A mechanical chronograph can gain or lose time because its rate changes with winding state, wear, temperature, position, shocks and magnetism. One day’s result is not enough to judge it: compare the watch with a reliable time reference at the same time each day for 7–10 days, then calculate its average daily gain or loss. Compare that average with the specification for your exact watch or movement—not a universal tolerance.

A chronograph measures elapsed intervals; a chronometer is a separate precision designation earned under a defined test. The terms are not interchangeable. Grand Seiko’s chronograph evaluation, for example, includes measurements with the chronograph stopped and operating, but its test is specific to that brand and is not a universal standard.

Why a mechanical chronograph can gain or lose time

The mainspring supplies energy as it unwinds, while the balance and escapement regulate the watch’s rate. A watch’s observed rate depends partly on the conditions under which it is worn and measured. The Seiko accuracy guidance identifies winding state, regular use and arm movement, temperature, gravity and position, shock, and magnetism as influences. It also cautions that a watch exposed to magnetism may remain magnetized after it is moved away from the source.

Published accuracy figures are tied to specified test conditions. The Japan Clock & Watch Association explains that catalogue accuracy is measured under specified winding, position and temperature conditions; results on the wrist can fall outside the published range. That does not by itself prove a fault. A sudden or persistent change, however, is a reason to consider an inspection.

Winding and everyday wear

The watch’s state of wind and how regularly it is worn affect the conditions behind a rate measurement. For a useful home comparison, keep your wearing and winding routine reasonably consistent rather than comparing a regularly worn week with a week in which the watch was mostly left unworn.

Position, temperature, shock and magnetism

Gravity affects a mechanical movement differently in different positions, so a watch may run at different rates on the wrist and while resting overnight. Temperature, a strong impact, or possible magnetic exposure can also change its behavior. You cannot identify the cause from gain or loss alone; a rate log can show a pattern, but it cannot confirm a mechanical fault or magnetization.

How to check accuracy at home

  1. Find the watch’s own specification. Look up the stated accuracy range for the exact model or caliber in its instructions or manufacturer information, if available. Do not assume that a watch has passed COSC or another certification test unless it carries that certification.
  2. Set a reliable reference and record the starting offset. Note whether the watch is already ahead of or behind the reference. Use the same reference method throughout; the manufacturers do not prescribe a particular phone, app or time service for this check.
  3. Track it at a consistent time each day for 7–10 days. Record the watch’s offset from the reference each day, along with whether it was worn and wound in its usual way. Note when the chronograph is used or left running. Seiko recommends judging the average over 7–10 days rather than one day.
  4. Calculate the average daily rate. Subtract the starting offset from the ending offset to find the net change, then divide by the elapsed days. For example, if the watch ends 35 seconds farther ahead than it started after seven days, its average gain is 5 seconds per day over that interval. Use elapsed days, not the number of checks, as the divisor.
  5. Compare the average with the exact watch’s specification. Individual days can vary; the multi-day average is the more useful comparison. Grand Seiko states an actual-use target of −1 to +8 seconds per day for its watches, but that is Grand Seiko’s figure, not a general tolerance for mechanical chronographs.

Grand Seiko’s instruction is to measure gain or loss “over a week to ten days, and not just for one day, and in normal conditions.” This reinforces why a stable routine and a multi-day average are more informative than a single check.

Can resting position explain a repeatable difference?

It can. If your log suggests that the watch gains or loses at a fairly consistent rate while worn, you can compare how it behaves in different resting positions overnight. Seiko suggests testing each position for 7–8 hours and noting the resulting gain or loss. Keep the duration and measurement routine comparable from position to position.

A resting position that offsets some of the rate accumulated during wear may be useful for your individual watch. It does not adjust or repair the movement, and the result is not transferable from one watch to another.

Does running the chronograph affect the result?

Record when the chronograph is running because it is relevant to diagnosing rate behavior. Grand Seiko’s brand-specific evaluation measures its chronographs in six positions with the chronograph stopped and in three positions while it is operating. Its overall factory test lasts 20 days at 8°C, 23°C and 38°C. This controlled protocol is not a consumer test duration or a universal certification scheme.

When you compare a home log with a manufacturer’s specification, check whether the stated conditions or test protocol account for chronograph operation. The exact watch’s instructions are the appropriate reference; one observation with the chronograph on or off cannot establish the result of a formal factory test.

What a timegrapher can—and cannot—tell you

A mechanical watch timegrapher listens to escapement signals and can report rate, amplitude and beat error. These measurements offer more diagnostic detail than a simple time log, and readings from multiple positions provide more context than a single short sample. Bergeon’s Accuracy Motion manual describes per-second updates and a data view summarizing measurements in common positions; Witschi’s technical material explains rate, amplitude and beat error.

These figures are clues for someone who can interpret them, not a stand-alone health score. The correct movement beat rate and lift-angle settings matter, and readings need to be interpreted against the manufacturer’s standards. A short reading in one position cannot establish a watch’s true weekly wrist performance or its full mechanical condition. General amplitude ranges should not be treated as universal specifications across calibers, lift angles, winding states or chronograph designs.

Most owners can start with the multi-day reference-time log; a timing machine is optional specialist equipment with a learning curve. If a reading leaves you unsure, a qualified watchmaker can assess it in context.

When to ask a watchmaker to inspect it

Arrange an inspection with the brand’s service center or a qualified watchmaker if the watch suddenly changes rate, has taken a strong impact, may have been exposed to magnetism, or remains outside its own stated tolerance after consistent tracking. A log of daily offsets, wearing and winding routine, resting position and chronograph use can give the watchmaker useful context. Do not assume that a particular cause is confirmed without an inspection.
