First, identify the watch and its module
Casio manuals are organized by model and module. Find the model name or module number on the watch or its documentation, then search Casio’s Watch Manuals page. Casio advises trying the module number if a search for the model name does not find the guide. Use that manual before changing settings or seeking parts: the cited button labels and illumination features apply only to the modules they cover.

Match the symptom to the conditions
Hard to read in darkness
Use the illumination control described in the manual for your module. Some watches also offer Auto Light, which illuminates the face when the watch is moved into a specified viewing position. Confirm that the feature is supported and enabled, and follow the manual’s instructions for its positioning and angle.

For module 5708, Casio’s Viewing the Face in the Dark guide says manual LED illumination uses button A. That is a module-specific instruction, not a universal Casio button mapping.

Hard to read in direct sunlight
A backlight is intended to help in low light; it is not a guaranteed fix for poor daylight contrast. Casio’s manual for modules 2307, 2335, 2355 and 2357 warns that “The illumination provided by the backlight may be hard to see when viewed under direct sunlight.” Move into shade or change the viewing angle to check whether the underlying display is legible without the light. The manual does not promise that activating the backlight will improve visibility in direct sun.

Auto Light turns on inconsistently
Auto Light has positioning limits, and the exact conditions depend on the module. In its module 5708 guide, Casio says the light turns on when the watch is positioned at an angle of 40 degrees or more. It also warns that Auto Light may not work properly when the watch is at a horizontal angle of 15 degrees or more from horizontal. Angle the face toward you as the guide describes and test again. The same guide notes that static electricity or magnetism can interfere with Auto Light.

The display darkened after the watch became hot
For modules 3260 and 3280, Casio warns: “Allowing the watch to become very hot can cause its liquid crystal display to black out.” The manual says the LCD’s appearance should return to normal when the watch reaches a lower temperature. This is a specific note for those modules, not an explanation established for every Casio display.

The backlight itself seems weaker over time
The manual for modules 2307, 2335, 2355 and 2357 says the EL light can lose illuminating power after very long use. It also cautions that frequent illumination shortens battery life. These are documented possibilities for those modules; they do not establish that a dim display on an unidentified watch has a failing backlight or battery.

If the cause is still unclear
Look up the exact model or module in Casio’s manual resource and check its illumination, display and troubleshooting guidance. If you cannot find a guide or it does not address the symptom, Casio’s manual page directs users to its Inquiry Support Desk. The cited manuals do not establish a universal contrast adjustment or battery-replacement procedure, so avoid buying a generic battery, display, polarizer or repair kit without identifying the watch and diagnosing the problem.
