Mondia Top Second: How the Flashing Dot Works and What to Check

The Mondia Top Second’s flashing dot is driven by a rotor beneath the dial. Learn how the mechanism works, why caliber descriptions differ, and which condition details to check before buying.

The Mondia Top Second is a vintage automatic watch whose colored dial dot appears to flash once per second. A rotor beneath the dial opening creates the effect, but surviving examples vary in movement identification, condition, and originality—details worth checking before buying.

What is the Mondia Top Second?

The Top Second is a vintage Mondia wristwatch known for a small aperture in the dial: as the watch ticks, a colored dot appears to flash in it. It is also described as a “flashing second,” “flashing dot,” or “hole watch.” The display is a mechanical effect, not a conventional central seconds hand.

In a 2019 account, Tomas Rosputinsky describes a brushed silver dial with a red dot, a black ring around the aperture, applied indices, and a date at 12. The date on the example he discusses can be advanced by pressing the crown inward. Other observed watches differ in dial color and in the number or arrangement of rings around the aperture, so those details should not be assumed for every Top Second. How does the flashing dot work?

A shaped rotor turns beneath the dial aperture. Dr. Roland Ranfft, quoted by Rosputinsky in Fratello, explains: “A “propeller” on the prolonged escape-wheel pivot turns once in two seconds; thus every second one of its blades appears in the aperture.“ As a rotor blade passes under the opening, the visible dot changes to orange; between passes, the dark background looks black.

Watchmaker Richard Askham’s examination describes a bow-tie-shaped rotor positioned between the date wheel and the underside of the dial. An additional wheel coupled to the escape wheel drives it. In the watch he examined, the rotor’s level mattered: if set incorrectly, it could rub, reduce the balance amplitude, and potentially stop the watch. That is a technical account of one examined movement, not proof that every surviving example has the same adjustment or condition. Richard Askham’s technical account of the Mondia Top Second

Why do sources give different movement names?

The movement identification is not consistent across the available descriptions. Fratello calls its example a modified AS 1913, and Dorotheum identifies reference 97-110-20 examples as having an AS 1913. Askham identifies the base caliber in his examined watch as a modified A. Schild 2063 and explains the rotor drive in that context. These sources do not establish whether the difference reflects a variant, naming convention, or an error; do not treat the names as verified equivalents.

For a specific watch, ask for clear movement photographs or have a watchmaker identify the caliber directly. A listing’s model name alone does not settle which movement is inside.

What varies from one example to another?

There is no definitive comparison catalog established by these records. When comparing watches, focus on what can be seen or documented rather than assuming a single standard configuration.

  • Dial: Compare color, finish, indices, date position, and the aperture’s ring layout.
  • Case: Note its shape, finish, visible wear, and any loss of plating.
  • Movement: Record the caliber identification and whether it has been examined.
  • Originality: Check whether the strap and buckle are original, replaced, or undocumented.
  • Mechanical condition: Look for evidence of operation, service, and any known faults.

What should you check before buying one?

Ask the seller to demonstrate the watch and disclose what is known about its history. A watchmaker familiar with vintage mechanical watches can assess details that photographs and a brief listing may not reveal. This is a practical checklist, not a standardized Mondia inspection protocol.

  1. Display and timekeeping: Confirm that the dot changes as the watch runs and ask whether the watch keeps time consistently. A moving dot by itself does not establish that the movement is healthy.
  2. Date: Check that the date changes and ask how it is set on that particular watch. The inward crown press described by Fratello applies to its discussed example, not necessarily every surviving watch.
  3. Service and movement: Request service records, if any, and have the movement identification verified. If service history is unknown, factor that uncertainty into the purchase.
  4. Case and seal: Inspect case wear and plating, and ask about the caseback gasket. A gasket’s condition matters independently of how well the watch runs.
  5. Dial and aperture: Look for damage, discoloration, or signs that the display may be obstructed. Ask a specialist to check for rotor contact if operation is erratic.
  6. Strap and buckle: Confirm whether they are original and whether they fit securely. The cited records do not establish a lug width, so measure the watch itself before ordering a replacement strap.

What do the auction records say about price and condition?

The available sales evidence is limited to individual examples, not a current market-wide valuation.

Record What it reports How to interpret it
Dorotheum, Vienna, May 21, 2026 Reference 97-110-20, gold-tone case, automatic AS 1913, original leather strap and pin buckle; light wear and a defective caseback gasket. The listing recommended service. Realized price: EUR 260, excluding buyer’s premium and VAT. One auction result for a watch with a stated gasket defect and service recommendation; not a representative range.
Dorotheum, October 5, 2023 Reference 97-110-20 with worn gold plating, a damaged non-original strap, low amplitude, and recommended service. Starting bid: EUR 150. The figure is a starting bid, not a confirmed sale price.
Rosputinsky’s personal purchase, reported in 2019 He reported paying EUR 300 for his example, which he described as hardly worn and fitted with an original strap and signed buckle. A collector’s individual purchase anecdote, not a market statistic.

These examples illustrate why condition and what is included matter alongside the model name. They are too few and too different to establish a current fair price for another watch.

Can you identify every Top Second variant from a catalog?

The available descriptions document variation but do not establish a definitive catalog or comprehensive production history. They also do not establish a reliable population estimate or a verified comparison with a current reissue. Treat claims about a particular variant, production date, or modern counterpart cautiously unless a source documents that specific watch.
