1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA chronograph that stops, will not start, or returns its hands away from zero may have a control-position issue, hands that need model-specific realignment, or a fault that requires service. First check whether the watch’s regular timekeeping continues and whether it is quartz or mechanical. Then follow the instructions for the exact watch or movement: chronograph reset procedures differ, and a sequence for another model can make matters worse.
Start by separating a chronograph problem from a timekeeping problem
A chronograph is the watch’s elapsed-time function; its seconds and subdial hands are distinct from the hands that show the time of day. Note what happens when you use the chronograph, and whether the ordinary timekeeping hands continue to move. This distinction helps describe the fault, but it does not identify a cause by itself.

- The chronograph will not start or stops during timing: Check whether the crown is fully pushed in and consult the watch’s manual for the correct operating positions. Crown position can affect chronograph operation on some models.
- The chronograph starts but a hand returns away from zero: The hand may need realignment. Some quartz-watch instructions describe correction procedures after a reset or battery replacement.
- The regular timekeeping has stopped too: The problem may not be limited to the chronograph. For a quartz watch, battery attention is one possibility; for a mechanical watch, the available instructions do not establish a specific cause from this symptom alone.
A recent battery replacement or strong impact is useful context to mention when checking the manual or arranging service. Neither circumstance proves the cause.
Why the chronograph may stop or fail to start
Crown position or adjustment mode
Controls behave differently across movements. Citizen’s H50 instructions say that pulling out the crown stops and resets the chronograph; its troubleshooting instructions also say the watch is stopped while the crown is at position 2 during adjustment. Check the crown position and the model’s instructions before concluding that the movement has failed. Citizen H50 chronograph operation instructions and H50 troubleshooting instructions.

Quartz battery condition
For a quartz watch, battery attention may be relevant, particularly if the regular timekeeping has stopped or the problem appeared after a battery change. A stopped chronograph alone does not establish that the battery is depleted. Check the exact model documentation for the specified battery and replacement guidance; do not apply a quartz-battery explanation to a mechanical watch.
Mechanical-watch faults need model-specific assessment
The available mechanical-watch instructions provide basic operating guidance rather than a diagnostic guide to a chronograph that stops or fails to start. STOWA, for example, describes winding an automatic watch and resetting a stopped chronograph with the lower pusher, but does not establish causes for these faults. If ordinary controls and the correct manual do not resolve a mechanical watch’s problem, have it assessed by a qualified watchmaker. STOWA instructions for use.

Why chronograph hands reset unevenly or miss zero
A hand that stops short of zero or returns to the wrong starting position may have lost alignment. DETOMASO says this can happen after a chronograph reset or battery replacement and directs owners to their particular watch’s manual. A strong shock is another documented possibility: Citizen says it can shift the H50 chronograph minute hand from zero, and a watch instruction manual also cautions that a strong knock may misalign chronograph hands. These are possible explanations, not a diagnosis of every watch with a misplaced hand.
Use the correction procedure only if it is specified for your exact watch or movement. A correction mode may adjust one hand at a time and may require a particular crown position. The procedures below illustrate why one model’s sequence should not be transferred to another.

Citizen H50: separate adjustments for minute and second hands
For normal H50 chronograph operation, Citizen specifies the upper-right button to start or stop measurement and the lower-right button to reset after measurement. Its troubleshooting instructions describe separate hand corrections: repeated presses of the lower-right button adjust the minute hand; the second-hand correction uses crown position 2 and the upper-right button. Returning the crown to position 0 finishes the procedure and the watch starts moving. Follow the linked H50 instructions for the complete sequence and conditions; these steps are for H50, not a universal reset method. H50 operation; H50 troubleshooting.
Citizen B620: a different correction sequence
Citizen’s B620 instructions use a different sequence: pull the crown out two steps, hold the upper-right button for two seconds, use that button to set the chronograph second hand to zero, push the crown back in, then press and release the lower-right button to complete the process. This applies to the B620 procedure only. Citizen B620 chronograph-hand correction instructions.

Other quartz watches have their own adjustment modes
Georg Jensen’s quartz-watch instructions also describe an adjustment mode for chronograph counters that do not return to zero, with its own crown and pusher sequence. The watch’s own manual—not a procedure found for a different model—is the authority for whether and how the hands can be corrected. Georg Jensen quartz-watch operating instructions.

What to do next
- Record the symptoms. Note whether regular timekeeping continues, which chronograph hand is affected, whether the chronograph starts and stops, and whether the problem followed a battery change or impact.
- Check the crown and controls. Confirm the crown is in the normal position for your watch and use the manual’s specified start, stop, and reset controls. Do not force the crown.
- Find the exact model or movement instructions. Use the watch’s documentation or the manufacturer’s support site. Confirm any crown position, button sequence, and adjustment mode before attempting a hand correction.
- Try a correction only when the manual provides one. Follow it exactly. Do not repeatedly press buttons or use another model’s sequence if the hands do not respond as expected.
- Arrange qualified service if the procedure is absent or fails. A cited instruction manual recommends an authorized service center when its correction cannot restore the hands. For a mechanical watch that remains faulty, seek a qualified watchmaker. Watchia-hosted instruction manual.
