Buildings, tree cover, canyons and reflected signals can shift recorded points; GPS positions can also wander while you are stopped, adding apparent distance. Improve the initial satellite fix, pause recording when stationary, and check the GPS and recording settings supported by your model.
What GPS track drift looks like
Drift is the difference between your actual location and the location recorded by the receiver. It may appear as a track that cuts corners, wanders off a path, or adds distance when you have not moved. Garmin says that under clear-sky conditions its watches and Edge devices typically record an individual position within about 3 meters (10 feet) of the actual location. That describes a point, not a guarantee that an entire activity track will stay within that radius. Garmin GPS accuracy and track recording.

Garmin also gives a broad figure of 15 meters (49 feet) for GPS receivers 95% of the time, and says normal conditions often yield 5–10 meters (16–33 feet). These figures are not model-specific track guarantees. Recreational basemap scale can also make a position look less precise on the map than the recorded location itself. Garmin GPS accuracy.
Why a Garmin track drifts
Obstructed or reflected satellite signals
Buildings, dense tree cover, mountains, canyons and indoor locations can block or weaken signals. Signals reflected off nearby surfaces can reach the receiver along a longer route, shifting the estimated position. Errors are therefore more likely on routes beside tall buildings or beneath heavy canopy than in an open area. Garmin support: GPS accuracy and track recording.

Recording while stopped
When you are stationary, the receiver continues estimating positions. Small variations between those estimates can create a wandering line and add distance. Garmin identifies GPS recording while stopped as a major contributor to inaccurate activity distance. Auto Pause, where available and appropriate, or manually pausing the activity can prevent those stationary points from accumulating.
Starting before GPS is ready
If you begin moving before the device has acquired a reliable satellite fix, the early part of the track may be less accurate. Garmin recommends acquiring GPS outdoors with a clear view of the sky, staying still while it locks, and allowing extra time for the position to settle. For track running, Garmin recommends waiting another 60–90 seconds after acquisition. Garmin support: GPS accuracy and track recording; Garmin support: GPS satellite data.

How to reduce drift
- Sync the device. Connect it to Garmin Connect or Garmin Express to refresh satellite position data before heading out.
- Get the fix in an open area. Move outdoors with as much unobstructed sky as possible. Keep the device still and wait for its GPS-ready indicator before starting.
- Give the fix time to settle. After GPS becomes ready, wait an additional 60–90 seconds for track running, as Garmin recommends.
- Pause when you stop. Enable Auto Pause if it suits the activity and your device, or pause manually and resume when you begin moving again.
- Check the activity’s GPS setting and software. Confirm GPS is enabled for the activity profile you are using, and install current device software.
- Consider a more detailed recording mode or satellite option. If your model offers Every Second Recording or multi-band, use the guidance below and consult its owner’s manual for the exact menu path.
Exact menu names and paths depend on the Garmin model and activity profile. Use the owner’s manual for your device rather than assuming a setting is available on every watch. Garmin support: GPS accuracy and track recording.

Which recording and satellite settings should you use?
| Setting | What it prioritizes | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Every Second Recording | More frequent track points and greater track detail; it can improve accuracy in many situations. | Uses more battery and memory than Smart Recording. Available only on supported devices. |
| Smart Recording | A balance between track detail and battery use. | Records fewer points than Every Second Recording, so the line may show less detail. |
| UltraTrac | Battery life. | It does not improve distance or speed accuracy, so it is not an accuracy fix. |
| Multi-band / dual-frequency | More consistent tracklogs where reflected signals are a problem, such as around buildings or tree cover. | Requires compatible hardware and cannot remove every environmental error. |
| Other satellite options | Some handhelds offer options such as Multi-GNSS or WAAS/EGNOS, depending on device and region. | Availability and behavior vary; check the device manual. |
Garmin’s handheld guidance gives a separate location-accuracy figure of about 3 meters (10 feet), 95% of the time, for the handhelds covered by that guidance. Do not apply that figure to every Garmin watch or device. Garmin support: GPS accuracy and track recording; Garmin GPS accuracy; Garmin support: GPS satellite data.

How to narrow down the cause
- Drift mainly under trees, near buildings, or in a canyon: signal obstruction or reflection is a likely factor. Start in an open area, and test multi-band if your device supports it.
- Extra distance appears during breaks: check whether the activity is still recording while you are stopped. Use Auto Pause or pause manually.
- The first part of the activity is erratic: sync before going out and wait for GPS readiness and the settling time before you move.
- The line looks offset only on the map: remember that basemap scale can limit how precisely a recreational map displays a position; the map appearance alone does not establish that the recorded GPS point is wrong.
When these fixes do not help
Check that GPS is enabled for the specific outdoor activity profile, update the device software, and verify that the chosen recording or satellite mode is supported by your model. If drift persists, compare where it occurs and whether it happens while moving or stopped; those patterns help distinguish reception problems from stationary recording. Consult the owner’s manual for model-specific settings, since Garmin’s recording and satellite options vary across devices.
