The GMT hand showing another time zone does not, by itself, confirm that the date is aligned. Before adjusting anything, identify the watch’s model or movement and follow its official instructions: crown positions and date-setting limits differ between GMT watches.
Why does my GMT watch show the wrong date?
On many watches, the date advances according to the local-time mechanism. If the local hour hand is 12 hours out, the watch may change the date at noon instead of midnight, leaving the displayed date apparently one day behind or ahead. Check whether the local time shown is meant to be morning or evening; do not infer that from the GMT hand alone.

For the GMT-Master II specifically, Rolex says that if the date does not change, the hour hand is probably set to the wrong time. This is a model-specific clue, not a universal diagnosis for every GMT watch. Rolex GMT-Master II user guide
How to set the date safely
1. Identify the exact model or caliber
Check the watch paperwork, case documentation, or the manufacturer’s support information for its model and, if available, caliber number. Find the official manual for that exact watch before moving the crown. GMT designs can assign different functions to the crown positions and hands, so a procedure for one movement may not apply to another.

2. Check the local time’s AM/PM cycle
Determine whether the local hour hand represents morning or evening. If your watch has a 24-hour hand, consult its manual for how to use it to distinguish AM from PM. On Seiko’s 4R34, the manual explains that an incorrect AM/PM setting can cause the date to change at noon. Rolex gives the wrong-time hour hand as a possible cause of a date that fails to change on the GMT-Master II. These are instructions for those named models, not proof that another watch has the same cause.
3. Follow the movement’s sequence—not a generic GMT procedure
Manufacturers use different setting arrangements. Tudor’s procedure sets reference time with the crown fully out, then sets local time with the crown one notch out, moving the local hour hand in one-hour steps. Citizen’s Cal. 9054 procedure first sets synchronized time and the 24-hour hand, then uses the first crown step to adjust local time and date in one-hour increments; Citizen warns against turning the crown backward while switching the date display. Seiko’s 4R34 instructions specify separate operations for the date, time, and 24-hour hand.

4. Observe the 4R34 date-setting restriction if your watch uses that caliber
Seiko warns not to set the date on the 4R34 between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., because doing so may cause problems such as the date failing to change the following day. This restriction is specific to the 4R34 instructions; do not treat that time window as a universal rule for all GMT watches.
For a 4R34 example, Seiko’s sequence is to set the date to the day before the desired date, then advance the hands through midnight to establish the correct AM/PM cycle and date. Follow the manual’s complete procedure rather than applying this sequence to a different caliber.

What to check after setting
- Confirm that the local hour and minute hands show the intended local time and that the AM/PM cycle is correct.
- Check that the date advances at the expected point in the day/night cycle for your watch.
- Verify that the GMT or 24-hour hand indicates the intended reference time, using the watch’s manual to interpret it.
If the date remains wrong after following the exact manual, stop rather than forcing the crown or guessing at a repair. The manufacturer’s model-specific guidance or a qualified watchmaker can help determine what to do next.
