James Bond did not wear one watch across the film series. The watches shift with the actor and era, and some films show more than one; Q Branch’s fictional gadgets further complicate identification. The early films mix Gruen and Rolex, the 1970s and 1980s bring digital watches and gadget props, and Omega’s Bond film era begins with GoldenEye (1995). Exact references are not equally certain in every film, so the guide below distinguishes official brand records from specialist identifications and tentative claims.

This covers the 25 EON films released through No Time to Die (2021). The chronology is useful, not a definitive prop inventory: the specialist watch list says its identifications are a work in progress, and several references are uncertain or scene-specific.

Bond’s watches, film by film

References below reflect the sources’ reported identifications, not a claim that a single watch appears in every scene. The specialist chronology uses screen-capture-based identifications and flags uncertainty; Omega’s official chronicle documents its Bond film history from GoldenEye onward.

Film Reported watch or watches What to know
Dr. No (1962) Gruen Precision dress watch; GQ identifies reference 510. The Gruen is an important part of early Bond’s watch history alongside the better-known Submariner association. GQ says the Gruen appears in multiple early films. GQ’s Bond watch survey discusses the identification.
From Russia with Love (1963) Rolex Submariner. This model-family identification comes from the specialist chronology; a more specific reference is not established here. James Bond Watches chronology.
Goldfinger (1964) Rolex Submariner 6538; a gold-colored watch possibly identified as the “Sylvia Trench Rolex.” The gold-watch identification is tentative in the specialist chronology, not a settled second model.
Thunderball (1965) Rolex Submariner and Q-modified Breitling Top Time, reference 2002 according to GQ. The Top Time is portrayed as a radiation detector. That capability is a fictional prop modification, not a standard feature of the retail watch.
You Only Live Twice (1967) Gold-case watch described as possibly the “Sylvia Trench Rolex.” The specialist identification is explicitly tentative.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) Rolex Submariner and Rolex chronograph reference 6238. The chronograph is sometimes called a pre-Daytona, but the identification applies to a particular watch appearance rather than necessarily every scene.
Diamonds Are Forever (1971) Rolex chronograph reference 6238 appears in the specialist chronology; GQ also notes the recurring Gruen dress watch across early films. Watch count and scene attribution vary by source.
Live and Let Die (1973) Hamilton Pulsar P2 and Rolex Submariner 5513. The Submariner has a fictional buzz-saw bezel in the film; this is not a retail feature.
The Man with the Golden Gun (1974) Rolex Submariner. The specialist chronology supports the model family; it does not establish a gadget claim to add here.
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) Seiko 0674 among the film’s watch appearances. The specialist list distinguishes prop uses, including the ticker-tape watch.
Moonraker (1979) Seiko M354-5019. The reference and bracelet details are specialist-source identifications.
For Your Eyes Only (1981) Seiko H357 and Seiko 7549-7009. The chronology lists different watches for different scenes or prop entries.
Octopussy (1983) Seiko Sports 100 G757. The source lists more than one prop use or feature.
A View to a Kill (1985) Several Seiko references, including a chronograph. One item is marked “under review” by the specialist chronology, so not every reference should be treated as settled.
The Living Daylights (1987) Heuer/TAG Heuer Professional references including 980.031 and 980.013. These are specialist chronology identifications.
Licence to Kill (1989) Rolex Submariner Date. The specialist chronology gives several possible references, with 16610 its most likely identification; it does not establish one definitive reference.
GoldenEye (1995) Omega Seamaster 2541.80. This film marks the beginning of Omega’s Bond-era chronology. Omega’s official Bond film chronicle includes the film.
Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) Omega Seamaster 2531.80. The reference is identified by the specialist chronology, and Omega’s chronicle has a film-specific entry.
The World Is Not Enough (1999) Omega Seamaster 2531.80. The specialist chronology lists multiple prop configurations.
Die Another Day (2002) Omega Seamaster 2531.80. The chronology records multiple gadget or prop variants.
Casino Royale (2006) Omega Seamaster 300 M Diver Chronometer, Planet Ocean 2900.50.91, and Seamaster 2220.80 across different appearances. Omega’s press kit confirms a Seamaster 300 M Diver Chronometer for the film, while the specialist chronology identifies additional watches. Don’t reduce the film to one reference. Omega’s 17 May 2006 press kit.
Quantum of Solace (2008) Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 2201.50 according to the specialist chronology. Omega’s official chronicle includes a film-specific entry.
Skyfall (2012) Omega Planet Ocean. The exact watch is disputed in coverage; GQ notes a unique titanium Planet Ocean made for action scenes. An ordinary steel retail reference should not automatically be treated as the screen-used prop. GQ’s discussion of the identification.
Spectre (2015) Omega Seamaster watches associated with Bond. Omega’s chronicle has a film-specific entry; the available details here do not establish all reference specifications.
No Time to Die (2021) Omega watch featured in the film. Omega’s archive has a film-specific story. Its displayed year is 2020, while the film’s theatrical release was in 2021; these dates refer to different things.

