“Pervert glasses” is an insulting social-media nickname for Meta’s camera- and AI-equipped Ray-Ban smart glasses. It spread after a February 2026 investigation reported that outsourced workers in Nairobi had reviewed footage associated with the glasses, including clips that allegedly showed people undressing, using bathrooms, having sex, and exposing other sensitive information.
That does not establish that every Ray-Ban Meta recording is automatically uploaded to Kenya or watched by humans. Meta says unshared media generally remains on the glasses, while content shared with Meta AI may sometimes be reviewed by contractors to improve the product. The controversy is about the gap between those disclosures, users’ expectations, and the privacy of people captured in the background.

What are “pervert glasses”?
The phrase is not an official Meta or Ray-Ban product name. It is a derogatory meme that appeared on social media after reports about human contractors reviewing sensitive footage connected with Meta’s smart glasses.

The nickname recalls the earlier “Glasshole” backlash against Google Glass, but the 2026 controversy concerns a more specific question: how footage captured by wearable cameras can enter AI and human-review workflows.
What triggered the nickname?
On February 27, 2026, Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet published an investigation based on interviews with workers connected to Meta’s AI-data operation in Nairobi. The reporting said annotators had encountered footage captured by Ray-Ban Meta glasses that included highly intimate or embarrassing situations. Read the Svenska Dagbladet investigation.
Follow-up coverage on March 4–6 described the reported footage, a proposed U.S. class action, regulatory concerns, and the rapid spread of the “pervert glasses” label. By April 30, reporting said Meta had ended its contract with Sama, the Nairobi-based outsourcing company connected to the work. Kenya’s data-protection regulator was also reported to be investigating. Those developments do not, by themselves, establish legal liability or prove every allegation in the lawsuits.
What did contractors allegedly see?
Workers told investigators that footage entering the review process could include:
- People using the toilet.
- People undressing.
- Sexual activity.
- A wearer leaving the glasses recording in a bedroom while another person undressed.
- Private conversations, documents, financial information, and other sensitive material.
These are reported worker accounts, not a complete, independently auditable sample of all Ray-Ban Meta recordings. The examples should therefore be understood as allegations about material encountered in a particular workflow—not evidence that most users’ footage contains intimate scenes, or that contractors routinely browse every recording.
The concern is also broader than sexual content. A camera worn on the face can capture children, medical information, addresses, passwords, identification documents, workplace conversations, and people who never agreed to be recorded.
How could footage reach Meta or a contractor?
- The glasses capture media. A wearer can take photos or video, including through manual controls or voice commands.
- The wearer chooses what to do with it. Media may remain on the device, be shared with another person, or be sent to Meta through an AI or other product feature.
- Shared Meta AI content may enter review workflows. Meta says contractors may sometimes review content shared with Meta AI to improve the experience.
- Some of that work may be outsourced. The reported Nairobi operation is why the allegations raised questions about who could access the material and how clearly users were informed.
The crucial distinction is that the available reporting does not support the blanket claim that Meta sends every recording to Kenya. Meta’s stated position is that media generally stays on the user’s device unless the user chooses to share it with Meta or others. Its supplemental terms are available in Meta’s Supplemental Terms of Service.

What does Meta say?
Meta says Ray-Ban Meta glasses are designed to let people interact with AI hands-free. In response to the reports, Meta said that media remains on the device unless users choose to share it with Meta or other people. Meta also acknowledged that contractors may sometimes review content shared with Meta AI to improve the product.
Meta says it takes steps to filter content and protect privacy, including measures intended to prevent identifying information from being reviewed. The central tension is clear: Meta disputes the implication that all recordings are freely exposed to contractors, while acknowledging that some content sent to Meta AI can be subject to human review.
Is the recording light enough?
Ray-Ban Meta glasses use a recording-indicator light intended to signal when the camera is capturing a photo or video. That is useful notice, but it is not the same as meaningful consent. Reporting and worker accounts said users or bystanders may fail to notice or understand the indicator. Ars Technica reported on the indicator and the allegations.
The light does not tell a bystander:
- Whether the glasses are taking a still image, recording video, or responding to a voice command.
- Whether the media is stored locally or has been shared with Meta.
- Whether a human reviewer could later see it.
- What happens to the recording after it is deleted from the wearer’s phone or glasses.
A signal can help people make an informed choice only if they see it, understand it, and have a realistic opportunity to object. Attempts to disable, cover, or obscure the indicator are not legitimate privacy workarounds; they remove an important notice mechanism and can create additional ethical or legal problems.
Who is affected?
This is not only a story about contractors watching sexual footage. At least three groups face distinct privacy concerns:
- Wearers: Their images, voices, locations, conversations, and surroundings may enter cloud or AI workflows.
- Bystanders: They may be photographed or recorded without realizing that ordinary-looking eyewear contains cameras and microphones.
- Contract workers: Outsourced annotators may be exposed to disturbing, intimate, or otherwise sensitive material as part of a data-labeling process.
The outsourcing question matters because a company’s privacy policy is only part of the data path. Readers also reasonably want to know which vendors can access content, what filtering occurs before human review, how workers are trained, and how long material is retained.
Are Meta Ray-Bans illegal?
There is no single worldwide answer. The legality of a particular recording depends on the location, the people involved, the type of content, and what happens to it afterward.

