Start with the settings that shape everyday comfort and reliability: display and wake behavior, notification controls, and battery management. Then customize the watch face and tiles so useful information is easy to reach. Review emergency options separately; Google’s published emergency-feature table currently lists models only through Pixel Watch 4, so it does not establish which specific safety features are available on Pixel Watch 5.
1. Make the display comfortable before changing anything else
On the watch, open Settings > Display to adjust brightness and font size, and review Always-on Display and screen timeout. A brighter, continuously visible screen can be convenient; a shorter timeout and screen that wakes only when needed can help conserve battery. There is no universally best setting—choose based on how often you want to glance at the watch and how much runtime matters to you. Google’s display settings guide covers these controls.

For another battery-saving choice, open Settings > Gestures and consider turning off Tilt-to-wake. That reduces automatic screen wake-ups, but means you may need to tap the screen or use another wake gesture to check the time.

2. Decide which notifications should reach your wrist
Choose whether you want phone notifications mirrored to the watch and whether alerts should interrupt sleep or focused periods. For missing alerts, check both devices: notification permissions for the app on the phone, then the Pixel Watch app’s Mute notifications from phone and Hide silent notifications controls. On the watch, check whether Bedtime, Do Not Disturb, or Theater mode is suppressing alerts.

Also confirm the connection. The watch needs Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity, or an active LTE plan where applicable; Google’s troubleshooting guidance says the paired phone must be on for notifications. See Google’s notification troubleshooting steps.
3. Review battery settings and understand their trade-offs
Adaptive Charging
Open Settings > Battery and review Adaptive Charging. Google lists this feature for Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5, describing it as a way to minimize battery degradation when the watch remains fully charged for extended periods. Google’s battery guidance includes the feature and its model-specific runtime estimates.

Battery Saver
Use Battery Saver when extending runtime matters more than keeping every behavior unchanged. It turns off Always-on Display and limits background activity, so notifications may be delayed. Google says key health and fitness tracking and safety features are preserved, but Battery Saver does not leave every function unaffected.

Google also suggests turning off Always-on Display or Tilt-to-wake, shortening screen timeout, using Bedtime mode for sleep, improving location accuracy, and setting LTE Mobile mode to Automatic or Off when that suits your needs. Turning Mobile off can remove calling functionality when the phone is offline, so weigh that consequence against potential battery savings.

Google’s 2026 maximum-life estimates are up to 30 hours for the 41 mm Pixel Watch 5 with Always-on Display on and up to 48 hours in Battery Saver; for the 45 mm model, up to 40 hours and up to 72 hours, respectively. These are estimates from testing in California in 2026 on pre-production hardware and software, using default settings and a median Pixel user battery-usage profile—not guaranteed results. Actual battery life varies with features, usage, network, signal, and other factors.
4. Put useful information on the face and within reach
A complication displays information such as weather or step count directly on a watch face. Tiles are swipe-access shortcuts to frequently used information and functions. Set them up around what you check often, rather than adding information you rarely use. Google documents both options, as well as At a Glance, for Pixel Watch 4 and 5. At a Glance can show active timers or workout trackers and some live updates from phone apps or travel services.

Google’s AI-assisted watch-face creation requires an internet connection and a personal Google Account with Gemini enabled. Availability can also depend on software and account setup. Details are in Google’s watch-face and display guide.
5. Treat emergency features as a separate setup check
Google’s general emergency guide describes Emergency SOS configuration and notes that emergency calling depends on watch type and connection status. Wi-Fi models rely on a nearby phone connected by Bluetooth for emergency calls; LTE models need an active LTE connection. Some regions require active carrier service or Safety Signal.

However, the feature table on Google’s emergency-features page ends with Pixel Watch 4. It does not establish the Pixel Watch 5 feature matrix. Check current model-specific Google guidance and local availability before relying on a particular safety toggle or emergency-calling behavior.
Pixel Watch 5 charging estimates
Charging figures can help plan a routine, but they are estimates rather than promises. Google says a 15-minute charge provides up to 15 hours of battery life and that charging from 0% to 80% takes 20 minutes. Its separate troubleshooting guidance gives approximate charge times of about 15 minutes to 50% for either size; about 25 minutes (41 mm) or 35 minutes (45 mm) to 80%; and about 45 minutes (41 mm) or 60 minutes (45 mm) to full.
