But “all” is too broad. This is a display convention, not a timekeeping requirement, and brands use other settings—including Seiko’s 10:08:42.
Why do watch ads show 10:10?
The position is useful for presenting a watch face. The hands spread across the upper half of the dial without overlapping, making the display easier to inspect. Their placement can also keep branding near 12 o’clock unobstructed. There is no special mechanical or functional significance to setting a watch to 10:10 for a photograph. It is a choice about how to show the product. A particular layout may also affect whether the hands cover a date window or subdial, so the best display position can depend on the dial design.
Is every watch set to exactly 10:10?
No. Ten ten is a familiar convention, not a universal rule. Brands may choose a nearby time to suit their own dial layout or establish a consistent house style.

Seiko uses 10:08:42
Seiko’s museum says the company has used 10:08:42 since 1964; before that, it used 10:10:30. The museum explains that its setting keeps all three hands from overlapping, looks attractive and leaves the name below 12 visible. It also notes that other companies use different exact settings. Apple Watch imagery has used 10:09
Engadget reported in 2014 that Apple’s promotional imagery showed 10:09, a variation on the established advertising convention. That report describes imagery from that period; it does not establish the setting used in every Apple campaign, past or present. Engadget

How did 10:10 become a familiar display setting?
According to a historical account by The Watch Collectors’ Club, watch advertisements in the 1920s and 1930s often used 8:20, with a shift toward 10:10 in the middle of the twentieth century. The same account reports that Hamilton used 10:10 in advertising as early as 1926, that Rolex followed in the 1940s, and that Timex’s Marlin used it by 1953. These are milestones reported by that account, not proof of a single, definitive date when the whole industry adopted the convention. The Watch Collectors’ Club

Does 10:10 make a watch look more appealing?
A psychological experiment summarized by The Watch Collectors’ Club compared images showing 10:10, 11:30 and 8:20. In that summary, viewers gave 10:10 higher pleasure ratings than either alternative and more often described it as a smiling face; 8:20 was more likely to read as a frown. This offers one possible explanation for the visual appeal of the arrangement, not a universal rule about how people interpret watch hands. The Watch Collectors’ Club

The distinction between liking an image and buying a watch matters. The summary reports a statistically significant difference in purchase intention between 10:10 and 11:30, but the difference between 10:10 and 8:20 did not reach statistical significance. It does not establish that setting watches to 10:10 increases actual sales.

Stories link the setting to the deaths of Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy or Martin Luther King Jr., to the Hiroshima or Nagasaki bombings, or to a “V for victory” symbol. These are recurring folklore, not documented explanations for the advertising convention. A watch explainer that discusses the claims notes that no known manufacturer statement supports the victory explanation. WatchTime
