To open a watch clasp safely, first identify its release: it may be a safety flap, button, folding blade, sliding lock, buckle pin, or hook. Release that part before unfolding or separating the strap; to close, reverse the sequence and check that every catch is secured. The eight common consumer types below are a practical guide, not a formal universal classification—names overlap, and the exact mechanism can vary by watch model.
How to identify and handle a watch clasp safely
- Look for the actual release feature before applying pressure. A safety flap, side button, hinged blade, pin, or hook each works differently.
- If the clasp has a safety catch and a main release, open the safety catch first. Close in reverse order.
- Do not force a flap or cover that will not lift. Seiko warns against pressing its described clasp flap too hard; the exact procedure depends on the model.
- When the mechanism is unfamiliar, use the watch’s manual or model-specific manufacturer instructions rather than relying on the clasp name alone.
Eight types of watch clasps and how they work
1. Deployant or folding clasp
A deployant clasp is a hinged mechanism that opens while remaining attached to the strap. Release its retaining catch and unfold the blades. To close it, fold the blades back in the reverse order until the catch engages. “Deployant” and “folding” are often used for related designs, but the release details are not identical on every model.

2. Fold-over clasp
Often found on metal bracelets, this clasp uses a cover or hinged plate that folds over the clasp body. Lift the cover at its intended lip or release point, then refold it to close. If there is a separate safety catch, release it before lifting the cover; do not pry at a closed flap.
3. Push-button deployant clasp
Press the release button or buttons—often one on each side—then unfold the clasp. Fold the arms shut to close and check that they have engaged. Some versions add a separate safety flap or secondary lock, which must be released and secured as designed.

4. Butterfly or double-deployant clasp

5. Tang or pin buckle
This belt-like buckle has a pin that passes through a hole in the strap. To open it, lift the pin from the hole and pull the strap free. To fasten it, wrap the strap around the wrist, choose a comfortable hole, insert the pin, and thread the tail through the keeper.

6. Hook-and-loop strap
This is a strap closure rather than a hinged metal clasp. Peel the overlapping ends apart to open it. Wrap the strap to a comfortable fit, bring the hook-and-loop surfaces together, and press them down to fasten. A proprietary strap arrangement may have its own instructions.

How to open a Rolex Oysterlock clasp
Oysterlock is a particular Rolex safety-clasp design, not a universal deployant procedure. Rolex’s September 2021 brochure gives this sequence: lift the safety catch, then press the lever lip to release the spring-loaded mechanism. To fasten it, close the cover and safety catch. Rolex says the cover and catch close with two firm clicks in succession; that description applies to this design, not to all watch clasps.

Choosing a clasp or replacement
For a replacement clasp, lug width alone does not establish compatibility. Check the width at the strap’s clasp end and how the clasp attaches. Also confirm that it suits the strap material and thickness, and follow the watchmaker’s compatibility guidance. A clasp that fits one end of a strap may still be unsuitable for the watch or strap construction.
