I bought the Kurono Tokyo Anniversary Toki because its coral-vermillion dial added a color I did not already have in my collection. The appeal is specific: a vivid, light-responsive dial set against a compact, polished case and a deliberately simple time-only display. It is not the best choice if low-light legibility or substantial water resistance is a priority.
Why did I buy the Kurono Toki?
In his July 2021 owner’s review, Zach Blass says the dial was the deciding factor: he wanted a distinctive color for his collection, and the Toki’s vivid coral-vermillion shade supplied it. The rest of the watch keeps that color in focus rather than competing with it: a restrained time-only layout, a black minute track and a polished steel case. Blass’s account describes his own preference, not a universal verdict on the design.
Kurono introduced the Toki for its second anniversary in 2021. The brand says the dial concept draws on the Japanese crested ibis, an auspicious bird whose feathers suggest the color of a rising sun. Kurono developed the shade to stand apart from familiar Western salmon-colored dials. The official description characterizes its color as shifting with the light.
What does the Toki dial look like in different light?
The metallic radial-sunburst dial is not a flat, uniform coral. Kurono describes it as ranging from crimson to vermillion, with purple appearing in some lighting. Its account says white light can bring out purplish coral, while yellow light can move the appearance toward golden hues. Those descriptions explain why the dial may look quite different in photographs, indoors and outside; the exact impression depends on the light and viewing angle.

That changing color is the point of the watch, but it also means the dial’s visual impact is not the same as easy reading in every condition. Zach Kazan, writing for Worn & Wound in March 2022, found that the hands could be momentarily hard to distinguish from the hour markers at cardinal positions. He also reported weaker legibility in poor light, despite the helpful contrast of the black minute track. Those are his observations of his watch. Read his owner’s review.
How does the case wear?
Kurono lists a 37 mm case diameter and a 7 mm thickness that excludes the sapphire crystal. The brand specifies a high-polished 316L stainless-steel case. Blass found the watch comfortable under a cuff and noted that its polished surfaces reflect their surroundings strongly. Kazan describes a roughly 43.5 mm lug-to-lug span and about 11 mm thickness including the crystal, giving a fuller sense of the watch’s profile on the wrist.

The compact diameter is part of the Toki’s appeal if you want a dressier watch that can slide under a cuff. The mirror-like polish is less discreet: it catches light and surroundings, so the case has more visual presence than its size alone might suggest.

These are the specifications on Kurono’s official 2021 Anniversary Toki page. The 3 ATM rating is modest; treat the Toki as a watch for everyday, dry conditions rather than one to choose for swimming.

What strap fits the Kurono Toki?
The lugs are 20 mm wide, and the listed buckle width is 16 mm. A replacement strap should therefore be 20 mm at the lugs; check its length and buckle dimensions as well, especially if you want to reuse the original buckle. Blass preferred the watch on a brown Barenia strap rather than the supplied black one, an example of how a strap change can alter the dial’s overall character. Kazan also found the 20 mm width accommodating of different strap styles.
How did the owner’s watch keep time?
Blass reported that his individual Toki initially ran within -4/+6 seconds per day, then averaged about +2 to +3 seconds per day over nearly a month. Those figures describe his watch and his observation period; he explicitly did not promise the same result for other examples. They are not a Kurono accuracy guarantee or a general test result for the Miyota 90S5.

Is the original Toki available now?
Kurono’s official page currently labels the original 2021 Toki release sold out. That status describes the brand’s release page; it does not establish whether a reseller or private seller has an example, or what one might cost. The reviewed sources provide no verified current resale inventory or price.