- Recording someone without consent.
- Audio-recording restrictions, which vary between jurisdictions.
- Intrusion into a private space.
- Disclosing or publishing intimate footage.
- Data-protection duties involving visual, voice, location, or potentially biometric information.
- Consumer-protection or false-advertising claims if privacy representations were misleading.
Rules may be especially strict in bathrooms, changing rooms, medical settings, schools, workplaces, and other places where people have strong expectations of privacy. A recording can also be lawful yet socially invasive. Conversely, the presence of the indicator light does not automatically settle whether a specific recording complied with local law.

What do the lawsuits allege?
An initial proposed U.S. class-action complaint alleged that Meta’s privacy representations were misleading and that sensitive footage was routed to a Kenyan subcontractor. The complaint also argued that Meta’s privacy-oriented marketing did not adequately match the reported review process. Read the proposed class-action complaint.
Those are allegations, not findings. Meta has not been found liable in the reported cases, and a lawsuit does not prove that a privacy law was violated. The litigation may test whether Meta’s disclosures and marketing were sufficiently clear and whether the company was responsible for the handling of content in the reported outsourcing workflow.
As of August 18, 2026, the legal and regulatory issues described in the available reporting remained unresolved. TechCrunch summarized the lawsuit and Meta’s response.

Reporting in April said Meta ended its contract with Sama after the allegations became public. Kenya’s Office of the Data Protection Commissioner was also reported to be examining the privacy concerns. Meta’s decision to end a contract does not establish wrongdoing, prove retaliation, or resolve the wider questions about data disclosure and human review. Ars Technica reported on the contract termination.
Regulatory inquiries and proposed lawsuits can clarify what happened, but they are not judgments. The status of any particular proceeding may change after the date covered here.
Should you buy or use Meta Ray-Bans?
The practical decision is less about the nickname than about your tolerance for wearable recording and cloud-connected AI.
They may be a poor fit if you:
- Work around confidential information, patients, children, customers, or vulnerable people.
- Spend time in bathrooms, changing areas, medical settings, schools, or workplaces that prohibit recording devices.
- Assume “on-device” means that no content can ever reach Meta.
- Do not want microphones operating around private conversations.
- Would be tempted to disable or conceal the recording indicator.
Before using them, consider:
- Whether people around you can clearly recognize that the eyewear contains cameras and microphones.
- Whether you will use Meta AI or share captured media, since those actions can change the data path.
- What your workplace, venue, school, or local law permits.
- How you will handle deletion, account security, and clips containing other people.
- Whether a conventional pair of sunglasses is enough for your needs.
A conventional smartphone is more visibly a recording device and may be easier to inspect, although it can still record secretly and upload footage. Camera-free audio wearables may reduce visual-recording concerns but still raise questions about recording conversations. For readers who want ordinary eyewear without cameras, microphones, or cloud AI, conventional Ray-Ban sunglasses or prescription glasses are the clearest privacy-first alternative.
Bottom line
“Pervert glasses” is a crude nickname, not a technical description of every Ray-Ban Meta user or recording. But it grew out of a legitimate privacy controversy: workers reportedly encountered intimate footage in an outsourced AI-data workflow, while Meta says only content shared with Meta AI may sometimes be reviewed and that unshared media generally remains on the device.
The unresolved issue is not whether every pair of glasses is secretly streaming everything. It is whether wearable cameras provide clear enough notice, whether users and bystanders understand the consequences of sharing media with AI, and whether human-review practices match the privacy expectations created by ordinary-looking eyewear.
