1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can leave your phone behind with either watch, but what keeps working depends on whether the watch is offline, connected to Wi-Fi, or using cellular—and on its model and settings. Before you go, download anything you want to use offline, confirm the connection your plans require, and configure safety features while your phone is still available. Here’s what to check for calls, notifications, workouts, and help in an emergency.
Can I leave my phone at home with my Apple Watch?
Yes, if the features you need are available on your watch and do not require the phone. “Without your iPhone” can mean three different things: your watch may still be connected to the phone over Bluetooth, it may be connected to Wi-Fi or cellular, or it may be disconnected. Those states support different features; being phone-free does not mean every online service works. Apple notes that available features can vary by model and region. See Apple’s guide to using Apple Watch without an iPhone nearby.

- Disconnected: Apple lists timekeeping, workout and activity tracking, heart-rate checks, Apple Pay, and playback of media downloaded to the watch among the functions that can remain available.
- Wi-Fi or cellular connection: Some connected features, including calls and messages, may work without the nearby iPhone. Ordinary phone calls over Wi-Fi require Wi-Fi Calling; availability depends on the carrier and setup.
- Streaming and other network-dependent services: These need a usable network connection. Download music, podcasts, or audiobooks to the watch before you leave if you expect to be offline.
What should I change on Apple Watch before I go?
Confirm the connection you need
If you expect to make calls, send messages, check weather, or use other connected services, confirm that your watch can reach a usable Wi-Fi network or cellular service. A cellular-capable watch does not automatically have service: it needs an eligible plan from a supported carrier, and carrier and account availability vary. In the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, open My Watch → Cellular to review or set up service. Apple’s setup guidance is at Set up cellular on Apple Watch.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Download the music, podcasts, or audiobooks you want to hear before leaving. Streaming requires connectivity, while downloaded media can play when the watch is disconnected.
- If you plan an outdoor workout without your iPhone and want better GPS accuracy, follow Apple’s recommendation to calibrate the watch for outdoor workouts.
Decide whether Low Power Mode suits the trip
Low Power Mode can change how the watch connects and what it measures. Apple says it can turn off Wi-Fi and cellular data while the iPhone is away until an app needs a network; incoming calls may go to voicemail, and outgoing calls may take longer. It also disables background heart-rate and blood-oxygen measurements and heart-rate alerts. Exact behavior can depend on watchOS, so check the guidance for your software version before relying on a particular function.

Review Emergency SOS and Medical ID separately
Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts in advance, but do not assume Emergency SOS will work in every no-phone or no-signal situation. Apple says SOS needs a qualifying satellite, mobile, or Wi-Fi calling connection, with availability depending on model and region; location sharing can also vary. Check Apple’s Emergency SOS guidance for your watch and location.
Can I use my Garmin watch without my phone?
For functions that run on the watch, often yes; for phone notifications and many safety alerts, the answer depends on a connection to your phone or supported LTE service. A Garmin watch can track activities and use its own supported features without being a substitute for a connected smartphone. Check the manual for your specific model and activity profile: feature support and requirements differ.
Configure Assistance while your phone is available
In Garmin Connect, open Safety & Tracking → Safety Features and configure Assistance and its contacts. Garmin’s instructions require the contacts to accept the invitation. If labels differ in your app, follow the current manual for your watch. Garmin documents Assistance as requiring supported LTE service or, for a non-LTE setup, a Bluetooth connection to Garmin Connect on a compatible smartphone with active cellular data. GPS must be enabled, and contacts must be able to receive messages. Details are in Garmin’s Assistance setup guide.

Important: Garmin states, “Neither your device nor the Garmin Connect™ app contacts emergency services on your behalf.” Assistance is a supplemental alert feature, not emergency dispatch. A Garmin watch without LTE should not be treated as able to send an Assistance alert independently after its phone has been left behind.
Check Incident Detection separately
Incident Detection is distinct from Assistance and is available only on supported devices and activity profiles. Garmin documents requirements that include enabling the feature for the activity, GPS, a connected phone or supported LTE, configured contacts who accept the invitation, and wearing the watch on your wrist. Some Connected GPS devices need an active Bluetooth connection to the phone. Garmin also says Incident Detection does not work with third-party Connect IQ activity apps. Its Incident Detection and Fall Detection guide warns: “Neither your Garmin device nor the Garmin Connect app contacts emergency services on your behalf.”

Apple Watch
Notifications that depend on the iPhone may not arrive if the watch is disconnected from it and has no usable network connection. If you need notifications while away, verify the watch’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection and the relevant service before leaving; individual apps and services may have their own requirements.

Garmin
Garmin smart notifications are relayed from the paired smartphone through Garmin Connect. They are not independent phone-free notifications: the watch needs the required connection to the phone. Before you go, check that Bluetooth is enabled, Garmin Connect has notification permissions, the watch’s notification preferences allow the alerts you want, and Do Not Disturb or battery saver is not preventing them. Garmin’s notification troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Can my watch call for help if I leave my phone behind?
Do not count on either watch as a universal way to contact emergency services without a phone. Apple Emergency SOS depends on a qualifying connection and regional and model availability. Garmin Assistance and Incident Detection depend on supported features, prior setup, contacts, GPS, and an appropriate phone or LTE connection; Garmin explicitly says those features do not contact emergency services for you. Check the feature requirements for your exact watch and location, and have another way to get help when the situation warrants it.
What to check just before you leave
Apple Watch
- Choose the connection your plans require: nearby iPhone, usable Wi-Fi, or cellular service on a supported watch with an eligible plan.
- Download media you want to play offline.
- Calibrate for outdoor GPS workouts if needed, and consider how Low Power Mode affects connectivity and measurements.
- Set up Medical ID and emergency contacts, then review Emergency SOS requirements for your model and region.
Garmin
- Configure Assistance and contacts in Garmin Connect while the phone is available; make sure contacts accept the invitation.
- Confirm whether your alert path is supported LTE or a Bluetooth-connected compatible phone with active cellular data, and enable GPS where required.
- Enable Incident Detection for a supported activity profile if you intend to use it; check its phone/LTE, contact, and app limitations.
- Check Bluetooth, phone permissions, watch notification preferences, Do Not Disturb, and battery saver if you want notifications.
Garmin’s Find My Phone feature is for locating a misplaced phone, not for keeping notifications or safety alerts running independently. It relies on a prior phone connection and particular activity conditions, and Garmin describes it as helping locate the phone’s last known location. See Garmin’s Find My Phone guidance.
