The Breitling Colt Military ref. 80180 is a discontinued quartz tool watch whose appeal lies in its compact proportions and unusually purposeful design: a black PVD option, 13–24 military-hour numerals, and a rotating bezel with raised rider tabs. The exact-reference record is incomplete, so treat dimensions and variant stories as reported observations rather than definitive factory specifications.
What is the Breitling Colt Military 80180?
The 80180 is a vintage Colt Military reference generally described as a late-1980s Breitling. Breitling says the Colt line began in the 1980s for armed forces, with design cues such as luminous markers, military-hour indications, robust cases, and raised bezel riders. That is background on the Colt family, not confirmation that every feature or date applies identically to the 80180. The company now identifies the Colt line as discontinued and points to the Avenger as an updated alternative. Breitling’s Colt history
The reference is categorized as quartz in Chrono24’s reference summary. The precise caliber and battery type are not established by the available reference-specific evidence, so claims naming either should be treated cautiously. Chrono24’s 80180 reference page
What makes the 80180 distinctive?
Compact, but not precisely dimensioned
Two sources give slightly different case figures: Tomas Rosputinsky describes the black PVD example he reviewed as about 38 mm, while Chrono24’s secondary reference summary lists 39.0 mm. Neither is presented here as a definitive archived factory specification; “roughly 38–39 mm” is the sensible description. The discrepancy matters because a one-millimeter difference can affect how a vintage watch feels, and individual fit also depends on lug-to-lug length, thickness, and wrist shape. Military-hour dial and rider-tab bezel
Rosputinsky’s example has 13–24 numerals alongside the standard hour track, wide hands, and an integrated date. He describes a 60-minute rotating bezel with raised rider tabs. Together, the dial and bezel make the watch read as a practical instrument rather than a dress watch. These details are observations of a reviewed example, not a substitute for a factory specification sheet covering every 80180.
Black PVD and the patina question
The reviewed black-coated watch showed exposed steel where the PVD coating had worn, as well as cracked lume. Those are condition observations about that particular example—not established defects common to all 80180s. On a PVD watch, coating loss is a visible part of the condition assessment: inspect the edges, bezel riders, and high-contact areas, and decide whether honest wear suits you better than a cleaner but potentially refinished example.

What is known—and unknown—about 80180 variants?
There is no sufficiently documented set of production versions to support a confident variant chart. Rosputinsky notes differing minute-hand sector layouts, but describes the distinction as an assumption. Breitling historian and community educator Fred Mandelbaum is quoted as saying, “Nobody I know has ever documented them. And it will take years until Breitling will get to these,” in reference to the variants. Mandelbaum’s view that the earliest examples may date to 1988/89 is tentative, not a confirmed production date. Fratello’s discussion of the uncertainty
Accordingly, a different hand layout or dial detail is not, by itself, proof of a distinct official version or a particular year. When evaluating a watch, separate what can be seen in photographs from what a seller asserts and what documentation or qualified service confirms.

How to assess an 80180 before buying
- Dial and hands: Compare the military-hour numerals, minute-hand layout, date, and lume condition. Do not assume an apparent layout difference establishes a production variant.
- Bezel: Check that markings are legible and the rotating bezel operates as expected; ask for a clear video if buying remotely.
- PVD coating: Examine likely contact points for worn or chipped coating, and establish whether any refinishing is claimed.
- Reference and records: Request photographs of the caseback, reference information, and any purchase or service papers. A seller’s description is not authentication.
- Service and water resistance: Ask when it was last serviced and whether water resistance has been tested recently by a qualified provider. Age and appearance alone cannot establish water resistance.
Current marketplace listings can show that pre-owned examples are offered, but asking prices are volatile and do not establish a typical value, authenticity, or condition. Compare actual evidence and service needs rather than treating a listing price as a valuation. Chrono24 listings for the 80180

Breitling says a reference number identifies the model and may appear on purchase papers or the caseback. It offers a Certificate of Authenticity request through a Breitling service center or boutique; according to its FAQ, the watch is then sent to a Main Center for analysis. This is the manufacturer’s authentication route, not a market appraisal. Breitling’s service FAQ

Breitling also says gaskets dry naturally over time and recommends a water-resistance test every year and maintenance service every two years. These are current general recommendations, not proof that any particular vintage 80180 remains sealed. Do not rely on an old depth rating, seller assurances, or a successful test from years ago before exposing a watch to water. Breitling’s service and water-resistance guidance