How Bond’s watch choices changed by era

Early films: Gruen and Rolex

The early screen wardrobe is mixed, not simply “Rolex.” GQ identifies a Gruen Precision dress watch in Dr. No and discusses the Submariner as a defining early Bond association. The film-by-film identifications also include the Rolex chronograph reference 6238 in later early-era appearances.

Gadgets and digital watches

Thunderball and Live and Let Die make the distinction between a real watch and a fictional prop especially important: a Breitling Top Time becomes a radiation detector, and a Rolex Submariner gets a buzz-saw bezel. In the Roger Moore films, the chronology lists a run of Seiko digital watches, including models identified for ticker-tape and other prop uses. These on-screen features do not mean the corresponding retail watches had the same capabilities.

Dalton’s transition

The specialist chronology identifies Heuer/TAG Heuer Professional watches in The Living Daylights, followed by a Rolex Submariner Date in Licence to Kill. The latter’s exact reference remains uncertain in that source.

Why exact references can be hard to pin down

  • More than one watch may appear. A film’s watch can change by scene, and a prop inventory may include functional-looking alternatives or gadgets.
  • A retail model and a screen prop are not always identical. The screen version may be modified for the story or made specially for an action scene, as reported for the titanium Planet Ocean in Skyfall.
  • Some identifications are specialist conclusions, not production-record confirmations. The specialist chronology labels certainty and describes itself as a work in progress; use its precise references with attribution where they are tentative.
  • A commemorative edition is not proof of the exact watch used on set. When comparing a modern Bond edition with film history, separate the edition’s branding from the older screen-used reference.

How to compare a Bond watch with its screen counterpart

When a modern watch is marketed or discussed as Bond-related, check the details that actually connect it to the film rather than assuming the name establishes a match:

Casio Men's MDV106-1AV 200M Black Dive Watch (MDV106-1A)
  • Stainless Steel case with Black Resin Band
  • Black Dial with date window at 3 O'clock
  • Luminous markers and hour hands; sweep second hand
  • Anti-reverse bezel
  • Water-resistant to 200 M (660 feet)
  • Screen-used reference versus later edition: determine whether the claim is about the watch shown in a film or a subsequent commemorative model.
  • Watch type and size: distinguish a dive watch, chronograph, or digital watch rather than treating every Bond watch as a Seamaster-style diver.
  • Materials and fit: compare case material and strap or bracelet; these can differ between a retail model and an action prop.
  • Certainty and attribution: check whether the reference is supported by an official brand record or is a specialist identification marked as likely or uncertain.

GQ describes Bond’s screen collection as 26 pieces across 25 films, a useful reminder that the franchise has no single “Bond watch.” That count is GQ’s characterization, not a definitive prop inventory.
