Why Luxury Watches Have Become a Visible Milestone for Some Comedians

Hans Kim’s Rolex Submariner captures a visible link between stand-up success and luxury watches—but the available reporting describes individual stories, not a comedian-wide custom.

Luxury watches have become a visible marker of success for some comedians, but the available coverage does not establish a profession-wide rite of passage. Time+Tide’s Zach Blass frames the trend through Hans Kim, whose rise from a “hat-pull” performer on Kill Tony to a touring comedian is associated with a Rolex Submariner. Blass says host Tony Hinchcliffe credits the show with helping Kim reach a level of success where he could afford one. That is a compelling story about status and career progress—not proof that comedians generally buy a Rolex when they make it.

How a Rolex Submariner became a success symbol in the story

In Time+Tide’s account, Kim’s Submariner stands out because it is linked to a recognizable career arc: he began as a “hat-pull” performer on Kill Tony, then became a touring comedian who appeared regularly with the Rolex. Hinchcliffe’s reported comment connects the show’s platform to Kim’s ability to afford the watch. Blass interprets that combination as a possible rite of passage in stand-up.

The distinction matters. The feature offers an observed example and an interpretation, not a documented industry custom. A luxury watch can function as a personal reward, a marker of earnings, or a visible status signal; the available reporting does not establish which meaning applies to every comedian who wears one. Time+Tide’s feature is the clearest source for the “rite of passage” framing.

What watches have comedians been reported wearing?

Time+Tide’s examples range well beyond Kim’s Rolex. The publication reports watches worn by several comedians, including:

  • Kevin Hart: Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet watches.

These are publication-reported observations, not an independently verified inventory of each person’s collection. The range of brands also makes the point broader than one model: the story is about interest in luxury watches and what they can signify, not a required purchase for comedians. Time+Tide’s reporting names the watches in this group.

Comedians’ watch interest is not new

Coverage of comedians and notable watches reaches back well before the recent stand-up success narrative. MR PORTER’s watch-spotting feature includes Jerry Seinfeld, Conan O’Brien, Steve Carell, Richard Pryor, Pete Davidson, Donald Glover, Peter Sellers, and Rowan Atkinson. Gear Patrol has also profiled Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, and Hart as collectors, noting Hart’s practice of marking career milestones or achievements with a watch or car and Seinfeld’s interest in Breitling.

Those examples show a longer-running overlap between comedy, celebrity, collecting, and conspicuous personal style. They do not demonstrate that luxury watches have only recently become important, or that wearing one is a standard career step. MR PORTER’s retrospective and Gear Patrol’s collector profiles offer broader context.

John Mulaney’s collection shows the personal side of the story

A 2025 GQ interview offers a more intimate example of watches as milestones rather than a shared professional ritual. John Mulaney says Olivia Munn gave him an Air-King to celebrate the birth of their son, engraved “Malcolm’s Dad.” He also recounts selling watches during a difficult period before later developing a collection that includes Rolex, Grand Seiko, Chopard, and Breitling.

Is a luxury watch really a rite of passage for comedians?

Not on the evidence available. The sources discussed here provide profiles, interviews, and visible-wrist observations, but no representative study measuring luxury-watch ownership among comedians. They do not establish what share of comedians own one, what a typical purchase costs, or whether ownership has grown over time. Without those figures, the sound conclusion is limited: luxury watches are a visible interest among some prominent comedians, and some accounts connect them to success or personal milestones.

“Rite of passage” is best understood as Blass’s cultural interpretation of examples such as Kim’s Submariner, not as a rule of the profession. The coverage supports a story about individual tastes and status signaling; it does not support the claim that comedians must buy a luxury watch to prove they have made it.

What to keep in mind when buying a watch

The comedian examples are not endorsements or buying recommendations. For anyone considering a pre-owned luxury watch, authenticity and provenance deserve particular attention. In a 2017 Sotheby’s interview, comedy writer Spike Feresten advised shoppers to have a watch inspected before purchase or buy from a seller that guarantees authenticity. That is his advice in that interview, not a current official standard, but the underlying caution is relevant when counterfeits are a concern.

“Do a pre-purchase inspection on your watch just as you do with a car. I don’t need to tell you about all the counterfeits in circulation, so make sure you thoroughly check it out or buy from a place that guarantees authenticity.”

Sotheby’s 2017 interview with Feresten contains the full advice. The sources here do not provide current prices or a like-for-like comparison of the named models, so the watches should be treated as examples of reported comedian interest rather than a practical shortlist.
