None of those benefits is automatic: compare the exact watch, seller, condition, and protections with the new option before deciding.
What can a pre-owned watch offer?
A lower price—sometimes
In Deloitte’s 2023 Swiss Watch Industry Study, 48% of surveyed consumers cited “Cheaper than a new watch” as a reason they might buy pre-owned. That is a reported motivation, not proof that any particular listing is cheaper or fairly priced. A used example may cost less, but its asking price can be affected by the reference, condition, demand, service needs, and seller.
A discontinued reference or specific configuration
In the same study, 31% cited buying a discontinued model as a motivation. Pre-owned may be the only practical route to a reference no longer offered new, or to a particular size, dial, or configuration. But “used” does not mean rare, desirable, or valuable; identify the exact reference and assess the specific example.
Access without waiting
Twenty-four percent of surveyed consumers cited immediate availability. Deloitte also discussed buyers seeking certain highly desired watches who could pay well above retail to obtain them sooner in 2023. Availability and price can therefore pull in opposite directions: a watch available now is not necessarily a bargain.

A defined certification and service package
Some branded or retailer programs publish specific authentication, service, testing, and warranty terms. Those terms can make a particular pre-owned purchase more reassuring than an undocumented listing, but certification is not one universal standard. The seller and program determine what the label actually promises.
What the survey numbers do—and do not—show
Deloitte reported that 39% of surveyed consumers were somewhat or very likely to buy a pre-owned luxury wristwatch in the next 12 months in 2023, compared with 32% in 2022. Its chart also lists investment as a motivation for 24% of respondents. These are consumer survey findings across named markets in the study, not forecasts, market shares, or evidence that a particular watch will rise in value. The report notes that secondary-market prices had cooled by the time it was published.

What do certified pre-owned programs actually cover?
Rolex Certified Pre-Owned
Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches are second-hand Rolex watches at least two years old, sold through participating Official Rolex Retailers. Rolex describes the watches as authenticated through its workshops, serviced and tested, and sold with a new two-year international guarantee. It also notes that some of its oldest models may not meet current expectations for waterproofness or original precision. These protections apply to watches sold through the participating program, not every used Rolex on the market.
Rolex says only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch. Its published information and program details are available on the Rolex Certified Pre-Owned page, the certification process page, and the Rolex newsroom program description.

Bucherer says its team performs a multi-stage inspection, services the movement, authenticates components, and includes an international two-year Bucherer warranty with its certified pre-owned watches. These are Bucherer’s published terms; they should not be assumed to match Rolex’s program or any other seller’s certification.
How to compare a new watch with a used example
- Match the exact watch. Check the reference, size, dial, and configuration. Confirm whether it is still available new and whether the used listing is genuinely the version you want.
- Compare the all-in price. Put actual prices for the same reference and comparable condition side by side. Include taxes, shipping, any certification premium, and likely service costs. The cited sources do not establish a general discount percentage for used watches.
- Verify condition and originality. Ask about wear, modifications, replaced parts, and polishing, and request documentation of the watch’s configuration. Do not rely on “pre-owned,” “like new,” or photographs alone to establish condition.
- Find out who authenticated it. Ask who performed the check, what it covered, and whether the seller stands behind it. Treat a brand’s program as distinct from a dealer inspection or marketplace verification.
- Establish the service picture. Ask when it was last serviced and what work was done. Factor in likely near-term maintenance, and check whether warranty service must go through a particular network.
- Read the warranty and return terms. Identify who issues the warranty, its duration and exclusions, and what return or dispute rights apply. Terms vary by seller; do not infer them from the word “certified.”
- Weigh the ownership experience. If being the first owner and buying new matter to you, treat that as a personal priority. A pre-owned watch cannot provide that same first-owner experience.
Why not buy new instead?
If the exact watch is available new at a price you are comfortable with, buying new can be the better fit when first ownership is important to you. A pre-owned listing may involve condition questions, prior service, or a warranty and return policy that require careful review. The right choice depends on the specific new offer and used example—not on an assumption that either category is always the better value.

Is a used watch an investment?
Some survey respondents report investment as a motivation, but that does not show that watches reliably appreciate or that a specific purchase will preserve its value. Deloitte’s 2023 report describes a secondary market that had cooled. Choose a watch for the ownership experience you want and assess the purchase on its total cost and protections, rather than treating future resale as guaranteed.
Rolex attributes this statement to Hans Wilsdorf on its Certified Pre-Owned page: “We would never sell a single timepiece that is not technically faultless and that does not give full and complete satisfaction.” It is a Rolex-attributed statement, not evidence about watches sold outside Rolex’s program.
