It announced its agreement to acquire Frederique Constant Holding SA on May 26, 2016, and reported that the acquisition was completed on July 11, 2016. The holding company brought Frédérique Constant, Alpina, and deMonaco—also styled Ateliers deMonaco in brand-history materials—into the deal.
What Citizen acquired and when
Citizen’s announcement identified Frederique Constant Holding SA, headquartered in Geneva, and its three named brands: Frédérique Constant, Alpina, and deMonaco. Citizen’s May 26, 2016 announcement records the agreement; its 2016 annual report records the completed business combination on July 11, 2016.
The annual report says Citizen acquired 100% of voting rights for CHF 125 million in cash. Those are the reported deal terms; the announcement described the agreement but did not provide the subsequent completion accounting.
Why Citizen made the deal
Citizen presented the acquisition as part of its Citizen Global Plan 2018 multi-brand strategy. Its stated aims were to broaden its portfolio from accessible timepieces into accessible-luxury watches, strengthen its position in higher-priced markets, and make use of distribution opportunities. The company also identified movement-technology collaboration and infrastructure sharing as possible future synergies; those were expectations at the time, not proof that every planned benefit was achieved.

CEO Toshio Tokura said the deal could expand Frédérique Constant sales through Citizen’s existing distribution channels, particularly in Japan and the United States. Founders Aletta and Peter Stas described the partnership as an opportunity to develop and market accessible-luxury watches, citing Citizen’s technology and the prospect of Swiss-Japanese collaboration. These statements explain the companies’ stated rationale, rather than establish later commercial results.
Where the brands sit in Citizen’s portfolio today
Citizen’s current watch-business portfolio page lists both Frédérique Constant and Alpina, and its corporate history records Frédérique Constant becoming a consolidated subsidiary in July 2016. The brands occupy places in a broader portfolio strategy; the cited material does not offer a detailed, like-for-like comparison of their roles or products.

Frédérique Constant’s official collection pages show continuing product lines including Classics and Manufacture. For example, readers looking for a current collection can start with the Classics collection or the Manufacture collection.
Ateliers deMonaco: what is established
Ateliers deMonaco needs a qualification. Citizen’s current portfolio page does not list it. Frédérique Constant’s Manufacture Experience page and its 2025 guarantee booklet refer to the history of Frédérique Constant, Alpina Watches, and Ateliers deMonaco. That confirms the brand’s place in the group’s historical materials, but the available official sources do not establish whether it is currently producing, marketing, or separately selling watches.

How large was Frédérique Constant before the acquisition?
The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported in June 2016 that Frédérique Constant made and sold 150,000 pieces annually. That figure is a contemporaneous description of the company’s scale before the acquisition, not a current production or sales figure. The Federation’s report also described an expectation that the founders would remain in their positions for at least five years; that was a forecast at the time, not evidence of their subsequent tenure.
