An automatic watch that stops overnight may simply not have stored enough power to keep running after you take it off. Wrist movement winds its mainspring, but the amount of movement during the day and the watch’s model-specific power reserve determine whether it will run through the night. Start with the maker’s winding instructions; if it still stops after adequate winding and ordinary wear, arrange an inspection rather than guessing at an internal fault.
Why an automatic watch can stop overnight
An automatic watch is powered by a mainspring. As you wear it, movement of your wrist operates the automatic winding system and adds energy to the spring. When the watch is off your wrist, it runs on that stored energy until the reserve is depleted. A quiet day, limited wrist movement, or a watch that was not fully wound can leave too little reserve to last until morning. Lorier describes overnight stopping as typically indicating insufficient winding during daily wear in its August 26, 2026 support article.

Automatic does not mean self-sustaining or unlimited. A watch’s power reserve depends on its movement and model. Patek Philippe gives 38–48 hours as general guidance for self-winding watches, noting exceptions for some models; Casio UK lists a 41-hour reserve for the movement covered by its support page. Neither figure applies to every automatic watch. Check the specification for your exact model.
What to check before troubleshooting
- Confirm the watch and movement. Check the model number, paperwork, or maker’s manual. Winding directions and reserve differ, so another brand’s turn count is not a universal rule.
- Note when it stops. Does it stop only after being removed overnight, or also while you wear it? That distinction helps determine whether insufficient reserve is plausible.
- Check its recent wear. A day with little wrist movement may add less energy than usual. Victorinox, for example, says its watches need 8–10 hours of daily wear to become fully wound; that is Victorinox guidance, not a general requirement for all automatics.
How to restart it safely
- Find the model-specific instructions. Use the maker’s manual or official support page to confirm how the crown should be positioned and turned for manual winding.
- Wind gently as directed. Manufacturer examples vary: Lorier suggests approximately 20–25 winds before bed, while Baume & Mercier advises about 20 clockwise turns for a watch that has been unworn or insufficiently active. These are examples for their guidance, not a substitute for your model’s instructions.
- Stop if you feel resistance. Jaeger-LeCoultre advises against winding beyond resistance. Do not force the crown or shake the watch aggressively.
- Wear it normally and observe. Note whether it keeps running while worn and how long it continues after removal. Compare that elapsed time with the reserve listed for your exact model.
When temperature or magnetism may be relevant
Environmental exposure can be worth mentioning to a watchmaker, but it does not establish the cause by itself. Jaeger-LeCoultre warns that magnetic fields may interfere with normal operation of mechanical, automatic, or quartz watches. Patek Philippe advises taking a watch exposed to magnetism to an official Service Center or Authorized Retailer for demagnetization.

Temperature guidance can be highly movement-specific. Grand Seiko documents stopping below 0°C for its 9R01 and 9RA5 movements under stated conditions when the remaining reserve is low. This is not evidence that every automatic watch will stop in cold weather. If yours stopped after exposure to a strong magnetic source, very low temperature, or a shock, share that history with the service provider.
When to contact the maker or a watch service provider
Arrange an inspection with the seller, manufacturer, or an authorized service provider if the watch repeatedly stops despite adequate winding and normal wear, stops while you are wearing it, or behaves abnormally after a shock or unusual exposure. The symptom alone cannot identify a failed component. Keep the model information and warranty details available, and follow the maker’s service route rather than opening the case or attempting an internal repair.
