Independent watches can reach extraordinary auction prices when a particular example brings together rarity, a compelling history, technical distinction, condition, and competitive bidding. Recent results—from $13.9 million for an early F.P. Journe watch in June 2026 to $4.6 million for George Daniels’ Space Traveller I in 2019—show what exceptional lots have attracted, not what independent watches generally cost or what they will be worth in the future.
What makes an independent watch unusually desirable?
“Independent” describes a maker working outside the largest watchmaking groups, but independence alone does not create a high auction price. Bidders compete for a specific watch, and the maker’s reputation is only one part of its appeal. A rare configuration, documented history, unusual technical achievement, strong condition, and a meaningful connection to a person or event can make one example stand apart from others.

These factors are best understood as reasons collectors may value a lot, not as a formula that predicts its price. Auction-house accounts explain the appeal of individual sales, but the results cited here do not isolate how much each characteristic adds.

A one-off prototype, a low-numbered early watch, or an unusual combination of materials and dial can leave bidders with few comparable alternatives. Phillips described F.P. Journe’s Chronomètre à Résonance “Souscription, No. 007” as one of only 20 early Souscription pieces and one of only two known in its material and dial configuration. The house also said it was appearing publicly for the first time. Phillips’ June 2026 sale announcement presents these as features of that particular lot, not a general scarcity premium applicable to every watch by the maker.

Provenance and a story collectors can verify
Provenance is the documented ownership and history of an object. A watch associated with a notable owner, commission, or moment may carry a story that distinguishes it from an otherwise similar example. The F.P. Journe FFC prototype that belonged to filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola is one case: Phillips highlighted its place in Coppola’s collection when reporting its December 2025 sale. Sotheby’s likewise noted in its 2023 review of watches that storytelling and provenance continued to matter to collectors.
A story is most persuasive when supported by records, such as sale history, ownership documentation, or maker correspondence. The cited auction reports identify the significance of provenance but do not quantify its independent effect on the final price.
Technical achievement and handwork
Collectors may also prize a watch for a mechanism or design that reflects a maker’s particular approach. Phillips described the F.P. Journe Résonance as technically important and pointed to its dual escapements; it characterized craftsmanship as a key consideration in the June 2026 result. Those are the auction house’s interpretations of the watch’s appeal, rather than a measured explanation of how much the mechanism contributed to the price.

Condition, documentation, and historical importance
Condition and originality help determine whether a watch remains a faithful example of its design and history. Supporting documentation can make that history easier to establish. Historical importance can add another dimension when a watch marks a technical milestone or represents a notable chapter in a maker’s work. Their relevance varies by lot: a distinctive story does not erase concerns about condition, and rarity alone does not establish authenticity or desirability.
What recent auction results show—and what they do not
The reported results below illustrate the range of exceptional sales involving independent makers. They are auction-house figures for particular lots, dates, and venues, not a price guide for the makers’ watches as a whole.
| Watch | Reported result | Context |
|---|---|---|
| F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance “Souscription, No. 007” | $13.9 million | Phillips, New York, 14 June 2026; the house called it a record for a watch by an independent watchmaker at that time. Phillips |
| F.P. Journe FFC prototype from Francis Ford Coppola’s collection | $10.8 million | Phillips, New York, 6–7 December 2025; the house reported a record for F.P. Journe and for an independent watchmaker at that time. It said the unique prototype displays the time with a single human hand and drew eleven minutes of bidding. Phillips |
| F.P. Journe Tourbillon Souverain | CHF 7.3 million / US$8.4 million | Result recorded in Phillips’ 2024 watch-auction retrospective. Phillips |
| Derek Pratt pocket watch for Urban Jürgensen | Nearly CHF 3.7 million / more than US$4.22 million | Result recorded in Phillips’ 2024 retrospective. Phillips |
| Akrivia AK01 | More than CHF 1 million / US$1.23 million | Result recorded in Phillips’ 2024 retrospective. Phillips |
| Philippe Dufour Grande & Petite Sonnerie | US$3.7 million | Result recorded in Phillips’ 2024 retrospective. Phillips |
| George Daniels Space Traveller I | $4.6 million | Sotheby’s, 2019; the house described it then as a record for an independent watchmaker and an English watch, and said the result was more than 30 times its price when it last sold 31 years earlier. Sotheby’s |
| Daniels Millennium cosigned by Roger Smith | $2.5 million | Sale cited in Sotheby’s 2023 watch review. Sotheby’s |
Record claims are time-bound: a later sale can surpass them. Auction results also depend on the specific lot and the bidders present. A public sale establishes what competing bidders paid for that watch at that auction; it does not show that every watch from the maker would command a similar price, or that a future sale will repeat the result.

How to assess a headline result
When comparing two sales, look beyond the maker and headline number. Relevant details include the exact model and configuration, production rarity, documented ownership, condition and originality, technical or historical significance, auction date and venue, estimate, and the final reported result. Currency and sale conventions matter too; the figures above are reported in the currencies shown by the auction houses.

For the 2025 Coppola FFC, for example, the combination of a unique prototype, an identifiable former owner, an unusual time display, and prolonged bidding provides context for the $10.8 million result. It does not prove that any one of those elements caused a particular share of the price. Phillips’ 2026 release described its record result as driven by rarity, provenance, and craftsmanship, but that is the auction house’s account of the sale, not a controlled measurement of those factors.
Why these prices are not a forecast
Exceptional auction lots are selected cases, not a representative sample of independent watchmaking. A record sale can reflect a rare object and unusually strong competition at one moment. It should not be treated as a typical market price, a guarantee of resale value, or evidence that buying an independent watch is a reliable investment. For an individual watch, the lot’s documented identity, condition, provenance, and comparable sales are more useful than a maker’s most famous auction result.
