The gray fumé dial and compact 44 mm lug-to-lug measurement helped make the ornate watch feel elegant rather than oversized to him.
Engraving was the starting point
Ahrens describes his watch purchases as projects sparked by a detail that holds his attention. For him, that detail was engraving. He traces the interest to an engraved Panerai Radiomir he encountered in 2015, followed by engraved watches from Magrette and a 2021 Maurice Lacroix Aikon Urban Tribe. The Aikon’s engraving was not quite the style he wanted.

Venezianico’s Nereide Acquaforte came closer: its acanthus-leaf engraving appealed to him, and he bought one before the Arsenale Bizantino was released. The Bizantino extended that interest with a different, Byzantine-inspired pattern that continues across the bracelet.
Why the Bizantino’s decoration appealed
For Ahrens, the bracelet was central to the design. Its engraved patterns are sized to individual links, so the decoration feels connected to the watch rather than confined to the case. He found the overall effect harmonious.

#1 Best Overall
- Case Dimensions: 40mm, Lug-to-Lug 44mm, Total Thickness 8.95mm
- Material: 316L Stainless Steel
- Dial: Blackened Brass, 99.4% Light Absorbent
- Crystal: Sapphire with Anti-Reflective Coating
- Movement: Miyota 9029, Automatic, 2-Hands, No Date
The finish also shaped his reaction. Matte engraved details sit against polished steel, without black varnish to darken the cuts. Ahrens says the result looked shinier than he expected, but he found the brightness acceptable and elegant. He liked how it played against the gray fumé dial’s sunray reflections.
What the specifications say
Venezianico’s official US listing identifies the watch as Arsenale Bizantino, reference 6221520C. It specifies a 40 mm case, 44 mm lug-to-lug span, 9.95 mm thickness, engraved 316L stainless steel, a brass enamel dial with smoked sunburst finish, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, and 5 ATM (50 m) water resistance. The listing names a Miyota 9039 automatic movement; its detailed section describes a three-hand, no-date display. See Venezianico’s US product listing.

- Case Material: 316L Stainless Steel
- Case Dimensions: 42mm, Lug to Lug 49mm
- Case Thickness: 11.70mm (Without Glass)
- Crystal: 1.90mm, Double Domed Sapphire
- Movement: Automatic Seiko NE88A
Fratello Watches’ February 2026 article gives additional movement details: automatic winding, manual winding, hacking seconds, 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), a 42-hour power reserve, and 24 jewels. Its specification table also lists BGW9 Super-LumiNova, a six-screw engraved caseback, and a 316L steel bracelet with a butterfly folding clasp. These are details reported by Fratello, beyond the core specifications on the official US page. Read Ahrens’s Fratello article.
How it wore for Ahrens
Ahrens wore the watch on a 19 cm wrist. He says the 40 mm case should not be smaller for him, while the 44 mm lug-to-lug span felt compact; he attributes that short span to the integrated-bracelet design. Those are his preferences and experience, not a fit guarantee for other wrists.

- Face: Aged, hand-antiqued brass
- Size: 40mm, 46.7mm lug to lug, 10mm thick
- Movement: Miyota 9039 Automatic
- Glass: Sapphire with anti-reflective coating
He praises the dial’s gradient and changing sunray reflections, the dauphine hands’ readability, and the elaborate ingot-shaped indexes. One readability drawback is the needle-thin seconds hand, which he says can disappear in some lighting.
Close inspection also revealed details he liked less. Engraving does not continue along the sides of the bracelet links, and he found the fastening screws and slightly different crown color less attractive. The bracelet initially pulled his wrist hair, though he says that stopped after several wears.

Price and purchase terms depend on source and location
Venezianico’s US product page displayed a $1,050 sale price when accessed in 2026. Fratello’s February 2026 article lists €900. These are prices shown in different source and geographic contexts, not a like-for-like checkout comparison or a universal current price.
The official US listing said returns were available within 14 days, with refunds subject to the brand’s terms and conditions. Venezianico’s homepage says orders include free shipping and advertises a two-year international warranty through its website and authorized retailers. Who might appreciate the same details
Ahrens’s reasons point to a particular kind of buyer: someone who wants decorative engraving to be a major part of the watch’s identity, including on the bracelet, and who enjoys a polished, bright overall look. The Bizantino’s time-only display, 40 mm diameter, 44 mm lug-to-lug span, and 9.95 mm thickness offer concrete points to consider when judging fit and function; the 5 ATM rating is another factor to weigh against your intended use.
If you are comparing watches, consider whether you want engraving on both case and bracelet or only the case, how prominent the decoration looks from a distance and up close, and whether a slender seconds hand suits the lighting where you typically read a watch. There is no controlled head-to-head comparison behind Ahrens’s account, so these are decision criteria, not comparative test results.
