed version before deciding what to inspect. A fix listed for one model is not evidence that another model has the same issue.

For example, Garmin’s Forerunner 255 software history lists version 29.05, dated August 2026, with a fix involving heart-rate and power fields configured through Garmin Connect Mobile. Its version 28.05 entry, dated June 2026, includes a fix for display settings not applying when changed in Garmin Connect Mobile. Garmin’s fēnix 7 software history lists version 26.09, dated April 2026, with fixes involving custom GPS configuration not saving and the watch face sometimes switching to battery-saver mode. Earlier fēnix 7 notes mention sleep mode re-enabling after sleep tracking and incorrect weekly totals after changing the first day of the week. These are reasons to check related settings on those models when relevant, not universal post-update effects.
Update methods also depend on the device. Garmin describes Garmin Connect, Garmin Express, and Wi-Fi as update routes in its Forerunner 955 software information. Connect-delivered updates may take up to a week to download before the watch prompts you to install; that is a general possibility, not a guaranteed delay. For the Approach S50, Garmin’s page lists version 9.15, dated August 2026, and covers Connect, Express, Garmin Golf, and Wi-Fi routes or topics. Check your own model’s page for its current version and instructions.

Which settings are worth checking?
Use the release notes to prioritize. If they mention a relevant setting or feature, inspect it first. Then check the items that matter to your daily use; this is a review checklist, not a claim that the update reset them.
- Display and watch face: Confirm the screen behaves as expected and your selected face and display preferences remain in effect.
- Battery and power saving: Check whether battery-saver or other power settings are enabled as you expect, and whether the watch face changes unexpectedly.
- Sleep mode and schedule: Verify the mode and schedule you use, especially if the release notes mention sleep tracking or sleep mode.
- GPS by activity profile: Open the profiles you use and check their GPS configuration. A setting may be specific to one activity rather than a watch-wide preference.
- Calendar preferences: If you changed the first day of the week, confirm the preference and check that weekly totals look right.
- Connectivity and notifications: Check the phone connection and the notifications you rely on. If the notes mention connection issues, compare the watch’s status with Garmin Connect.
- Sensors and accessories: If a sensor or accessory is important to your routine, confirm it is detected and behaving as expected, particularly when the release notes refer to sensors or connectivity.
How to investigate a setting that looks different
- Confirm the model and installed software version. Use the watch’s software information and compare the version with the release history for that exact model.
- Match the symptom to the notes. Look for a release-note item that concerns the setting or feature. Do not assume a listed fix applies to another model.
- Compare watch and app settings where available. Check the setting on the watch and in Garmin Connect, then see whether the discrepancy affects one activity profile or the whole device.
- Change only what needs correcting. If the setting differs from your preference, restore it and check whether the expected behavior returns. Consult Garmin support guidance if it does not.
Garmin’s instructions for using Garmin Express to update watch software say to connect the watch to a computer with its USB charging cable, select the watch, install available updates, and follow the prompt on the watch. Garmin states: “After the watch has installed the update, it will be ready to use.” Confirm cable compatibility with your model if you need one.

Should you reset the watch after updating?
Do not treat a factory reset as a routine post-update step. The Garmin support instructions and update histories cited here do not say a normal software update requires one. A reset may be considered as part of troubleshooting a persistent problem, but the reviewed guidance does not establish when it is appropriate for every model; check Garmin’s support guidance for your watch before taking that step.
